Canucks may take another RFA shot

for people who missed the comments under the brief article I had to post what this canucks fan said: "All I have to say is as a canuck fan i’m so jealous of detroit, where all 6th round draft choices become allstars and big time free agents just jump onto holland’s lap like bunnies at a playboy party. meanwhile gillis drives around the block trying to lure kids into his cargo van with candy and xboxes. " hahahahahaha it IS good to be a wings fan!

    Holland on Hossa

I think this means that the current idea for line combinations might be: 1a) Holmstrom - Datsyuk - Hossa 1b) Franzen - Zetterberg - Filpulla I say that because you probably want Homer and Mule on opposite lines as they're big body, net presence guys... Holland's indication that Hossa will play with one of Z or D splits the two of them up... Zetterberg and Mule showed some great chemistry at times in the playoffs... and Flip is ready to break up this year i think

    Holland on Hossa

on a video on tsn.ca he also said that he expects hossa to play with either datsyuk or zetterberg.... not the automatic 2nd line position that people on this board seem to expect

Now that Hossa is a Wing

ok, so i've found 2 breakdowns of the red wings salary cap position now but they don't match this first link doesn't have hossa updated yet, but counting that would leave 2.5 Million left under the cap http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=DET the second is from this site and has 4 Million left... http://www.letsgowings.com/salarychart/index.php so one of these must be wrong, I'm just not sure where the difference is.... though I would assume the wings would have 4million rather than 2.5 just because I know holland is aware of his responsibilities still and always likes to have a little wiggle room in case of injuries (so trades can be made)

Now that Hossa is a Wing

I was expecting something like.... Now that Hossa is a wing, all we have to do is get Filpulla an extension and sign a drake replacement with Hossa's 7.4M the wings only have about 2.5M left under the cap, so i would expect coupling that with our surplus of Dmen, a trade may go down

Most outrageous, overpaid deals in recent history?

overpayments have usually been a result of desperate free agent signings.... but Bryan McCabe is a good example of a contract extension gone terribly wrong... the sad case of a player having a career year at the end of his contact and never playing up to that level since... 5.75M per year for 5 or 6 years plus signing bonuses, etc... and now its fun to watch how they can't trade him and dont want to take the hit of buying him out of the contract... about as funny as watching the isles buy out yashin's crazy contract last year

    Bertuzzi placed on waivers.

Bahahahahaha!!! hindsight's a ***** i couldn't believe the ducks were willing to pay him that kind of money last year let's see who over pays him now

    Crazy Trade Idea

    Darcy Tucker

There has been growing speculation that Maple Leafs forward Darcy Tucker is not in the team's future plans, meaning that his contract would be bought out by the end of the month. Source - http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/tor080612.html With the added possibility of Red Wings grinder Dallas Drake retiring, would Tucker be a viable option for filling that 3rd line, with his instigating, pest-like presence? I've never really liked the guy very much, but assuming he's willing to have his ice time cut back, and play a specific role for not too much money (which he could obviously afford to do following a contract buyout), I could see him being effective for the Wings. Opinions?

SCF Game 1 GDT: Red Wings 4, Penguins 0

SCF Game 1 GDT: Red Wings 4, Penguins 0

Does anyone else find it strange that Terrien has elected to start Hall in place of a healthy and excited Gary Roberts??? This guy's 4th line presence actually gave me something to be concerned about... I've been watching the pens closely throughout the playoffs and he has been outstanding on the forecheck, and with creating chances... Hall on the other hand... I really can't think of ANYTHING that he has done one bit of confidence for this series is that Babcock wins the coaching battle by a landslide

