It stems from a few things. First off, at least in football, Michigan usually beats MSU. So we Spartans fans just have to hope to see UM get beat by other teams, since most of the time MSU can't beat them. It's a moral victory of sorts. The other reason is the UM fanbase. I actually respect the University of Michigan itself. It's an excellent school. Too bad the vast majority of their fans A) never went there and B) couldn't get in unless they were pushing a broom. Now, it doesn't bother me so much that these people cheer for a school they could never get into. I understand that UM is a powerhouse when it comes to football, and it's fun to cheer for a winner and their cool helmets. FYI, MSU wore the winged helmets before UM did. What pisses me off is when UM's white trash fanbase acts superior to Spartans, despite the fact their only association to the university is hanging a UM flag outside their doublewide meth lab on game day. You want to cheer for the Weasels, fine. But don't act like you're superior to me when UM beats State. At least I went to the college I cheer for. That's only true for football. As far as I know, UM considers MSU their main rival for basketball, where UM is usually the underdog, and hockey, where the teams are usually even. MSU holds a 5-1-5 record against UM in the last few years in hockey actually.

Beating the Falcons and losing to the 49ers. Yup. Same old Lions.

I would sooner poke my eyes out with a rusty knife than cheer for Michigan. The only exception might be if Lloyd Carr had a fist fight with Osama Bin Ladin. I'd cheer for Carr then, but that's it.

2 assists for Abdelkader last night in MSU's 6-0 win over Ferris. He's currently got 3 goals and 5 assists in 8 games. That ties him for 3rd in points on the team.

I didn't want the Tigers to go get a DH. Mostly because I'd much rather see Maggs get DH'ed to save his knee.

Good for him I didn't see this anywhere in the news. I bet if Edwards knockd over a liquor store he'd get plenty of press Too bad stuff like this gets ignored.

Another great series. Hockey is clearly the best MSU/UM rivalry. Football and basketball are too one-sided. Hockey, the teams are always close.

I think Michigan will make the tourny this year. State will make the tourny simply because they're State, barring any sort of MSU football like season. I actually think this State team will get in as anywhere from a 7 to 11 seed, and proceed to win a few games. Some early reports I've read said Izzo really likes this team, and they're going to be stressing Izzo's favorite things, defense and rebounding. They won't have the talent of some of the past MSU teams, but they should have the heart.

He also had an assist last night. Good job by MSU

I agree, it would take more than Robertson and Monroe to get Tex. I'd imagine they'd want Bondo. Texas has a good lineup, but they really need pitching. I could definitely see them wanting a couple prospects if they took Nate.

The Spartans beat the Weasels! MSU now has a 4-0-5 unbeaten streaking going against UM. UM was up 3-1 at one point, until MSU scored 5 straight goals. Final score, 7-4, good guys win

From SI I agree with the unnamed executive. No thanks.

Pudge and Rogers each won the Gold Glove at their position. This years win gives Kenny 5 Gold Gloves and Pudge 12!

My personal opinion is that the Tigers really don't have to go stock up on big hitters this off season. Yes, a big, left handed bat would be very nice. Hell, a few more lefties period would be nice. But it was the lack of a big stick that cost the Tigers the World Series. Stick with the good pitching, that's what got you there in the first place. That being said, I wouldn't say no to Soriano. But he's going to command a huge salary, he's a righty, and he strikes out a lot. I honestly don't think he's going to be worth what he gets paid, at least in my mind.

Just like its spelled Ab, like the muscle. Del, like the computer company Ka, like in Katie bar the door hockey Der, like the sound knuckle dragging Avs fans make.

That's why I want Kelly. I did my undergrad at GVSU when he was there, and he turned them into the best D2 program in the country. He's turned CMU around. A little more coaching expierence at the D1 level probably couldn't hurt him, but I'd be very happy with him. Pat Shurmur is still my top choice, but I wouldn't say no to Brian Kelly. I think it was more Illinois and Indiana that did the cowboy in.

