Bettman suspends Lidstrom, Datsyuk 1-game each
Canadian_Yzerman_Fan replied to Reds4Life's topic in General
WINGS FANS, MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD! WRITE TO THE NHL AND TELL THEM IF YOU ARE DISPLEASED AND WHY! for instance, i just wrote the following message: Hello, I did not see an appropriate subject line for this email and as a result I have a feeling it may end up being discarded and ignored quite easily. As a company/league that would not exist without its fans, I implore you to take this seriously and to see that it gets deserved attention by someone able to respond on this specific matter. I am writing in regards to the two Detroit Red Wings players that are facing suspension for missing out on the NHL All-Star game. I am aware that the league has heard plenty of agreement/disagreement from all sorts of directions, but I feel that the most important perspective is getting the least attention - that of the FANS! With the economy what it is right now, fans that are making a concession by only being able to go to one or two games all season have the right to see their players play. When the league suspends them for missing an exhibition event due to injury you are not punishing the players or teams as much as you are punishing the fans. I hope that the NHL has considered this and is thinking of how this affects the fans and how they are spending their money. It would be nice to know if those with tickets for Tuesdays game between the Red Wings and Blue Jackets have been issued an opportunity for a full refund on their tickets. If I bought tickets to see U2 and found out that the record company wasn't letting Bono participate in the concert because he missed a scheduled TV interview and autograph session due to having the flu, you had better believe I would want my money back. The only players that should be compelled to make a special trip to participate in the off-ice activities (at the ASG) when injured are those that have been voted in by the fans - because that is who they should be held accountable to. That being said, of course people understand when there are exceptions with good reason and the NHL has no shortage of talent for an event like this. For what the event is, having a few players miss out will not harm anything because there are so many great candidates that can step into their place. I hope this email and this point do not fall on deaf ears, and that the league cares how fans like myself are affected by these decisions. Further, I would appreciate a response from an NHL representative that is actually accountable for matters such as this. Thank you. -
Datsyuk Signs 7-year, $46.9M Contract Extension

Bahahahahahaha! hindsight, right? I thought this one was worth revisiting for sure -
For parity... it makes the standings closer causing more "excitement" in the playoff race at the end of the season... though the skill between teams may be distant, it does not appear that way on paper this way... that means the fans of the teams that aren't quite as good still feel good about their team because they are competing in the standings instead of being so far behind the league leaders... those who pay a lot more in depth attention will still know which teams are clearly better than others, but for the casual fan it doesn't look that way and that means more fans coming out to see and root for more teams... the end result is more money for more teams... keep arguing that the point system should be changed, but you're fighting a losing battle
-
The current point system has been put in place to meet certain ends, and it is doing so quite well. There is a smaller gap amongst all teams in the standings (causing a more competitive fight for playoff spots at the end of the season, instead of having it clearly set at the beginning of march with a month of coasting hockey with minor position jockying)... and... the nhl WANTS shootouts... they're entertaining... giving teams reason to make a shootout not happen is counter intuitive to what the league wants. Additionally, the owners are a tough bunch to win over on new point systems so it is very difficult to make anything happen edit: spelling

11/11 GDT: Penguins 7, Red Wings 6 (OT)
Canadian_Yzerman_Fan replied to I Red Wings I's topic in General
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Mark-Spizzi...eturns/77/17796 Despite the stakes not being quite as high, it appears Tuesday night's game vs. the Penguins is one the Wings have been anticipating for quite awhile, according to the Free Press' Helene St. James: Most of the Wings I spoke to today said they were excited to play the Penguins on Tuesday. The Wings beat Pittsburgh in the Stanley Cup finals, and then signed former Penguins Marian Hossa. “We had a good battle last year, and it’s the first game now, so it’s going to be fun,” Henrik Zetterberg said. “It’s a good team, and I think both of us want to win a little extra. It was a great final." Hossa joined the Wings in July after spurning an offer from the Penguins. "I didn't really know until the last two weeks, when I check the schedule," Hossa said. "There are lots of people I know there, a couple of good friends, so it's going to be real interesting." Johan Franzen, who has been out with a sprained knee, said he expects to play. Mike Babcock said the decision won't be made until tomorrow, but Franzen sure sounded like he expects to play. Dan Cleary wasn't at practice -- Babcock said it was a personal day, and that Cleary was not injured -- and Babcock said "we'll decide tomorrow morning on both those guys." If both play, the lines would look like this: Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Hossa Franzen-Zetterberg-Filppula Cleary-Draper-Samuelsson Hudler-Kopecky-Maltby On defense: Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Lilja-Meech Chris Osgood is starting in goal. It's good to know the players are a little extra fired up for this one for their own reasons. It should be a great game. I'm very excited for it! -

What happens if the Wings are over the cap 10/9?
Canadian_Yzerman_Fan replied to Donaldjr2448's topic in General
forgive me, i dont recall the source but i am certain i heard the forfeiting thing from a very credible source earlier this summer.... perhaps TSN, but i thought it was bettman either way it seems like an unlikely scenario... who is going to refuse to comply when the rest of the league is? -

Any team in violation of the salary cap - ceiling or floor - must forfeit all games... gm's arent that stupid though and will put players on waivers or make trades before that happens... if they didnt, im sure they would be out of a job pretty quick
