Peguins Declare Impasse in Arena Talks...

Are we fairly certain the Pens would go to Kansas City? I mean, the NHL already tried that 30 years ago and couldn't cut it, so they bailed after 2 seasons. I think it would be a mistake to put a team there. Of course Bettman put a team in Atlanta again, too, so who knows?

    Bootland recalled from Grand Rapids

*rolls eyes* Sorry, I'm not convinced. I have seen nothing from this guy that makes me believe he belongs on an NHL roster, even for a game or two as a fill in. All he's good for is taking stupid, ill-timed penalties. However, I'd love for him to prove me wrong, come in here and have a couple of fantastic games.

    Bootland recalled from Grand Rapids

Wasn't there someone better we could have called up than Bootland?? I mean, he's a total waste of space. "Tough guy?" Yeah, right. We might as well just spot Nashville three power plays before the game even starts. And how can TSN.ca say Homer's out indefinitely? Everything else I've been reading says he's only going to be out a couple of games.
  4. I met quite a few Wings over the years at various places (I used to go to the Post Bar after games a lot and there were always at least 4-5 Wings there). I met almost everyone from the 1996-97 Cup team, at various places around town and signings except for Mike Vernon. I have a Cup champions t-shirt that's signed by everyone except Vernie and Konstantinov. Last spring I was in Columbus and actually rode up in the elevator with Lidstrom, Lilja, Homer, and Franzen. I've probably met Stevie the most, cuz he's my favorite (like, duh!) and I always tried to go whenever he was doing a signing. He's always very nice and personable. And he will personalize autographs...some of them won't. My best friend used to work at a swimwear store at the Somerset Collection and Shanny and his then-girlfriend (now his wife) came in shopping for a swimsuit for her. Shanny was chatting with my friend while Cathy was trying on suits and Cathy didn't like that. My friend said Cathy gave her such an evil eye. But Shanny was really nice. In early 1997 my friend and I went to a dance club in Pontiac called Industry (it's no longer there). We ran into Draper, McCarty and Osgood there and spent quite a bit of time talking to Drapes. He even bought us beers. My friend was wearing a Paul Coffey sweater and Drapes was ribbing her about that. He convinced her to take it off (she had a t-shirt on underneath) and he put it on. Mac came by and teased Drapes about always wanting to be a defenceman. LOL Mac didn't stay and talk with us though - he was too busy hitting on hot chicks on the dance floor...and he can't dance.

    Today's NHL.com frozen moment

I can't see the picture...I just get a blank page with FROZEN MOMENT across the top.

Zetterberg out 2-3 weeks (inflamed disc)

This sucks donkey balls but it could be worse. Hank will get some rest and Fil and Hudler will get more ice time, better preparing them for the playoffs. An inflamed disk will heal with rest whereas a herniated disk doesn't always. I know...I've had both. And just ask Bert.

Wings acquire Kyle Calder in 3-way deal

Okay, I'm not totally sold on him but being UFA vs. having time remaining on his contract makes sense to me. I'm not concerned about Calder's +/- because he was playing with Philly and as we all know, Philly sucks big toes this year. I still think (hope?) there's another deal in the works. We still have 19 hours to go...

Costs? UFA status?? Anyone know what they are?

    Matt Hussy Recalled

Maybe a trade is in the works that would send two current roster players in return for one player? That would make some sense then, to have another GR call-up without sending Ellis down. Taking two guys off the roster and only adding one would leave a gap. I know!! I don't want to miss anything. Although I'm pretty sure we can sleep tonight knowing they're not going to announce any trades at 4 AM. LOL

    Z's pops

Uhh, no, I would imagine not. I guess they would bring some significant male figure in their lives, like a mentor or someone. Last year Shanny brought his father-in-law along and this year Nik Kronwall brought his older brother. Shanny's dad died when he was around 19 and Nik's dad died when he was 11. Maltby and Schneider also brought their fathers-in-law this year - both brought their dads last year. Besides, it's not just dads on the trip - Chelios has his two sons, Dean and Jake, on the trip with him. Apparently they're meeting up with Cheli's dad Gus in Phoenix.

FORSBERG TO BE TRADED (WITHIN THE NEXT 24HRS)

He can't even find a comfortable skate boot to stuff his wonky ankle in. He supposedly has tried the skates of all his teammates and none of them offer him the comfort and/or stability he needs. If it wasn't for that ankle I'd say go for him in a heartbeat. But that injury just isn't healing properly and it scares me. Just how much would he be able to play - if at all - should the Wings acquire him? Unless something happens between now and the trade deadline where he either finds a skate that works for him and will let him play or that ankle gets better, I hope the Wings take a pass on him. We need a player who can help us in the playoffs, not one who will be sitting in the press box at a time when the games count the most.

    where were you when...

