The BEST way to accelerate or rebuild would be wining the #1 overall pick and trading it to Ottawa for their combo of two picks between 2 and 4, if that materializes. I'd also keep Montreal's number handy, because if their pick can be used on Askarov I'd be trading Mantha for that pick and a prospect/payer/pick. IF you could walk away from this draft with 2 of Stutz, Rossi, Raymond, Drysdale, et all and Askarov that would be massive.

I'd opt for Abby since his contract is longer and more miserable to use a conventional buyout on.

I was thinking of a compliance buyout, like the ones post lockout... this is apparently being discussed because of the impact this will likely have on the cap. If you have 1 freebie I think you'd have to axe Abby?

If we had the 1st pick and Ottawa had the 2nd plus 3, 4 or even... I'd gladly trade the 1st overall for those picks.

What he wants and what's gonna happen are two totally different things!

They already have plans in the works to do just that... The anti-Red Wings bias of the league is really, really shining through. The only teams in the draft lottery really hurt by this early end to the season are teams like Montreal who were/are actively tanking. Teams that are bad, Detroit, Ottawa, SJ, LA, etc have been bad ALL season, that MUST be taken into account! Imagine in this deep draft, where if their is a god we'd have the 1st pick, we end up picking 6+; it sets this team back 3 years minimum.

If anything we should be guaranteed the 1st pick... this wasn't a tank... it was the bottom of our cycle.

If we somehow get cheated by the league under the pretense of "fairness" to other much better teams.... and lose out on at worst the 4th overall pick... I'd be wild.

An article over on the Athletic states some NHL executives are talking about adjusting the lottery... some are suggesting a tournament. Can you imagine how f***ed we'd be if they make a change like that.

It would be better than the opaque method they use now... I 100% believe it's rigged. Maybe I'm a nutter, but the results always seem so "convenient"... until corona when the draft was scheduled to be in Montreal I've been saying they would lotto the first pick... drafting a French Canadian kid in Montreal. The league would want that story to push, the life long dream BS, etc. I still think they may go that way, even if the draft isn't held in the usual manner to generate a 'good news story' out of the 2019-20 season. It ultimately boils down to this, I have 0 trust in Bettman and Daly.

The Red Wings won't notice much difference at home.

You don't buy out Neilson and/or Abby... we've got cap to burn... send them to the AHL to "mentor" their cap hit doesn't get extended and like I said their cap hit along with the players replacing them won't eat up all our cap, not even close.

The draft is most definitely rigged... it's an opaque process for that very reason. Lafreniere (the top prospect) is French Canadian, Montreal is missing the playoffs, the draft is in Montreal... I'll give you once guess as to what team wins the draft "lotto".
