That's a pretty soft call on Ericsson too. Refs apparently think so too so they're getting involved. Every penalty this game has been pretty weak.
-
Z gets a penalty because his stick broke and the Canucks score. The slash to the stick sure didn't look like much. Good saves by Jimmy on these breakaways.
-
It may have been called anyway but that was definitely embellishment by Tatar on the interference. There's been a few dives I've seen recently by the Wings. Not liking this trend.

Nhlnumbers.com is the only other site I've heard of. I don't know how good or accurate they are though. I've always used capgeek. http://stats.nhlnumbers.com/teams/DET?year=2015

It's a poorly worded statement in the article. The Wings have a "league leading" 47.23 shot attempts per 60 minutes, meaning they allow the fewest shot attempts per 60 minutes in the league, not the most. http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/teamstats.php?disp=1&db=201415&sit=5v5&sort=CA60&sortdir=ASC

Perron scores 10 minutes into his first game with the Pens, on a nice pass from Crosby. http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/672338

As I said in my post, sometimes they could take a ratings hit but still have the win of exposing a smaller market team. I'm really not even sure what you're arguing here.
-
Agreed. Too many games, too many of the same teams. Sometimes I think they're gonna have to take a hit on ratings by featuring a smaller hockey market, but they could still highlight a relatively lesser exposed team by using the Winter Classic. But yeah, they've taken an event and turned it into another outdoor game. The article and his post refers to ratings, not attendance.

Agreed. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with our blueline. If you look at who gets the fewest offensive zone starts on the team, it's Miller, Andersson and Glendening by a country mile. Even trustworthy guys like Zetterberg and Datsyuk start in the offensive zone 60% of the time. Kindl and Lashoff, unsurprisingly start in the offensive zone 70% of the time.

I don't have a problem with the newer analytics themselves (admittedly I'm still sorting out what all the stats measure). The problem I have is how routinely they're misused and misinterpreted, including this article. They call Sheahan Detroit's best shot suppressor, then point out he starts more than 62% of his shifts in the offensive zone. So in one sentence they've drawn a faulty conclusion from the statistics and even included the reason why they're wrong. Very likely Sheahan isn't Detroit's best shot suppressor. When you start the vast majority of your shifts in the offensive zone, that means your opponent has to go a long way to register a shot attempt. Glendening on the other hand, starts in the offensive zone less than 33% of the time. Two-thirds of his shifts, he's starting in front of his own net, so there's going to be a lot more shot attempts from his opponent. Then in subtler ways, they often use language that draws conclusions not supported by the stats. It's not that Sheahan himself only "allows" 37.7 shot attempts per 60 minutes of play. It means that when Sheahan is on the ice, the other team only gets 37.7 shot attempts per 60 minutes of play. That's it. But people constantly make the logical leap that the statistic says something specifically that a player is doing on the ice. That's a HUGE difference.

It would be. You don't see that kind of wisdom from most young players these days.
-
If it makes you feel better, Stamkos is only 2 years older than Pulkkinen. Stamkos started so young he's been in the league 6 years, but still, saying you grew up watching him is a bit of a stretch.

Thankfully, no. That should be XO paired with Smith.

Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive 5m 5 minutes ago Kindl has been placed on short term IR (7 days) with sprained elbow. They'll probably recall Ouellet.

Glendening took 17 faceoffs tonight, second only to Datsyuk who had 24*. Datsyuk was a respectable 50%, Glendening won 70% of his faceoffs. He won 12 and lost 5*. Glendening only gets offensive zone starts 34% of the time*. That's the least amount of any regular player on the team. So it seems like he's Babcock's guy after Dats to win key faceoffs and maintain possession of the puck, particularly in his own end. *I've been drinking so I can't be sure these stats are 100% correct

On a team with a tremendous defensive corps maybe. But honestly I think he'd be fine in more of a 2nd pairing role. The blueline is thin on talent so everyone not named Kronwall is playing a little over their heads.
-
Agreed. Mule has 1 goal in the month of December. And of his 7 goals, 4 were on the PP. He's on pace to score 18 goals this season.

Wings give up 45 SOG.

Crap.

Howard on the bench.

Did Datsyuk just dive? I'm hoping that crosscheck caught him off guard. But he seemed to go down easy for a guy so strong on his skates.
-
Quincey seems to be throwing off whoever he's paired with out there. He and DK got pinned in a little bit ago, then he just crossed up Smith on what should've been a routine play.
-
good lord, how many crosschecks has Abby received in front of the Bruins net tonight?
-
It's definitely some old school hockey out there. Hooking, holding the guy stick. Good on Sheahan for his work against Chara at the end of the period. If the Wings hadn't just gotten a powerplay, they probably would've gotten a call there.

Kelly was legitimately hooking Nyquist between the legs, but Nyquist dove.