I wasn't at Game 4 but I watched it at home with my family, and I bawled like a baby! First, when the Wings won and then when Stevie took the Cup and the team held back so he could skate around the Joe alone. That has to be one of my sweetest Wings memories ever. Even though I didn't get to see any of those Cup final games in person, my friend Lori and I went downtown the day before Game 4. The Wings were up 3 games to none and you just knew - you knew - that, barring a complete and total meltdown, the Wings were going to win the Stanley Cup. On our way into the city, we saw so many of those car flags; it seemed every car had a flag or some sort of Wings logo on it somewhere. There was such a joyous feeling - everyone was happy. People were honking and waving, shouting out "Go Wings!" when you were stopped at a street light. Once we got downtown the euphoria was palpable - it didn't feel like downtown Detroit usually felt. I don't think I ever saw that many people in Wings gear outside of the Joe on game day. Everyone was wearing a jersey or t-shirt. The Spirit of Detroit statue even got into the act that year! Lori and I of course brought our cameras and we took pictures all over downtown, including in front of that statue and at the top of the steps at the Joe. When we were by the statue, we were even interviewed by a Philadelphia TV station! Detroit often gets kicked around because of its high crime rate (which is actually mostly in the neighborhoods, not downtown) and its industrial, blue-collar rep, but we sure do come together for our sports teams. It was a wonderful afternoon to walk around the city and just bask in the Red Wing glow that enveloped everyone. It didn't matter if you were black or white, rich or poor, we were all Red Wing fans and that's all that mattered.

    Shanahan seeking a 2-yr deal at $5M/season

Meaningless stats? Are you or are you not trying to say Shanny's not worth what he's asking based on playoff performance? Well, there it is. Why are these stats meaningless when trying to argue for Shanny staying but everything when you're trying to say Shanny doesn't deserve his pay day? I mean, playoff production seems to be the sole criterion for slamming the door in Shanny's face. So, again I say, there it is. And as far as the young kids being hungry come April, there won't be anything to be hungry about if we don't score enough goals to win enough games for them to have anything to be hungry over. We're going to need a TON of goal scoring if we sign Belfour. No Shanny = no playoffs. Period. Okay fine...I know when I'm not going to win an argument so I'm done trying to argue this point. I'm throwing my hands up and walking away from you morons on this topic. You are so determined to get rid of one of our best players. I just don't get it. I'm sticking by my opinion that the Detroit Red Wings are a MUCH BETTER TEAM with Brendan Shanahan in the lineup than they would be without him. That is based on everything he has done for the team in the past 10 years, not just the last few playoff runs because frankly, if we got rid of everyone who played poorly since 2003 there would be no one left on the team, save Stevie (who just retired, so he'd be gone anyway) and Zetterberg. I'm through with this topic. Peace out, folks. :hippie:

    Shanahan seeking a 2-yr deal at $5M/season

But that was my point - NONE of these players who scored 38+ goals in the regular season really performed all that well in the playoffs. Why is Shanny being singled out as some sort of money-hungry pariah, based solely on what he did in the playoffs? Jokkinen's team didn't even make the playoffs, and he's getting $6 million next season! No one is judging him on playoff performance, because they can't. Perimiter goals or not, Shanny's goals still count and he scored 40 of 'em for us during the season. That kind of production is not easily replaceable. I don't think this team should be so quick to throw that away just to "develop" a GR kid who would be better off with more ice time with the Griffs. All of you people who are ready to rip the Red Wing crest from Shanny's sweater are the same ones who, should he leave, will be screaming on these boards come January about how we should have signed him because we could sure use his goal scoring. And. IMO, he does use his size...but you say poTAYto and I say poTAHto... B) Maybe...I'm not sure. I took the salaries from NHLPA.com, and they are for the 06-07 season, which is why Shanny's salary is "N/A", becasue technically he doesn't have a salary yet. Crosby could have made more this past season - the $850K is probably his base salary for next season.

