You are assuming he expected them to make the financial transactions themselves, versus them being the ones to go out and find financial advisors to handle his money. He was a 25 year old who just signed a contract for 30 million dollars, which isn't quite the same situation as having your parents on your checking account. It's a tremendous amount of money and people start coming out of the woodwork to get a piece of it. So he put it in the hands of people he trusted while he went out and earned it. I'd venture to guess he's not the only pro athlete who's done this and most of the time it works out. I'm not sure why that's so hard for you to pick up on.
-
It's not like he gave the money to his mom and said "go play the stock market." According to one source she did things like bought a house in Manhattan beach with his money, then lied to him saying they paid for it with a relative's inheritance. So it's not just about ignorance of handling money and more about his parents completely taking advantage of him and not looking out for his best interests. Obviously in hindsight he should've found a financial adviser, but I can imagine being 25 years old, who just signed this giant contract. There's people all around you licking their chops to get at that money and take advantage of you, so who do you trust? You just don't expect it to be your parents.

Agreed. When I first saw the headline I thought "what a moron." But reading more about it and hearing what his parents did puts it in a whole different light for me. I guess you can blame him for being naive and not picking up on the problem earlier, but it's his friggin parents. The guy is likely busy playing hockey and trusting that his mother will be handling things and looking out for his best interests. Not having an agent didn't help. Agents are often evil, but a necessary one in the entertainment business.

For those of us who didn't catch the game. Not much of a fight but you can see Smith holding his hand immediately afterwards.
-
True. I guess I'm just surprised an infection would show up that fast. And really the crack about the trainers is more about the groin injuries that this team seems particularly susceptible to.
-
Agreed, but you'd think they would've cleaned it and covered it after the fight. It seems a little odd an infection shows up that fast. I'm really starting to wonder about the Wings training staff.

Why? Chelios is in the HHOF and he's at least as dirty of a player as Pronger was. I hated him with a passion when he played against Detroit, but Pronger was a great defenseman. Plus you gotta admit, it'd be pretty hilarious if Pronger was working for the NHL in Player Safety, a HHOF member, AND still technically a player for the Flyers.

A Pearson and a couple Selke's too.

Khan tweeted a couple times saying it was the groin injury again.

The thread topic is about Fedorov or Forsberg. Let's all get back on topic.

If it is effective at deterring guys from taking runs at star players, that means it is also effective at reducing hitting in the game.
-
Agreed. There was a time when players accepted that hockey is a tough sport and they might have a teammate get caught with a clean hard hit. They'd just take a number and get that guy back. Or the hitting in the game overall would increase. There were always the few star players who were protected, like Gretzky and Yzerman, but there wasn't all this fighting after clean hard hits. The point is to separate the guy from the puck and take advantage of that. By dropping the gloves immediately the team often negates that advantage. The player starting a fight after a hit like that should always get an extra 2 and maybe even a 10 minute misconduct. Especially considering it's often more of a mugging than a fight. For as much as people complain about the league taking hitting out of the game, players fighting after clean hits tries to do the same thing. Hitting is part of the game. Take a number and play on. To be clear, I'm not talking about the Wing's habit of standing around when one of their players has obviously been cheapshotted.

Sounds like it might be the doghouse after all? -

Agreed. I just hadn't heard anything about an injury. Or even mention of an injury. I didn't catch the game though so maybe they addressed it there. They must've noticed he wasn't on the ice for a long time. -

That's what I wondered. Is Kindl hurt? Or his he deep in Babcock's doghouse again? -
Franzen has as many or more cheapshots and suckerpunches than Subban. I guess he's a rat too.

Crap. If Bettman says ads on jerseys aren't happening soon that means ads on jerseys are probably happening soon. http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/630284

Cocky attitude how? What has he done that's like the NBA or NFL? As others have pointed out he's generally very well spoken, humble, and has handled some touchy situations with surprising maturity and grace. Meanwhile the other guy has threatened to kill a player in the handshake line and speared multiple players in the nuts. So....
-
Good question. My biggest criticism of Subban would be the diving, which seems to have improved over the years. But there also seems to be a culture of it on the Habs.
-
No doubt he's a talented player. One of the few true power forwards left in the game. Just saying that if we're gonna call one of those two a rat, I'm going with the guy who's run goalies, suckerpunched guys, has repeatedly speared players in the nuts (usually because they gave him a clean hard hit and he couldn't take it), been suspended multiple times, and throws tantrums in the handshake line instead of manning up.
-
You've got that flipped. Between those two Looooch is the raaaaaat by a country mile.

Las Vegas rumored to get an expansion team

This is moving awfully fast for something that wasn't even a possibility two weeks ago. It's almost as if they've been working on this for years and continually lying to the press and fans. The NHL has settled on owners for the new franchise: Think they really haven't settled on a second city already? http://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/628887 -
His wiki page makes it sound like Nill was a big factor in the Wings picking him (while also mentioning his small stature).

Henrik Zetterberg. http://redwings.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=691018 And I seem to remember a discussion a while back where they said all Finnish players too, because of the mandatory military service. Not sure about North American players.
