Cleary expected to return against Coyotes on Jan. 2nd
Reilly replied to Miller Brew's topic in General
Funny, I actually forgot Cleary was on this team. -
Too many goalies? Having three young goalies with potential in the system is about average for most clubs. The Wings haven't had young goatending depth like this in a very long time. Maybe ever. When was the last time Detroit drafted a goalie that played in the NHL consistently? Chris Osgood. McCollum and Larsson are still pretty unproven. And while Howard has been good, he still has ways to go.

If this team keeps a declining Lidstrom over signing Kovalchuk, than all hope is lost. I have no problem bringing Lidstrom back next year, but not at the expensive of younger, better superstar players. That said, I think Kovalchuk will re-sign with Atlanta at some point.

FYI: The game is streaming on Yahoo. http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl

Say what you want about Holmstrom, but simply having him on the active roster makes teams spend time in practice preparing to face him, particularly the defense and goaltending. Now, I'm not saying he deserves to be on the top line anymore, but it'll be a long time for me to give up on him, especially for nothing in return.

Oduya scored? Just cancel this season.

Right, but you're under a legally binding contract. This is why Olympics are left to athletes not playing in professional leagues. Players like Ovechkin and Malkin that are threatening to leave to play in 2014 are full of themselves. If they wanted to play in the Olympics so bad, then they shouldn't had signed with NHL clubs. That's why they have the tournaments like the World Cup that take place during the offseason.

Erik Johnson is a monster.
-
I wouldn't bring him back for anything over 3 million.
-
Hopefully bottom 5. Taylor Hall would look nice in a Wings uni. Clearly the most important thing on this team's mind is the Olympics this year. You can forget about the Stanley Cup.
-
I'm sure Illitch is pleased with this news. This is the last year NHL players will go to the Olympics.

Here's an interesting question. Assuming Detroit is out of the playoff picture by March, would you trade Lidstrom given he's a free agent at the end of this season? Keep in mind, he could probably fetch two first round picks and some decent prospects. I would, even if it would probably mean he wouldn't be resiging this offseason.

It's listed on NHLPA.com, an official league website. Seems like a pretty good source to me.

First, none of the Wings' young players are any good. They're not superstars and they probably won't be superstars. I high hopes for some players, like Tatar, Smith, and Helm, obviously. But honestly, none of them are blue chippers. So let's calm down with this talk of sending messages and let me know when all these young players start contributing. And besides, what did all these years of loyaltly do when it came to re-sign Hudler? He bolted. And it's not like Zetterberg or Datsyuk were easy contracts for Holland to get done, either. In a salary cap era, loyalty is meaningless. Players want money first and foremost.
-
Those sources are still pretty crappy. For all we know, they all could be sourcing the same website.
-
K, well I don't see it anywhere else. I mean, I know NHLSCAP looks like a legitimate website and all... Nope.
-
Where does it say he has a no movement clause? I don't recall seeing that anywhere. Trading a 39-year-old player at the end of his contract on a team that's probably missing the playoffs for the first time in almost two decades doesn't exactly devalue the oganization's player loyalty from my perspective. Besides, it's been proven that free agents won't take a massive paycut in today's salary cap to play here, so who cares?

Get ready for some make up calls.

I'm obviously talking about players who played the majority of their career in Detroit. Not players that stopped for a cup of coffee. Then what are you talking about? I watched Fedorov for most of his career in Detroit. He seemed to bring it every night. Is Osgood's number being retired then? If it were up to the fans, Fedorov's jersey would be retired. Maybe, if Fedorov was negotiating his own contracts or demanded a trade or something, I could see that reasoning. But he wasn't. A player's contributions on the ice should not be canceled out due to contract negotiations of millions of dollars off the ice done by his agent.
-
You don't think he'll want another Hall-of-Fame Red Wings player in Toronto and on that ceiling of Joe Louis Arena?
-
Why wouldn't they retire one of their best forwards ever? It's like asking if Pittsburgh will ever retire Jagr's number. It will happen. Just give it time.

You'd have to assume whatever Detroit offers another team could make a better one. I'd just bite the bullet this season, keep the draft picks, keep the young players and see what happens.
