Sedin losing his cool in last night's game. Pretty good butt end to the back of the head, but also a nice dive by Couture.

I agree. They've not treated him well there and he's handled it as a consummate professional. It's not that I dislike the guy, just making the disclaimer that I have never particularly been a fan. But he's a good player who would definitely benefit if they moved him. He's got to be dying to get out of Vancouver and get a fresh start at this point. Maybe it's just the creepiness of having to sign and deal with identical twins as a package deal that makes the whole franchise spooky.

He did the same thing to Luongo last year against the Kings too. Luongo was in no way a factor for why they were losing to the Kings. Frankly I'm amazed AV has kept his job this long. I think he plays a large part in the whining, spineless culture that seems prevalent in Vancouver. There's good players on that team, but man something is off. I don't even particularly care for Luongo but man they've jerked him around. Bad talent management.

One of my favorite memories of Steve Yzerman is him mocking Domi from the bench after Probert won his fight with Domi on the rematch. Stevie was still fairly softspoken at the time so it was hilarious to see. Domi was tough for how small he was relative to the guy's he fought with, but the championship belt was garbage that he deserved to be beat down for. The hand waving deserves the same. Found it. 1:47 mark

Abdelkader suspended 2 games for hit on Lydman

Frankly any suspension looks insane relative to the Weber head slam. The league majorly blew it on that one. They're trying to protect players heads but don't suspend Weber for slamming a player's head into the boards. -

Which is why hits to the head are not inherently illegal. The NHL has a video demonstrating legal and illegal hits that involve contact to the head. They also account for whether or not a player moved just prior to contact being made. The game is fast and there's always going to be grey areas, which is where I think this hit lies. But players also need to recognize when what they're attempting is a high risk hit and make sure they contact the body solidly. That's ultimately what checking is supposed to be and if they can manage to get back to more of that, I'm all for it. Unfortunately there's going to be some questionable calls and suspensions as the league and players adjust. These refs can't even manage to make a simple hooking call consistently. I'm not surprised they're all over the map regarding hits they have to evaluate at full speed. For those worrying that there's no hitting in the game anymore, watch the Kings-Blues series. -

I absolutely agree. It's sad that it took them what, over 10 years to finally get rid of the seamless glass that players were complaining about injuries from the very start. Shanny himself used to use those flimsy shoulder pads. That didn't stop him from hitting guys. You don't want players to get injured but maybe if they hitter feels the impact more he'll be more careful about keeping his elbows tucked and not leaping at a guy. As I stated in my post. -

To keep the GDT from getting dominated by discussion of Abby's hit, let's discuss it here: http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/topic/74573-abby-has-nhl-hearing-today-at-4-pm-over-lydman-hit/ -

It may help him that he did get the 5 minute major and ejection, but I'd still be surprised if he didn't get something. Last season Ovechkin got 3 games for a hit where he left his feet and caught the guys head in spite of also getting a lot of his body. Ovie's skates were off the ice prior to contact and he has a suspension history, but the guy he hit was ok and continued to play. This will be an interesting one. It comes down to which way the suspension winds are blowing in the NHL. As the OP stated, with the current climate a suspension seems likely. -

Agreed. I don't like these exploding upwards hits but don't want to get into a frame by frame breakdown. I'm guessing 2 games? He go a 5 minute major in the game and an ejection. It seems like that factors into suspensions. He also has no suspension history and they typically weigh missing playoff games more. -
I still have hope for Kesler if he gets out of Vancouver. So many great qualities if he can just reign in the yapping and diving. But Vancouver has a pretty whiny flopping team culture. I'm not much of a Luongo fan but he's a good goalie and could benefit as well if Vancouver would just get him to another team and give him the opportunity to redeem himself. Honestly though the first move is probably to fire AV. Bring in another coach and try to change the culture there.

Hush your mouth! The Blues match up well with the Kings. They have less offensive talent but manage to shut down the Kings offense well. Such a tight game tonight. It reminded me how much I hate Perron for his diving, Jackman for his cheapshotting, Oshie for his whining, and Backes just for being Backes. Though I'd take him on the WIngs

Golden opportunities handed to the Wings and they can't capitalize. Flip is playing like he has his gloves on the wrong hands. Kindl passing it to no one. Cutesy passes. Their best chance was when Dats cut through the middle to the net. Even on the PP you need guys moving to the net. -

This is the Game Day Thread. Let's keep it about tonight's game. If someone wants to start (another) thread about Holland's moves or lack thereof, go for it. But I'm tired of the game day thread being clogged up with posts about moves Holland didn't make AND the inevitable replies about fans being spoiled and smug lectures about what constitutes a real fan. A little over an hour until puck drop. -

Souray is a healthy scratch for the Ducks tonight. http://espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs/2013/story/_/id/9241866/2013-stanley-cup-playoffs-sheldon-souray-healthy-scratch-anaheim-ducks -
It's interesting because I like Bylsma and generally think he's a good coach but multiple times in the playoffs now the Pens have gotten caught up in a run and gun mentality and it ends up costing them games. A big part of that blame has to be on coaching. Unless he's operating on the theory that Fleury will always let in a couple so Pittsburgh's strategy is to outgun their opponents rather than try to lock it down defensively?
-
I can't see them paying Flip around $5 mill if that's what his demands really are. Minus last season, he's shown himself to be a serviceable 35-40 point guy. With all the assets the Wings suddenly have on the blueline, it'll be interesting to see if they make a bold move to get a sniper or to bring in a true top pairing guy to help Kronner.
-
Because the only player to stick up for Jimmy Howard is usually Jimmy Howard.
-
Agreed. I'm certainly not a fan of either team, but if I have to pick the lesser of two evils, it's the Sharks.
-
Well you got your wish tonight thanks to Raffi headhunter Torres. Wins it in OT. Henrik Sedin with a terrible decision to throw the puck up the middle leads to the Sharks tying it with the goalie pulled. Torres with the OT winner in spite of the Nucks dominating.
-
I edited the thread title to clarify what I think you meant. You're asking what teams are better than the Wings, correct? And not which of the teams you listed are better than the others?
-
If it makes you feel better, it's a panel of guys and not just Shanny. He solicits multiple opinions. Ultimately I'm in favor of the NHL getting players back to the idea of hitting the full body when they hit and knowing when to bail out when it's a risky hit. I agree the suspension is a tough call though. If Eller gets up no problem there's likely no suspension.

Price gets a couple teeth knocked out. skates to the bench and casually hands them to the trainer. skates back to the goal. Karlsson also showing why he shouldn't have won the Norris on that first goal. Backhand pass across the middle over a guy's stick headed towards your own net??
