Sammy and Coliacovo definitely felt like patchwork moves at best after the Suter/Parise madness. Some of them have certainly worked out but Holland's penchant for bringing back former wings is almost pathological. I don't know if it's a lack of imagination or he's just overly fond of former Wings. I mean, Jason Williams. Really?

GDT 2/13 GDT : St. Louis Blues 4 at Red Wings 3 (OT)
haroldsnepsts replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
It seems like we play the Blues a couple times a week. Man these shortened seasons are odd. -
Yeah, honestly I may be giving too much weight to his playoff meltdowns. He's obviously a very good goalie but just seems mentally fragile or something. How they've handled the goalie situation in Vancouver certainly hasn't helped things. Luongo got yanked last playoffs, and he was absolutely not the problem. It's one thing to do that in a game if your team is getting shelled, but if a guy is truly your number one goalie, you don't sit him on the bench to "change things up."
-
Some of these goalies I don't see enough to comment for sure, but definitely not MAF. He has always struggled with consistency. Yes he makes highlight reel saves but they're often followed by backbreaking soft goals. Given his playoff meltdowns I wouldn't put Luongo over Jimmy either.

Agreed. The Kings seemed to revert back to the team from the first half of last season instead of the one that destroyed all comers in the playoffs. Though they lost Mitchell possibly for the year, which is huge. And Matt Greene is out too. So that's a big blow to their blueline. Richards has picked up some assists on the PP but otherwise isn't on the scoresheet as much as they need. And Penner is in the doghouse again. He especially has reverted to the lazy Penner from early last season instead of the Penner that was living up to his potential in the playoff run and playoffs.

You're not using Osgood's career as a touchstone, you're using Jimmy as a way to turn the thread back into a debate about Ozzy. Even your response to my warning is more about Osgood's career than having anything to do with Jimmy. The thread is ultimately about Howard being average or not and the side discussion of him being elite. A more accurate way of judging Jimmy's averageness or not is to compare him with his peers in the NHL, not a goalie who hasn't played a game in 3 years. Everyone else has managed to find ways to discuss the topic without derailing the thread into Osgood's greatness or lack thereof. Continue to troll about Osgood and you will be suspended.
-
Mostly i just started to drag the GDT off topic with my complaining about Mule's spear, so I figured I should start a thread. Seeing a replay, yes it was a hit from behind but he clearly survived. But Mule once again with the cheapshot. To me spearing is one of the dirtier plays in hockey. If someone on the blues had done this to the Wings, would it still be not that big of a deal? I'm guessing with the 5 minute PP and getting tossed for the game, he won't get a suspension, but given the NHL's track record who knows.
-
I know I shouldn't be surprised that yet another thread was turned into one about Osgood, but the topic is about Howard being average. Let's stick to that.
-
Exactly. The blueline is essentially considered a part of whatever zone the puck is currently in, so the puck has to completely cross the blueline before it is considered to have changed zones.
-
I guess I'm not sure what that's supposed to be showing. In order for the play to be onsides, the puck needs to be completely over the blueline before the players skate. So that pic doesn't really prove anything. In fact, the original picture shows that Dats was clearly in the zone before the puck completely crossed the blueline, so it sure looks like he was offsides. But I'm coming in partway through this discussion so maybe i'm missing the context. Like someone else said, I'd have to see a replay to really know for sure, but by the pictures of it Dats looked offsides.

Overall I have no problem with Pierre and like Doc. I like the NBC crew in general. But like I said, Olczyuk has consistently done this as an announcer. I said it as a joke, but it really is only a matter of time before he says "subtle interference" by the Wings because he talks about it every single game he announces of theirs. Even Emerick was making fun of him for it.
-
Especially considering he talks about the Wings "subtle interference" every single game he announces when they're playing.
-
Honestly that does look like it hit someone out front of Quick. Whether it was Cleary or the Kings player I can't tell. (I'm referring to the Ericsson goal)
-
He had a great game today, even without the last second goal. He looks poised out there. Taking his time and making great outlet passes, playing physical. He's likely never going to be a top pairing guy so there will be mistakes, but he's a solid middle pair and great on the PK.
-
I'm not one to harp on announcers. I think a lot of the perceived injustices are just because people are Wings fans and hear what they want to hear. But even on broadcasts for other teams, Olczyk is absolutely awful and unprofessional in his love for the Hawks and Pens and disdain for certain teams.
-
yeah, as a Kings fan I was hoping they'd come back playing like the team from the end of last season and playoffs. But they've started this season the way they did last season. And they can't really do that with only 48 games to play. They did look good today though. But Mitchell was a huge loss to their blueline. He was probably their best D man in the playoffs. Then to lose Greene too. They need other guys to step up. And Doughty tends to try to do too much and make mistakes. He made the bad play on E's goal I think.
-
I actually thought it squeaked between Quicks arm and body, but yeah, an ice patch?? Olczyk is awful.
-
That's a heartbreaker for the Kings. They're struggling as a team and played great this game overall. Jimmy just wouldn't let them score.
-
Wow. Two points stolen by Jimmy Howard with some help from Dats and E.
-
Honestly I don't know if that's on Quincey. I'd have to see it again but he was outnumbered down low and shouldn't have been. goal!!!
-
Jimmy held them in as long as he could...
-
Great shot by Mule, followed by a weak play by Mule in the corner getting pushed off the puck and giving up because he's tired. for me that's Franzen in a nutshell.
-
Honestly that's a pretty weak call. Tootoo had his stick up and so did Martinez. Should've let them both go.
-
I don't want to jinx it but Ericsson is having a great game. Doughty pulls a Lebda. Nice pass by Mule for the scoring chance by Z

Wings have 5 guys on the ice, right??
