He won't. See the post above yours. It's practically unheard of. I'm not a fan of the cap, but if you're going to have one, have one. Otherwise get rid of it altogether. This is a ridiculous loophole they left open.
-
Actually, pretty much. yeah. Z is the best shutdown center on the Wings and easily one of the best in the league. Seems like that should be Selke worthy.
-
Because they signed him until he's 44 years old. I wonder what percentage of player in this league actually play until they're that age? The Zetterberg contract is a stretch for sure, Hossa's is pretty clear cap circumvention, but this is friggin ridiculous. 44 years old?? Why didn't they just go for it? They really could've brought his cap hit down for paying him a dollar when he turns 50.
-
Ah. You're right. I was thinking he's always been just outside the top three.
-
Him not even having a Selke nomination is pretty ridiculous when you consider what he's done to the opposing team's star players time and time again.

Man, Petr Klima, John Chabot, Gallant, Dave Barr, Oates... that brings back some memories. So weird to see Gallant with the C on his sweater. This must be the year Stevie was out with the bad knee after sliding into the goalpost. You still have to wonder how much better his career would've been had the net come off its moorings properly when he slid into it. That's great stuff. Can't wait to see the other videos.

While true, there's also that for many of those who jump to the KHL, they're playing in their native country, closer to their family.

Ovechkin takes advisor position with Unified Hockey Club Dynamo

I think how this differs from what Maltby, Draper or Datsyuk are doing is that Ovechkin is being paid as a consultant in another hockey league. To me that's where it crosses the line. Especially if he's helping the KHL understand exactly what works well about the NHL. The league can't really control what players do in their free time, but it's within reason for them to restrict their employees from working for another professional hockey leagues. If you work for Little Caesar's, I think it's reasonable for them to restrict you from being paid as a consultant at an old Domino's franchise where you used to work. And aside from the NHL's perspective on this, it's ill-timed by Ovechkin. His team just surpassed the Sharks as biggest postseason washouts, and he's choosing now to spending time helping an old team in a rival league? All of his professional hockey energy should be going towards figuring out how to keep the Caps from repeating what happened this last playoffs. -
Great post. I've always liked Vokoun and thought he was a very good goaltender. I couldn't believe the Preds picked Mason over him pretty much based on 40 games performance. It's unfortunate that Vokoun has remained somewhat in the shadows because of the less than stellar teams he plays for. Maybe the fans in Florida should start yelling "Vooooouuuuuu!" anytime he makes a routine save.

Yeah, i'm not sure Ozzy is a lock to have his number raised to the rafters. The Wings use a high standard compared to some other clubs in the league. Honestly though, after Lidstrom he's probably the next most likely guy. Z and Dats are certainly candidates, but it's too early to say yet. When it comes to jersey retirement or the HOF, the knock against Ozzy is always the same. He's been very good for a long time, which is quite an accomplishment when you think of all the goalies who looked promising and disappeared in this league. He's been very good on a team that's been very good, but he's never been elite. And as for Eva's Dino-Ozzy comparison, unfortunately he's using logic where there often isn't any. The Hall has always had varying standards, and it's not apples to apples. They hold a different standard for goalies than players.

Whatever the salary is, I'd be upset about this if I were the NHL brass. I can understand wanting to help an old team, but the reality is he paid by the NHL to play and promote in that league. He's one of its biggest stars. It's really obnoxious and inappropriate to take a paid position helping a team in another league. Honestly I'm surprised it's not specifically prevented in his contract. You'd think trying to figure out how the Caps can keep from massively failing in the playoffs would be enough to fill his time. I've been a big AO fan, but my respect for him has definitely gone down the last couple seasons as I grow weary of his antics. -
Pretty funny that he makes twice as much as he did in the pre-cap days. Think the owners are happy he broke the players union?
-
I guess I can understand why Modano might want to do this. I just don't see why the Ducks would.
-
That sentence coming from you is pretty ******* hilarious.

And Kronwall Ericsson on the bottom pairing? Honestly given the season that E had, and Kronwall not really looking great either, I dont' know if that would work out or be a disaster. Meech has shown nothing to warrant top 4 ice time, but I guess could be given the opportunity because of the Wings current D situtation. I wouldn't mind seeing what Kindl could do given an experienced partner like Stuart. EDIT: or were you saying make Stuart the bottom pairing and Kronwall-E 3-4? I thought he made 850k last season? Either way, it's a bad deal.
-
For me it's not so much about bashing Lebda, but the disbelief that Toronto would give him a 600k raise. I was never a Lebda fan, but now our bottom pairing is an even bigger unknown.
-
or the size of his contract.
-
Because the owners are doing charity work? Hockey players are entertainers. They're only getting paid that much because some idiot GM agreed to it.
-
I can never tell if you're joking when it comes to Lillypads and fighting, because you seem reasonable about fights otherwise. Lilja has never owned anyone. He got in a good punch against Boll and then took him down. As I've said before, I give Lilja major props for basically learning to fight at the top level of the sport. But he certainly wasn't tremendous at it.
-
Yup. This is a good example of the salary cap leading to less talent in the NHL. Hopefully it will remain a rare case. EDIT: and off topic, who's the idiot who keeps rating all the threads one star?
-
So long Lebda! Hello.... E and Meech??! aww, crap.
-
Honestly because our defense right now is: Lidstrom - still great but not getting any younger or faster Rafalksi - very good but has his brain fart moments. Stuart - stepped up in a major way in the first half of last season but hit the wall in the 2nd half Kronwall - injury prone, didn't look himself last season Ericsson - took two GIANT steps backwards in development last season and.. Meech?? It's hard for me to care much about signing Modano because it's hardly the Wing's most pressing need. I know Holland said something to the effect of picking up a bottom pairing guy. But who? when? Imagine this season if one of our top four D-men goes down. Or two?? This is another good point. I'd rather take a chance on a young guy and hope he steps up than take a chance on an old one that we hope has gas left in the tank. I would've loved to have Modano on the Wings, but several years ago. Not so much now.
