    Goal Similarities

Nice! Clearly a set play for 4 on 3. Even the same players. You can see in last night's Lids holds the puck until Kronwall gets set up to follow him. It's definitely a go for broke move though, because if Kronwall's shot doesn't get through, he's the only guy with any chance of getting back.

    Jiri Hudler Watch Thread

Hopefully this will give Hudler something to build on. With Dats and Cleary out, we need him to get going now more than ever.
  3. By its name it sounds like it somehow indicates how clutch a guy is, but it's a completely useless stat. If it's tied 2-2 and Zetterberg scores with a couple seconds left to win the game, then that's a clutch goal. But the score could just as easily be 5-0 in the first period, with Mule having the game winner since he scored the first goal. Then the Wings get sloppy late in the third and the opponent scores a meaningless goal to make it 5-1. Zetterberg had the second goal, which means he now gets the game winning goal. Clutch? Not exactly. It's useless.

    Congratulations Chris Osgood!

Luckily this isn't a thread about your faith in Ozzy. So why not celebrate his 400th win or get the f*** out of it? jesus, is it that hard not to be an ******* in a thread where people are celebrating a career milestone?

Bert was a turnover machine on that powerplay. Lucky he didn't get called for hooking on the breakaway. Nice pokecheck by Ozzy.

    Forsberg's last comeback attempt

I guess all those years of diving really took a toll on his feet. Sad, sad story.

    Jordin Tootoo in rehab

I hate the little bastard on the ice. He's a dirty player and a blemish on the league. I don't wish ill will upon him personally, but honestly he will not be missed by me during his time in rehab. Ideally he'd get clean and hang up the skates. He's part Inuit, isn't he? I'm guessing he has a genetic and cultural tendency towards substance abuse.

Cleary out 4 weeks w/fractured ankle

Good point. It's one that all of us here (some more than others) could use reminding of. If it's not fun to watch, why do it?

Avs are the highest scoring team in the NHL. Let's hope the Wings remember how to play some defense tonight so Ozzy can get this 400 thing over with once and for all.

Cleary out 4 weeks w/fractured ankle

Crap. This not only sucks for the team. I feel bad for Cleary. He was playing so well finally being healthy.

So who remembers the 85-86 season?

My worst memory of Murphy was that we traded away Graves along with him. I was always a fan of Graves.

How do you think the Wings will do without Dats?

Like I had said earlier, I think because Dats has the crazy moves, he gets more attention and it seems like his production is better. Honestly they've been nearly identical the last couple seasons. People were giving Z grief towards the end of last regular season when he had the same number of points as Datsyuk, and in fewer games. He just doesn't look as impressive our there I guess, so doesn't get credit for production. Or maybe it's a holdover from the 09 season when Dats had great numbers and Z was average? I'm honestly not sure.

    Call up Ilari Filppula?

Call up Ilari Filppula to replace Datsyuk? Seems more likely the Wings will give added icetime and responsibility to his younger brother, who's shown he can play at the NHL level for 4 seasons now.

    Frederick Meyer levels Milan Lucic

Actually I don't. I think it's pretty lame actually. I like Boston, but that wasn't a dirty hit, and Lucic is a big boy. The team doesn't need to start jumping guys any time he gets hit like he's some delicate flower.

ooooh a stat checker. Talk to me when you've watched a few games. Ozzy's been fine, and arguably as good as Howard has lately. The Wings need to work on team defense.

Tim Thomas GAA 1.67 Sv % .949 Height: 5'11" Weight: 182 lbs. Jonas Gustavsson GAA 3.10 Sv % .894 Height 6' 3" Weight: 192 lbs. It's almost as if there's other factors than size when it comes to goaltending.

    Jiri Hudler Watch Thread

Every time I read the thread title "Jiri Hudler watch" it doesn't make me think of tracking his performance, but more like birdwatching. Having to sit still for hours on end, intensely focused, hoping you catch a brief glimpse of him doing something good.

How do you think the Wings will do without Dats?

Right now the Wings are doing okay with offense, but if they can't get their defense locked down, then they're really going to miss Dats even more. The Wings are 15th overall in goals against and 14th in PK. Not terrible, but needs to improve if they want to stay near the top of the league. And I'm guessing that stat is moving in the wrong direction. They've given up 4 goals in each of their last 4 games. It's obviously hard to win that way. If they get back to team defense and get some solid goaltending, they'll be fine. It's weird how Z gets less credit than Dats because it doesn't "look" like he's playing well out there. But after last nights game he has one less assist and the same number of goals. No one is going to look as impressive as Datsyuk on the ice. He can make three guys look stupid, but it may not lead to any points. Based on that, I think it feels like Dats has a lot more points than Zetterberg, but their stats are nearly identical. Zetterberg's goals tend to be ugly gritty goals, but they still win games.

    Should Valtteri Filppula be traded?

Looks like this thread was bumped because of Datsyuk's injury, not because of the loss (the thread was created in Feb of this year). With Datsyuk down, it's not a stretch to say that it's a great time for Flip to elevate his game.

    Frederick Meyer levels Milan Lucic

A little high maybe, though I'd call it clean. But you'd think Meyer had pulled a Claude Lemieux based on Boston's reaction. Ridiculous.

    Should Valtteri Filppula be traded?

Out of curiousity, how good are hockey's futures assessments? I don't spend much time there so I don't have a great feel for the quality of the site. I will say though that over on hfboards I've seen a handful of posters who apparently are hockeysfuture staff, and they're among the biggest idiots there.

You're wrong. Ozzy was terrible last season, but much to your disappointment I'm sure, he's been good this season. He has not looked the same as last year at all.

12/23 GDT: Red Wings 3 at Blues 4

Agreed. When you give up four goals, the problem is bigger than losing Datsyuk.

So who remembers the 85-86 season?

I had started following the Wings a season or two before. Those were the days of the Snore-is (Norris) division. Just about everyone made the playoffs, and the Wings still managed not to. Kinda painful because they lost so many games, but they did have a lot of fun players to watch. Yzerman, Gallant, Probert, Kocur, Oates, O'Connell, Burr, and of course, Harold Snepsts. The upside was my buddy's dad used to get free tickets through work all the time and we could move our way up to great seats no problem. It felt like I went to almost every home game those few seasons. We got to know the equipment manager (Dominic Mara, I think??) so he'd look for us when giving away broken sticks and pucks and whatnot. Overall I have fond memories of the Dead Things era. The next season when the Wings made the playoffs and came back from 3 games to 1 to take the 7 game series against bitter rival Toronto, it felt practically like they won the Cup.

Thanks Lou! And man, I'm gonna have to criticize Zetterberg's offensive game more often. Who knew he was so sensitive?
