Considering how bad it could have been - piping, vertical stripes, total logo and/ior color change - we should be thankful to the Hockey Gods that it is basically the same Wings sweater. The few changes are relatively minor and don't change the overall look of the sweater. The only thing that remains as a question mark is the lettering, although I doubt that is much concern because that is like a trademark thing and if they didn't change anything else, why change the lettering? BTW - the lettering is different in the preseason because of the number of sweaters they have to have made for players who are going to end up in Grand Rapids or get cut. It is faster and easier to do a generic font for all those sweaters rather than do the custom arched lettering for each one.

Looks like a size tag...my guess is that you can snip that off with a pair of manicure scissors.

What iriitates me more about the NHL is the league forcing teams to follow a formulaic web site...every team's web site has to look the same. The teams didn't have a choice in the matter. I hate that they all look the same now...I liked the individuality of the various team sites. The basic sweater changes are no big deal to me...it really is a simple switching of manufacturers. The NHL didn't tell the teams they had to change logos, colors and designs. Some teams took this as an opportunity to update or change their designs and/or logo. Others, like the Wings, didn't do that.

Not bad at al...the changes really are minimal. The sweater is basically the same (thank God). I agree about the color being a result of the image quality. I really doubt the Wings are changing their colour of red.

Those Vancouver unis are so horrible, they're classic!! I'd have to vote them as the absolute worst. I remember the old Astros, Pirates and Padres uniforms, but for some reason I don't remember the ChiSox wearing shorts. Maybe I was too young to really pay attention to what the players were wearing.

Besides "The Captain" and "Nineteen", both of which have been mentioned and are excellent, here are some comments on a few more... If you can find it, "Heart of a Champion" is a good start. It's more than 10 years old, though, and is out of print, so if you can find a copy it might be expensive. "Hockeytown Hero" by Shelley Lazarus is also a good one, even though it's written for kids. She interviewed Steve and some of his family members for it. "Steve Yzerman, The Quiet Captain" is a thin paperback by Paul Harris that's a quick read and very good. "Yzerman", the Doug Hunter book, isn't bad, but it does have a lot of inaccuracies in it, which in my opinion, are inexcusable. He never talked to Stevie directly for the book, but he talked to enough people close to Stevie so he should have his facts straight. Plus, some of the things he got wrong are common knowledge, or at least found fairly easily through some quick research. He also kind of tends to go on and on for pages about technical stuff for playing hockey. Despite this, I think it's still worth reading. Stay away from "Of Ice and Men," which is four bios in one, by Bruce Dowbiggin. The Stevie chapter is just full of errors and you start to wonder if the author even bothered to do any research at all. Also, "A Wing...And A Hero" by Gary Morrison is just flat-out awful!!! It's a self-published book that repeats itself over and over. The guy just can't write. He says he sent Stevie a copy of the manuscript hoping for his authorization and never got it. Well, it's not surprising. It's awful.

I used to point that out to people - "come on, it's Eklund! Any one of us could be just as accurate using a Magic 8 Ball!" - but I've stopped because people continue to regurgitate his spewed garbage. As for that pic, it looks like Severus Snape with a glandular problem...

Go back and read my post...at no point did I say I didn't like them. DO NOT put words in my mouth. I said the lettering looked off kilter because of the armpit panels and I wasn't thrilled with the rounded hem, but they at least look pretty much the same. As for Bettman - yeah, I will "lob cannonballs" at him for things I don't like in the NHL because, as commissioner, he is the one who ultimately okays any changes about anything NHL, from puck designs to where teams will be located. He's a clueless asshat.

They're not bad...but I don't like that stripe around the elbow. It reminds me of the outfits the Brady kids wore when they went on that dance show to win money for an anniversary gift for their parents. I think they called themselves the Silver Platters or something...

From that picture Hull has his whole freaking leg in the crease and it sure doesn't look like he has "control" of the puck to me. Still, the rule at the time was, if any part of the skate is in the crease, the goal is disallowed. That was the season Homer had about 142 goals disallowed because he always had the teeniest part of his big toe in the crease. And from what I remember at the time, the play was reviewed after Bettman had already handed the Cup to the Stars and they were in their dressing room partying... half an hour later, the NHL officials were like, "oops." At that point, what are they going to do? Knock on the Stars' dressing room and say, "Excuse me, we made an error - upon reviewing the play, Hull, your skate was in the crease so the goal didn't count. You've got to go back out there and finish playing the game." I mean, there's no precedent for that situation. Still, I think the Stars' 1999 Cup ought to have an asterisk next to it, saying due to an oversight of the skate in the crease rule, the Stars were prematurely awarded the Stanley Cup, but due to the length of time post-game in which the error was discovered, the NHL allowed the team to keep the Cup. Or something like that.

Do you really expect anything more from Gary Bettman?? He's clueless about hockey, why should he be any more clued in about hockey sweaters?

I noticed that...I'm glad that there are no major redesigns but that lettering bugs me - it looks really off-center because of where the lettering starts due to the stretchy armpit panels. And I'm not digging the rounded hemline, either. However, these are small complaints. It does, however, make me really curious to see how the Wings logo is going to fit on that center panel...since the panel gets quite a bit narrower toward the top, just how much smaller will the Wings logo be?

It sucks. It reminds me of some cartoon superhero.

This is kind of like the "what would have happened if Vlady hadn't been hurt?" thread that pops up once in a while. It's fun to speculate but sadly we will never know. And please, no more "Bring Back D-Mac" threads...I really wish people would stop the nostalgia train already. I'm all for bringing former Wings back to the team but only if they fill a need the team presently has, not because they are former Wings.

I never really liked their old logo - I always thought it was kind of silly-looking and childish, like the Ducks old duckhead logo. I liked the one with the penguin head on top of the triangle, but I hated the rest of the sweater. If they could put that logo on the old traditional sweater, that'd be sweet.

Dallas' supposedly new sweater design has numbers on the front. I hate it and I really hope no one else does it. I am hoping there are no major changes to the Wings' sweater. I would hate to see vertical contrast piping down the sides like on the Preds' new sweaters (or even worse, silver vertical piping!) and some funky sleeve treatments. And please, NO NUMBERS ON THE FRONT OF THE SWEATERS!!!! Good God, this is hockey, not soccer, basketball or baseball!!

I don't know...I'll need to see the front. The way the back is designed it kind of reminds me of one of those oversized with the picture of a bikini-clad body on it, like this - See the resemblance?

In the pic of the Preds players wearing the new sweaters, is Vernon Fiddler wearing his underwear or pajama bottoms?