    Shanahan seeking a 2-yr deal at $5M/season

Just for s***s and giggles, I looked up the top goal scorers in the league last year and did a comparison between what they did in the regular season and what they did in the playoffs. I did not use player position in the criteria. But looking at this information, Shanny asking for $4.5 mil or even $5 mil is not outrageous (sorry about the formatting...it's the best I could do. ) - Player/Team.......Age... RSG...PG... #G... 06-07 Pay Selanne ANA.....36 .....40 ......6 .....16 ....$3.75 million Alfredsson OTT.34..... 43.......2......10.....$4.676 million Crosby PIT.........18 .....39....... N/A.. 0.... .$850,000 Hossa ATL........27......39........3 ......7......$6 million Zetterberg DET..26......39 .......6 ......6 ....$2.6 million Jokkinen FLA ....28 .....38 .......N/A ..0 ....$6 million Shahahan DET ..37 ....40 .......1 .......6 ....UFA RSG - regular season goals PG - playoff goals #G - number of playoff games played I do, however, believe a lot of these other offers are posutring by Shanny, and he will sign with the Wings, probably for around $3.5 mil a season for two or $4 mil. Looking at what some of these other guys who scored near 40 goals last season are getting paid, that's a relative bargain. I know a lot of people are ready to kick him to the curb but where are we going to get that kind of goal scoring for less money? I mean, Zetterberg's on the list, but with him AND Shanny we've got two guys who are going to give you 70-80 goals a season for about $7 million. That's a pretty good 1-2 punch in goal scoring. And with Shanny we've got size, which, even at 37 years of age he's not afraid to use.

    Shanahan seeking a 2-yr deal at $5M/season

Just an update to Shanny's situation - Don Shane on WXYZ-TV here in Detroit reported during the 6 PM news that Shanny has turned down Boston's offer.

    Shanahan seeking a 2-yr deal at $5M/season

The same report also says that Boston is out of the running "according to quite an informed source" and that the Blues and the Red Wings are the most likely desitnations for Shanny. Here's the translated article (thanks to Babelfish!) - "Friday July 07, the 2006 - (RDS.ca) - agent of Brendan Shanahan, Rick Curran, entrusted to the daily newspaper Detroit News which its customer studied the proposal of six teams and which a decision on her future will probably not come before the beginning the next week. Bruins of Boston seem most aggressive, since it is reported that they would consider to quote of 9,8 $ per two years with the large left winger. The rumours differ according to publications' since according to a quite informed source, the possibility of seeing Shanahan signing with Bruins are now null, report one in Boston Herald which supports that the Blues of Saint Louis and Red Wings would be the two teams which would negotiate more to attract the services of the 37 year old player. To return from there to the daily newspaper of Detroit, the Canadian would be at the height of the race, just like Kings of Los Angeles. The two teams would be ready to cross the course of the 4 M $ per season for the services of the 37 year old attacker, which gained 2,28 M $ last season. As regards Red Wings, they would have quoted two with Shanahan: a one year pact to 4 M $ or another one two years duration which would pay to him a little less annually. Last year, Shanahan knew its best season from the marketing year 1996-97, its first with Wings, marking 40 goals in more of collecting 41 assistances for 81 points in 82 meetings. " Here's the link to the original French article - 5 M $ pour Shanahan?

    Shanahan seeking a 2-yr deal at $5M/season

AMEN to that!! My desire for the Wings to re-sign Shanny has nothing to do with sentimentality. It has to do with the way he's played for the Wings since coming here in 1996, his leadership qualities and his will to win. He has been, and still is, one of the best players on this team in the last 10 years. No, he has not had good playoffs the past few years but tell me exactly how many Red Wings have?? I mean, there is a reason we haven't won the Cup since 2002. And like you said, this team is going to need some strong veteran leadership without Stevie. Shanny has been a team captain in the past and he's worn the A since coming to Detroit. He's a strong contender to wear the C next season but regardless of whether he gets it or it's given to Lids or someone else, his leadership will be needed and called upon. Shanny brings the rare combination of scoring, leadership and physicality that this team really needs. The pressing issue is in goal. With Holland considering Belfour and Hasek, we have a real problem. The team dumps Manny because he choked in the playoffs and looked rather mentally shaky while doing it, raising questions of whether he's cut out to be a #1 goalie in the NHL. Fine. So Holland says he will replace him. But Belfour or Hasek?? A shaky Legace would be better than BOTH of those guys! Yes, there were good goalies in their day (note the past tense "were"), but at 41, their best years are in the rear view mirror. Both have been oft injured in the last few seasons, although Dom was having a phenomenal season with the Senators before he got hurt. I just can't believe Holland thinks these are our two best options in goal.

Eklund: Biron could get traded to the Wings

Everyone who wants to trade Draper please listen to the other posters on this thread - DRAPER HAS A NO-TRADE CLAUSE!!! The only way Drapes will be traded is if he decides to waive his NTC and that's not about to happen. So please, when talking about trades, leave Draper's name out of the mix cuz he's not going anywhere.
