that's the craziest part to me. I'm not in Detroit so maybe it's being discussed in local coverage, but from what I've seen no one is even asking the obvious question about Weiss. I rewatched the play because I had mistakenly blamed Franzen for the pass (one less thing to be mad at him for I guess). Franzen had actually backed out of the zone once Kronwall lost possession of the puck. I can't blame him for that because it's an empty net and he's got the Canucks moving his way. Kronwall manages to recover the puck but then throws it to the point without looking to see Franzen was no longer there. On a power play I could see the point man staying in the zone, but not so much when it's an empty net and it's a forward covering the point. But the Canucks didn't actually score on that play. The Wings regained possession and brought it back into the offensive zone. They had the Canucks outnumbered along the boards but Nyquist loses the puck and both Sedins come charging up ice, Weiss doesn't do a very good job pressuring Daniel, who makes a nice pass to Henrik, who takes a shot from his own blueline and scores. It was a nice play by the Sedins. I don't quite understand how they Wings lost possession in the corner that quickly given they had Nyquist, Weiss and I think Sheahan all there against two Canucks.

Wings did carry the play for a lot of the game. Miller robbed them of several chances that looked like sure goals. Howard played well too. He stopped a couple breakaways and other great chances. Sheahan looked great, per usual. Nyquist got moved up with him and Tatar. Weiss remains glued to the bench. The defenseman fired multiple shots from the point into opponents' shin pads. Franzen remains invisible. The refs were calling pretty soft penalties both ways. Kassian had one of the dives of the year, but naturally they still gave Franzen 2 minutes for tripping in spite of the dive. Canucks capitalized on their power plays, the Wings did not. Really the biggest difference was Miller.

There were line changes tonight. Jurco got bumped down and Nyquist played with Sheahan and Tatar. Just no change with Weiss. He played less than 9 minutes and 3 of that was PP time. It's gotten so bad it would be good to hear some explanation as to why Babcock has glued his ass to the bench. The commentators don't even seem to talk about it or speculate on it.

Wings almost score there. good things happen when a shot actually gets through from the point.
-
******* franzen. take a look before you pass the puck off because you don't feel like making a play.
-
That was not on Howard. He did a pad stack because Vrbata walked out front and had all sorts of time. Jimmy's made several huge saves tonight including a couple breakaways.
-
Franzen still hasn't registered a shot on goal. The high glass has made some nice saves on him tonight though.
-
Canucks collapsed against the Kings last game. Maybe they'll do it again.
-
Miller is stealing this one so far to try and get a SHUTOUT.

"Shot from the point gets blocked by (insert opposing team's player here)."
-
Franzen-Helm-Jurco I thought so but Nyquist did get bumped up.
-
I was getting annoyed at him constantly throwing it back to Kronwall at the point when Franzen had room to work to make a play.
-
That's a pretty soft call to put a team on a 5 on 3, but I'll take it. Jimmy stalling to try and buy time for the first unit.
-
Huge save by Howard on H. Sedin there.
-
Great work by Nyquist. That was probably a goal saving hook by the Canucks player there. Holy cow. I thought Datsyuk had one there for sure.
-
How does Z's pass go through three Red Wings in their own zone? It's like no one wants the puck tonight.
-
ok zebras, let's see some makeup calls here in the third. I agree about Nyquist. Helm isn't exactly a playmaker and Franzen is in float mode, so Nyquist doesn't have a lot to work with.
-
I think Dats and Z have been together most if not all of the night, haven't they? When they're together, they like having Abby as the net front/puck retrieval guy, which I don't really have a problem with. He's been very good in that role this year. I'm not sure why Nyquist isn't seeing more ice time tonight though.

I don't quite know what's going on with Weiss, but I absolutely think Franzen should be on the bench. It's been a long time coming. There's no way a 6'4" 230 lbs forward with the ability of Franzen should be so invisible out there game after game. Mule has something like 2 goals in his last 20 games.
-
It's the first time he's been a factor all game. He, Nyquist and Weiss are spending a lot of time on the bench.
-
Man is Sheahan impressive. I notice him every game, in a good way.
-
Of course I jinxed XO as he gets a shot blocked.
-
Very quick whistle. Nice redirect by Dats.
-
After watching other teams around the league, it's painfully apparent how desperately the Wings need a D-man who can get a shot through traffic from the point. So far this game the best one at it has been XO.

It'd be nice if the ref called the dive too, but ain't gonna happen. Are they playing this game at a library or something? I think I just heard the guy in section 103 Row 4 seat 3 try so squeak out a fart.
