I'd be more okay with the lack of production if they weren't so awful around their own net. Modano definitely needs to shoot more, but I don't completely agree that he's not at least part of the problem. Both he and Hudler have looked like they didn't have their man around the Wings goal and seconds later the pucks in the back of our net. Last night it was Hudler on the first goal, and Modano on the second goal. They've both been weak defensively and it shows.

Honestly if I weren't a Wings fan I would hate the team for all those reasons but number 5. Hockeytown is a little obnoxious, especially trademarking it, and not that accurate. Detroit is hockeytown so long as the Wings are winning and Cup contenders. The real test is when they're mediocre or bad. This is footballtown if anything, because for whatever reason, we still want to watch the Lions break our hearts season after season. The Joe- I wouldn't hate a team for their arena, and I have fond memories of the Joe. But even in the mid to late 80s, that place was outdated. Chelios - I hated Cheli before he was a Wing, and for all the s*** people give Crosby for skipping the line, I can totally get being ticked at Chelios for doing it (though I didn't realize he skipped twice?) 2002 - The least exciting of all Cups to me, because they were such a stacked team. Winning a Cup is still pretty awesome, but I definitely would've hated the Wings for buying an all star team like that. EDIT: though it is pretty funny that the reporter forgot Hasek when listing the HOF'ers on the 2002 team. Still, it listed 5 great reasons to love the team. Better than I would've expected from an OC paper.

don't get my hopes up. like I said in another thread. Lids potentially retiring, Vokoun a UFA. Hmmm..... oh, that made me think of Hextall! It's not so much I wanted him on the Wings at any specific time, but I always loved that crazy bastard. Especially when he jumped Chelios for elbowing Propp.

Lame that the guy is suing, but Rypien deserves a suspension. The league is still trying to establish itself as a major pro sport. Crap like this makes it look like professional wrestling.

I watch a fair amount of Kings games, and man, Doughty is awesome. Vokoun and Selanne are a couple others. Selanne is a little long in the tooth now, but still, all the guy does is put up points. And Vokoun is a great goaltender who is underrated due to playing in markets like Nashville and Florida. Madden is another guy I would've liked on the Wings in his younger days. Sean O'Donnell too.

They did. They got moved to seats along the glass.

It's not the greatest clip. At the start you can just barely catch Rypien suckerpunching Staubitz around the ref. Then it cuts to him going after the fan as he's leaving the rink. Here's a better one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubhyzQJnYUU

6 goals on 18 shots by Luongo. Louuuuuu...... Unbelievably stupid play by Ripien. First the cheapshot around the ref, then going after a fan who was standing there clapping.

Lilja was not worse than Lebda. Lilja blocked shots, was useful on the pk, and was somewhat physical. Lebda was none of those things. Lilja was also better defensively overall. Which is part of why Lilja got paid more and played more.
-
. . . . . wait for it... . . . . . . . . late.
-
He managed a goaltender interference penalty in OT? As a defenseman? I was never a Lebda fan, but I wouldn't have even expected this level of crapiness from him.
-
*showing you the door* Steve Ott? Really? Man I hate that guy. And this is from someone who wants Pronger on the team.
-
Agreed. His one goal was ridiculous. Hossa carried the puck into the zone and made a nice play that led to a great scoring chance, then Kopecky comes skating wobbly kneed towards the crease and knocks home the rebound into the wide open net. Seriously, I don't know what he did to deserve it, but the hockey gods smile down upon him.

Because the Ducks tend to goon it up, that somehow affects this kind of hit? It was definitely late, the puck was up past Selanne at that time the hit was made. It was east west, and looked like it contacted the head. That seems predatory to me. about half the time I think Doan plays a hard nosed game that I like, but then the other half I think he's a total d-bag. This is definitely the latter.

Selanne is definitely nother guy I've wished for a while that would end up on the Wings...
-
Not really. But that's hardly a knock on Kindl. so far he's been shaky at times, but overall good for a rookie defenseman transitioning to the NHL.
-
Siberia? You do know he's Swedish and not Russian, right? Honestly the OC or Sweden, it's a tough call. It's a little painful to see Lillypads in the Ducks sweater, but he'll likely improve their blueline.

If it's supposed to be our enforcer, then yes, it sucks. If it's just supposed to be the PP, then it's ok, and hopefully will get better. as was mentioned, Raf's absence definitely hurts it. And it'll probably take a bit for Modano to get in sync.
-
Agreed. I think Salei will be fine if he stays healthy. He is adjusting to a new system. Kindl makes some bad mistakes, but he is a rookie. Hopefully he'll continue to improve. As for E, having back problems certainly isn't going to help his progress. Janik is fine for a plug, but he makes mistakes and has limitations that show why he's not a regular in the lineup.
-
The Wings had a short bench though. It makes sense to slow the game down. Last season Howard wasn't quite in sync with his teammates as to when and where to put the puck back in play. A defensive zone faceoff may not be that much more dangerous in certain situations.
-
Using that name should be a suspendable offense. Not because it's wrong to criticize Osgood, but just because it's so obvious and stupid. Even when bashing players, LGW sets the bar higher than that.
-
Hudler, hmm... name sounds familiar but not quite ringing a bell. Oh, is he the guy who took the bad tripping penalty in the offensive zone?
-
Vokoun is a UFA at the end of the season, when Lidstrom may also retire. Just sayin...
-
Ah, there's the mindfly we all know. No more positivity with the minuses gone. Should be an interesting one with the Wings short bench. Sometimes teams rally around things like this.