    Conn Smythe Candidates

First off forgive me if you feel that I am jumping the gun with this topic, but the wings are playing a tremendous team game, far beyond any that I can recall seeing in quite some time, and I truly believe they have to be considered the cup favorite at this point. That being said, how do you choose a top performer when the real reason we are where we are is the functioning of the unit as a whole? The Red Wings have several candidates for who can be considered their top player in this post season. These are my top 4: 1. Johan Franzen really seems like the "no-brainer" obvious choice, not only with his supreme goal scoring (and timely at that; 5 GWGs), but also by so strongly fulfilling his role as a big body, a penalty killer, and so on. 2. Chris Osgood is now a perfect 8-0 since taking over between the pipes, and though he hasn't had to steal us a game he has been making big saves when called upon. His GAA, record, and SV% necessitate his name being on this short list. 3. Nicklas Lidstrom has continued to be the outstanding and seemingly infallible blueliner that we have somehow come to expect. He neutralizes offensive chances against, gets the puck safely out of the defensive zone, and poses as a serious offensive threat. Though this team is deep on the back end, it's hard to imagine the stability of the entire core without him in the lineup night after night. 4. Henrik Zetterberg plays in all situations, is tied with Franzen for the team points lead, and has 3 game winners in this post-season himself. He is arguably the best 2-way player in the game today (I am not saying he is better than Datsyuk; that is just an impossible choice that I'm glad I don't have to worry myself with... hence "arguably"), and the amount that he has been called upon and produced on face-offs has been integral to this teams success. Further Henrik appears to be emerging as a leader, and dare I say it - potentially the next captain once Lidstrom decides to hang em up. In my opinion, if Franzen gets back and keeps doing what he has been doing it is going to be tough for him to not win the post-season MVP award. I've never been much of an Osgood fan, but he has really picked up his game and is doing all that we could hope so far. He's been really good, but with our team style he hasn't been called upon to be great. I'm not saying he can or can't do it, but the fact that he doesn't need to be may take him out of the running. Lidstrom is impossible to overlook, but perhaps the fact that he has one of these trophies under his belt may make him take a back seat if there is another worthy candidate (I remember in '02 there was a slight sense of surprise when captain Yzerman wasn't named for his 2nd Conn Smythe; though Nick was still an excellent choice). I personally think that in the end the named recipient will be #40, and deservedly so (see reasons above). Zetterberg has been outstanding in every way and having Franzen miss a few games may even highlight that. I'm curious to know what other fans think. Who would your choice be, and why? Should anyone be added to this list? Should I be hanged for jinxing the Red Wings playoff chances by starting a thread about this too early?

On Ice Sounds Drowning Out Announcers?

mixing the game sound properly is one thing thta CBC does right... I find that I can't stand watching the american feeds usually for two reasons: 1) the main action following camera is zoomed out too far (so they can see the entire defensive zone from the end boards to the blue line) and 2) the game sound is really withdrawn to make the commentary easy I feel that both of these really take away from the intensity of the game. On the first point it makes things too hard too see and you feel like you're in the nose bleeds... it's a bit more work for the camera man and there is more on screen motion/panning, but it really gets the viewer into a more involved position On the second point, regardless of who the commentators are (annoying or not), not having enough game sound really makes things seem dull even in a good game. They're basically bringing down the tempo of the game to the lackluster performance of the announcers. Having the elevated game sound forces these guys to be a bit more excited and engaged with the game rather than those guys that just drift off from the action to talk about some loser celebrity that's in the audience in a monotonous unenthusiastic voice. I usually don't enjoy much of what the announcers have to say regardless, but they really can influence the tone of the game for the at home viewer.

What day does Rd. 2 start for the Wings?

I can't seem to find it anywhere, so it may not be announced yet, but I was just wondering if anyone maybe has some inside info about when we will be starting round 2... I really want to make the trip down to JLA for either game 1 or 2 but can only go on either Thursday or Sunday, and I want to make sure I don't miss out on getting good seats by waiting too long. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What day does Rd. 2 start for the Wings?

I would figure that wouldnt matter being as the wings are hosting regardless... I don't see why they wouldnt be able to schedule the first 2 games at least

    Hasek..

EXACLTY what i was thinking... Hasek hasn't been terrible by any means, and has even had some very good saves, but it just seems like some of the one's he's letting in are the one's you'd expect him to stop (I'm talking about that 3rd goal specifically... and perhaps the weak 5-hole goal in game 2)

Could Yzerman be the next Leaf's GM?

weird... i had the EXACT same experience... really good ribs, and no volume on the tv... and yeah, i dont like the idea of the leafs taking away yzerman or holland from this organization.. living close to toronto and being a wings fan forces me into an anti-leaf position

    Olli Jokinen Available?

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/trade_deadline/featu...13&hubname= "Olli Jokinen Position: Centre Team: Florida Panthers Age: 28 Rumoured Suitors? - While Bertuzzi and Roberts are the hot names emerging from Florida, it's surprising to hear Olli Jokinen being floated around in circles as well. He signed a four-year, $21.5 million contract last year to stay in Florida, but rumblings out of the Sunshine State suggest the team is listening to offer. With Peter Forsberg gone, he's the next best available player based on his skill, durability and contract status. " He definitely is the best player out there in rumours now. His contract makes him a bit tough to take on though. Can we afford him at all? Maybe if we moved Lang? The other problem is he is a center, and we definitely have enough of those already. Either way, I think he'd be that additional high impact scoring player that could be a great addition to this roster.
