I agree to an extent, but it used to be done more often by hitting the guy who threw the initial check for the rest of the game, or going out and trying to crush their star players. There seemed to be more of attitude of "we'll get them back" but not so much dropping the gloves and jumping guys just because it was a clean hard hit. Guys would protect their teammates but there was also some acknowledgement of personal responsibility and getting caught with your head down. If someone was taking hard runs at Stevie, they'd probably be getting some attention from Probert. But if you hit pretty much anyone else with a clean hard hit, it just ramped up the intensity and hitting in the game. It didn't usually lead to play stopping because of an all out scrum after a clean hit. My biggest problem with it is that hitting is a big and legal part of the game. The idea is not just to crush the guy, but separate him from the puck and gain an advantage. Countless times that advantage is negated nowadays because the team that got hit starts jumping guys and the refs stop the play.

He definitely does. Mainly on hits like with Kesler and Miettinen. The wording of the rule is pretty vague. To me they're borderline charges when he jumps like that. HIts like that used to be straight up charging but over the years it's become more acceptable as long as the skates are on the ice at contact. But he's leaping into the guy as he hits him, which is against the spirit of the charging rule. To put it another way, I'd be pissed if someone hit one of our players exploding up like that, even if the skates were on or only a little off the ice at contact. Don't get me wrong, it's a great video. I just know Kronner can still crush people without the jumping part.

Nash injured his back last season and missed games because of it, but at the time I remember hearing it was not the first time he's had that same back problem. Just that when it flared up previously it wasn't bad enough for him to miss games. I didn't say he had missed a bunch of games or he was totally damaged goods, but to me it does raise a little concern when you're talking about a big contract with 8 years left on it.

I could see the Kings taking a serious look, for the reasons you mention, plus their massive problems scoring goals. Even trading Johnson though, I'm not sure they could fit Nash in under the cap. Hmm. though I guess Penner is a UFA the end of this season (good riddance).
-
He's definitely not old, but picking up Shanny was in the pre-cap era. If Holland were to bring on Nash he'd have $21 million tied up in 3 forwards for two seasons, then have to re-sign Datsyuk with Z and Nash still accounting for over $14 mill a year thru 2020. And somewhere in there he's got to try and fill the massive hole in the blueline when Lidstrom retires. Another issue is that though he's young, Nash seems to have chronic back problems. Never say never but I'd be surprised if Kenny made such a radical move like that.

6 more years at a $7.8 mill cap hit on top of what they'd have to give up to get him... No way the Wings are pursuing this. The real question is if Columbus trades away Nash, what the hell happens to that franchise?

I hope Ericsson puts Eriksson through the glass.

It's a good question. Honestly I think there's a fair number of Kronwall's hits that are borderline because of how he launches himself. Looking at this one comparing to Rinaldo's, I'd say Kronner's skates don't get nearly as high off the ice, and because he's coming in backwards he actually isn't launching himself like he often does. His left skate looks like it's basically on the ice through most of the hit. With Rinaldo's hit I'd have to think it was the long run-up combined with the jump as he stopped. Like I said I'm a little surprised at the suspension but the guy was just fined for a late hit and a slewfoot very recently. Shanny may just be sick of seeing his name come across his desk.
-
I'm a little surprised honestly, though I'm guessing the suspension is in great part to Rinaldo being fined recently for a slew foot and a late hit in the same game. In watching the video a few times, it looks like Rinaldo ends up leaving his feet in part because he put on the brakes before he hit E. Probably because he knew he didn't want to hit the boards at that speed. Though even had he not gone flying into the air, Rinaldo has Ericsson lined up from the blueline and takes at least 6 full strides to hit him.

Is Nicklas Lidstrom The Greatest Detroit Red Wing Of All Time?
haroldsnepsts replied to up2here's topic in General
It depends on what kind of success you're talking about. If it's overall financial success of the franchise, certainly Yzerman and probably Howe would be ahead of Lids. that's not a knock on Lidstrom, but for his career with the Wings there have always been other star players there helping to support him. Yzerman, Fedorov, Zetterberg, Datsyuk. In the mid 80s, Yzerman was pretty much the only hope and only reason to watch the Red Wings. -

Stay on topic please. Stating an unpopular opinion does not make you an illegitimate member here. And honestly the post that started this bickering is that McCarty and Draper shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Lidstrom, which is pretty accurate when you're discussing their place in the history of the game. -
I'd say both. There's going to be times when he'll have to play the puck, but he needs to practice that. Like I said during the game, anytime you see a goalie try an awkward backhand type shot, it's bad news. In general though he could be more conservative in playing the puck since he's so awful at it.

As long as it's Volvo and not Ikea. Otherwise you'd have to put him together with that one tiny friggin allen wrench.

Is Nicklas Lidstrom The Greatest Detroit Red Wing Of All Time?
haroldsnepsts replied to up2here's topic in General
Definitely not anymore. The only reason Bourque is still in the discussion as to being ahead of Lidstrom is because he is a good Canadian boy who played a more physical game than Nick. If Lids was canadian the only real discussion would be if he's 2nd or 3rd behind Harvey. Once he's retired a few years and people take a more objective look at all he accomplished in his career, there's really little question he deserves to be ahead of Bourque. More on topic, I can't really say if he's the greatest Red Wing of all time. It's basically Lidstrom, Howe and Yzerman. You could make a strong case for any of them depending on what criteria you use. -
Left his feet and contacted the head. I'm not surprised he's having to talk with Shanny. I don't know that it warrants a suspension, but it seems like every time I hear this guys name its for some dumbass move. Didn't he just slewfoot someone a few games ago?

it's called dump and chase guys. When there's 4 players standing on the blueline. shoot it in and go get it.
-
hee hee. It's fun seeing Talbot pissed off like that.

Z!

Great save by Joey. Wings losing all sorts of puck battles here.
-
Crap. Miller did a nice job stopping the puck but then seemed handcuffed and gave it right back to them. Dats of all people not having very good position on Hartnell.
-
Franzen was at the end of his shift and you could tell he pretty much quit even though he was in the offensive zone with the puck on his stick. Fires a good shot, but doesn't do anything but stand there until it's safe to turn and skate to the bench.
-
Crap. Miller hit the post. Great work by Helm.

To me he's just a dirty player. Seems like every game I see him in there's a spear, slash, gloved punch or some other cheapshot, usually after the play. But he's also been dinged by the league a few times too. 2010/11/01 Suspended by the NHL for three games. 2009/11/24 Suspended by the NHL for 2 games. 2006/03/30 Suspended by the NHL for two games.
