    1/27 GDT : Red Wings 5 at Panthers 4

Watching the game last night, it dawned on me Franzen has been gone for 5 or 6 games. It doesn't look like the Wings miss him too much.

LA puts Mike Richards on waivers

Lombardi gave Richards another shot to find his game when he didn't buy him out this past offseason, like many were hoping he would. I don't know what's going on with Richards but he sure didn't capitalize on that second chance. He was a big part of the Kings first Cup and still contributed in the second, but man has his game fallen off. I don't know if it's wear and tear or just Mule-itis since he has the fat contract and a couple Stanley Cups.

Agreed. It's ugly, but effective. In the past we'd post warnings but after a while it would get buried in the thread (especially if it's a GDT), some people wouldn't see it and would do the things the mods specifically warned about. It's really just an attempt to make sure you guys are aware of the warning, like posting them in blue.

    Franzen on IR

Does anyone remember the hit in question? I just worry it's his noggin again.

    Franzen on IR

According to Khan: Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive · 23h23 hours ago Franzen injured on blindside hit by Klinkhammer last night, though he finished game. Holland said looks like he's out longer than tonight. ("last night" refers to the game against Edmonton)

    Osgood circa 2008 *Mod Advisory @ #18*

Resorting to calling me defensive and pulling out the "are you related to" joke? That's rookie stuff in bailing on an argument and trying to make someone look bad. Given how specifically familiar you are with Osgood's 2008 performance and how generally knowledgable you are about hockey, it's odd that you couldn't come up with a plausible reason on your own why Babcock would start the greatest goaltender of the modern era over Osgood, in spite of Ozzy looking very good during the half season he started. The answer is pretty obviously because Babcock is an overrated, terrible coach. If not for Ozzy, the Wings would've gotten knocked out in the first round, right? You said so yourself in the OP. You also wondered why Babcock didn't even start Ozzy in the first four games, in spite of Ozzy being an All-star. Hence, the 2008 Cup win is not really some great reflection of Babcock's coaching ability. Did I do it right? For the record, I'm truly not defensive or worked up. Just amused that you won't own up, when you're pretty transparent.

That's Crosby being a crybaby at its best. To his credit though, in a later interview when asked what player he'd build a team around, he picked Zetterberg.

Quick does it sometimes as well. He's a very aggressive goaltender. And honestly as much as I blame Mrazek for the goal (and Quick when he does it), they look idiotic chasing the shooter like that, but it also discounts all the times their super aggressive style works. I try to maintain the tone that Matt likes to say, where we're all in his basement drinking and arguing about the Wings, but in a good natured way. We're all ultimately Wings fans. But I won't pretend that it's not a struggle to keep that tone sometimes.

It was meant as a joke because of your Babcock fixation, so I'll lighten up when you do Kip. And I'm sure there was no attempt to discredit Babcock in spite of mentioning it in your OP and then wondering why he didn't start the All-Star Chris Osgood. Asking why Babcock didn't start Osgood isn't turning the discussion from Osgood's performance? You can pretend you do it to bait me, but until this thread I haven't been defending Babcock here in a while kip. There's no point because you will twist everything to portray Babcock in the most negative light. It's why I said it's become genuinely entertaining. It truly has been fun to watch how things get spun. At least be honest about your passive aggressive intent here with Ozzy and your obvious Babcock fixation. jeez.

The evidence is where he is on the ice. If he didn't chase Raymond, exactly how did he end up so far beyond his own net facing the back boards? Also, it's not a fact that it was a weak effort. It was your opinion, which is contrary to video evidence. If anything Mrazek gave too much effort and was overly aggressive. And if you look, I was critical at the time, and still am. He blew it and gave up a bad goal. But gave up on the play? please.

At the time I thought Ozzy should get the nod because he was playing so well, but when the other goalie is one of if not the best goaltender to ever play the game, a guy who has strapped teams on his back and carried them to the final rounds, you give him a shot. It's funny though that you're going all the way back to 2008 to try and chip away at Babcock's reputation and the "myth" of his genius. He's a coach who: Won a Stanley Cup Got to the Finals two other times (once with a cinderella team) won 2 Gold medals Is the only coach in the triple gold club. second fastest to 500 wins (Bowman being 1st) But the "myth of his genius" was formed on Ozzy's playoff run in 2008? Honestly at this point your Babcock fixation is genuinely entertaining.

Also, after watching the replay, the 3-on-2 was created in part by Weiss dogging it on the backcheck. He's near enough to his man that he can close on him, but stops skating. Kronwall ends up picking up Weiss's man, leaving Raymond wide open on the wing. But Weiss is too far away and still dogging it to catch up to Raymond on the switch with Kronwall. So Raymond has all the time in the world to get off a nice shot, pick up the rebound and wrap around the net completely untouched.

It's a moot point because Mrazek didn't give up on the play. Watching the replay, he played the initial shot well. It was a three on two and the puck carrier had a lot of room to work. Mrazek came out to play the angle. Unfortunately the shot hit him and it sounds like it caught part of his mask, and rebounded right back to Raymond. Instead of retreating to his net Mrazek is overly aggressive and chases Raymond beyond his own post. It was a bad play on his part, but he was great the rest of the game. The idea that a goalie would give up on a play leaving a wide open net is absurd.

He'd want the first one back, but otherwise a very good game from Mrazek. And I think Drew Miller has become the Wings most physical forward. He had a great game tonight overall. Weiss's minutes back down to under 11. I have to say I wasn't particularly impressed by him tonight.

It's not bias, Kindl just isn't good. There's a reason he's never held even the #6 spot on the roster for an entire season. He used to among the best on the team at getting his shot through from the point, but he has regressed there as well.

It seems like the Wings haven't been as good on faceoffs these last few games. Any theories on why? They were dominant for a while there.
