Thanks for posting the stats...I was going to but you beat me to it. Dom has been nothing short of fantastic for us this season. No, he's not as good as he was for us back in 2002, but he's done everything expected of him, and then some. He's probably the second or third best goaltender in the NHL this season. He has earned the opportunity to come back for the 2007-08 season if he wants to. I shudder at the thought of an Osgood/Howard pairing next year. Even Osgood/McLennan. Anything that has Osgood as the #1 goalie. And nowhere are you going to get a starting goalie as good as Dom who will play for what Dom is getting. We're simply not able to pay $6-7 million for a goalie. Sign Dom for one more season and use some of the money saved to sign Datsyuk (as long as he has the post-season we all expect him - and he needs - to have).

You seriously want to get rid of Hasek?? He's been nothing short of stellar this season. So, he's 41 years old...if the guy can play, he can play. You've got to be kidding if you think that Ozzie is a better option than Hasek for next season. Ozzie's fine as Dom's backup but no way should he be #1 while Howard polishes his skills in Grand Rapids. IMO, sign Dom for one more year and give the kids in GR another year under their belts. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better goalie than Dom who is willing to play for what he's getting paid in free agency with the salary cap. Hell, you couldn't even trade for a better goalie that makes around what Dom makes. Dom is a spectacular bargain in the new NHL. But yeah, Lang has to go. I'd let Maltby go too, as much as I like him. Grigorenko's opportunity passed him by, thanks to that accident. Let him go, too. The rest on that list should stay.

Yes, definitely a classy move on Niemenen's part, but he still deserves a suspension.

I found a roster from 1993-94, looked at the ages of the players, assuming the younger players were more likely to have scored their first NHL goal that season, then went to the NHLPA web site and started looking them up.

That's exactly it...Stevie's got the intangibles that no one else has. That alone puts him right up there. His leadership was second to none, and his ability to inspire was, well...inspiring. And the way he played in the 2002 playoffs on nothing but sheer guts and determination is one of the greatest efforts ever in sports. I'd agree with putting him at 5th best ever. He would be the first player I would choose for my all-time all-star team, too. Just a couple more cents here - one of the reasons Stevie never got the recognition he deserved in his prime (the years he was scoring all those goals and racking up 100+ points a season) was that Gretzky and Lemieux were doing the same thing, plus they were winning Stanley Cups, too. G and L had better teams around them, whereas the Wings were still building a winning team. They were better, but they weren't quite Stanley Cup material yet. By the time the Wings were Cup bound, Stevie had changed his game to a more defensive style, thanks to one Mr. William Scott Bowman. As a result he wasn't scoring goals at nearly the same pace he had for the six seasons prior to Bowman's arrival, yet the team was winning more and eventually did win the Cup. Add to that the fact that Stevie has always been a rather low-key person and definitely not a media *****, and you've got a fantastic player who pretty much flew under the radar for most of his career. It really wasn't until after the Wings won the Cup in 1997 that Stevie finally started to get some of the recognition he deserved, and by then he was scoring less than 40 goals a season.

It's always been like that, at least as far back as I can remember...every time I go into a Little Caesar's it reminds me of the Joe. That smell is synonomous with Red Wings hockey to me.

Why should it be announced?? Yes, it was a significant milestone, but the Stars were playing in Nashville. Regardless of how good a player Modano is, he wears the wrong jersey and would have been booed. The Nashville fans are classless in that way. Why risk showing the entire NHL fanbase just how classless your organization is? And yeah, I wonder how much of it was by design, because of Modano's feelings about contracting the Nashville franchise. On the other hand, Jim Lites has shown himself to be a big, fat whiner in complaining about the supposed snub. At least the TV announcers mentioned the milestone. There were probably more people watching on TV than there were in the arena, so it's not like no one heard about it.

LOL I know!!! There's one picture where his hair is so long and...well, poofy!!! I personally love the elementary school pic where he's wearing a shirt with cartoon elephants on it (page 14 if anyone wants to check it out). But I haven't heard anything about a DVD either. I sure wish the Wings would put one out...I know I would buy it on the first day it was out!!

In the Detroit area you can also listen to Wings games on WKRK, 97.1 on the FM dial - same broadcast, much better reception. But I know what you mean about not being able to listen to the Wings or the Tigers via the internet - last Opening Day for the Tigers I was at work so I thought, hey I'll listen to the game over the internet. I got all set, listened to the pregame, and then...silence. It wasn't until later I found out that MLB and the NHL black out internet broadcasts of games. It does suck because if I move out of the Detroit area (which I may have to do for work) I won't be able to listen over the internet.

Talk like that makes me angry so I just try not to listen to it. It's not worth getting my blood pressure up over. Besides, the last time people were talking this negatively about the Wings was the 1996-97 season. The year before they had set the NHL record for most victories in a season and lost to Colorado in the conference finals. The year before that they got to the Cup final but got swept by New Jersey. They were playing lousy hockey...completely uninspired, lackadasical...it almost looked like they didn't care. They went 3-4-3 in the final 10 games of the season. Their record was a far cry from that 62 wins they had the season before - I think they won like 38 games or something. A good word to describe that team in the regular season is "mediocre." People were up in arms. Yet, after a somewhat shaky start in the playoffs against St. Louis, they won the Stanley Cup. So, no worries here. Would I like to see them playing better? Sure, and Ozzie in net tonight against the Preds scares the bejesus out of me. But if they lose tonight it's not the end of the world. I personally would rather they don't get the President's Trophy...we only won the Cup once when we won the President's Trophy. Whether we finish first or fourth in the conference doesn't matter to me, either, because at some point in the playoffs we're going to play a team that kicked our asses in the regular season. That's just how it is. We just need to finish strong and start getting our guys healthy so they can get the line combos straightened out before the playoffs.