I hope to god we don't get Mooch. Although if Izzo wants his buddy here, I'm sure it's a done deal. Coker, Butch Davis, and English won't be coming here, IMO. I like Kelly, Willingham, or Pat Shurmur who is currently the QB coach for the Eagles. He's a MSU alum and coached under Saban. I just heard someone bring up Jim Harbaugh today. Even though he's a weasel, I wouldn't be too opposed to it.

Press conferance at MSU, 1:30 today. Bye bye John L

What would you guys think if the Tigers signed Gary Matthews Jr., from Texas? He's a free agent this year, and only earned 1.1 million last year. He had a good seaosn, so he'd get a raise on the open market, but he's not going to break the bank. He hit .313 with 19 homers, 79 RBIs last year, along with a .371 OBP and .495 SLG. From what I read and remember seeing of him, he's a good enough fielder that he could play center in Detroit. He's got a decent arm so he could probably play right and move Maggs to the DH slot. And to top it off, he's a switch hitter.

I agree about that outfield. I've heard around the net that Granderson moving to left with Maybin taking over in center. Either way, I love the idea of a Grandy/Maybin/Clevlen outfield. I'm not sold on Huff either. Like I said earlier, I'd like to see a package deal for Tex. I'd rather see the money used to give Bonderman a nice raise.
-
There's been a lot of chatter on the net that Tex is a guy the Tigers would go after. I've never read anything that the Tigers are even talking to the Rangers though. He's a switch hitter, and would provide good power for a first basemen. The Rangers need pitching, and the Tigers have a surplus of pitching. I'd like to see the Tigers offer a package deal with Maroth or Robertson. If the Rangers wanted Bonderman for Tex, straight up, I'd say no. I'll take good pitching over good hitting. One thing I'd like to see discussed at least, is the possibility of making Maggs the full time DH. Let's face it, how much longer is his knee going to hold up playing right field every day. Maybin is probably at least a year away from the bigs, more likely 2 years. If they could find a stopgap right fielder. Hell, give Clevelen a real shot at the position. I know that Maggs' salary is quite a bit for a DH, but considering the length of his contract, I think it would be best to keep him healthy as long as possible. EDIT: I see that BetterRed and I are on the same wavelength here

Here we are, the World Series. How many among us thought the Tigers were going to be here at the start of the season? Put your hands down, you're lying At the start of the season, I was hoping for the Tigers to go 85-77 and finish third place in the Central. If they did that, I would have called it a damn good year. So obviously this year has exceeded my wildest expectations and hopes. And it figures, the year I move to Texas is the year the Tigers fiinally get back in the world series. Doh! Here's the TV schedule All games on Fox SATURDAY: St. Louis at Detroit, 7:30 p.m. SUNDAY: St. Louis at Detroit, 7:30 p.m. TUESDAY: Detroit at St. Louis, 8 p.m. WEDNESDAY: Detroit at St. Louis, 8 p.m. THURSDAY: Detroit at St. Louis, 8 p.m.* OCT. 28: St. Louis at Detroit, 8 p.m.* OCT. 29: St. Louis at Detroit, 8 p.m.*

Don't the Wings have to have him signed next year, or they lose the rights to him?

That sucks! I went to a MSU/UM game at Yost during the 04-05 season, it was amazing. It was the game where Drew Miller scored the tying goal with 1.3 seconds left. I'm predicting MSU wins at home, and the game at Yost is a tie.

Michigan State won both their games this weekend, beating St. Lawrence 5-3, and Sacred Heart 7-5. I like the sweep, and I like how many goals the Spartans got. However, giving up 5 goals to Sacred Heart is not good. I really hope MSU isn't playing down to their competition, like they were a few years ago. Last year it finally looked like they broke that habit. One of the best rivialries in college hockey takes place this weekend, Michigan State and Michigan. Friday's game is at Munn at Saturday's is at Yost. Michigan will be missing Jack Johnson for Friday's game. The Spartans have an 8 game unbeaten streak going against the Weasels, dating back to 2004. Here's hoping they can continue. GO GREEN!
