umm, where did the defenseman go on that one?
  2. There aren't a lot of guys like Gallant anymore. in '89 he had 93 points (39 G 54 A) and 230 PIMs. I'd also argue that May isn't just on the team to fight. Downey was here only to fight because he couldn't do much else. May is long in the tooth, which limits his abilities for sure, but the 4th line has looked great so far this year when he's out there and doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing.
  3. Another fantastic post. Way to elevate the level of discussion here.
  4. Ahh, I see the debate team is here. in almost any thread where someone talks about a guy like May/Downey/(insert fighter here), there's the responses to the effect of "they're not gonna trash their teammates in public" to discount what the players or saying, or random injury examples to prove the enforcer didn't prevent them, therefore they're useless. My point is that in spite of them not preventing Franzen from blowing out his knee and Flip breaking his wrist, the players have said time and time again how they like having someone out there to look out for them. It's not about preventing injuries, or even fighting for fighting's sake. It's about having guys to do the fighting when things get chippy, because it may not prevent injuries, but it does keep players a lot more honest. Someone had pointed out how when May crashes the net, there's rarely all the facewashing that goes on like when another player on the Wings does it. I wonder why that is? The reality is, and the players have said this, they play a little bigger when you know someone has got your back. Edited for clarity.

Scouting the league-- who can replace Lilja?

The Kings picked up Randy Jones off re-entry waivers.
  6. Someone else had raised that point in another thread, and I'm fairly sure that the puck was in Howard's glove when play was stopped.

Ericcson Likely Out Tonight With Flu-Like Symptoms

uh, does that mean a Lebda-Meech bottom pairing?? I really hope Babcock will at least split those two up.
  8. I don't really understand why it's so hard for some people to believe that even "classy" guys like Zetterberg and Lidstrom like having a teammate who will beat the snot out of an opponent that pulls cheap crap after the whistle or takes liberties with them.

    Filppula out 6-8 Weeks

holy crap. Flip didn't exactly have a scoring touch, but he was looking more aggressive this year than ever before. I was hoping he'd start shooting the puck more and finding the back of the net.

    What happened to the glamour?

The fact that you can use "glamour" to describe the shootout is a good example of why I don't like as a part of hockey.

10/29 GDT: Red Wings 5 at Oilers 6, (SO)

Well, at least Detroit got a point with the comeback. Would've been nice to steal two, especially since the Oilers didn't deserve two for giving up a lead like that.

Which is the good news and bad news.

That's good news. Hopefully Jimmy will get in the groove, and Ozzy will do whatever the hell it is he needs to do to learn to play goal again. I don't get how he can be so good in the playoffs, but pretty awful the regular season before it and after it.

Zetterberg had 8 shots on goal tonight and Bertuzzi had 6, and a fair number were great scoring chances. Great to see Datsyuk going. It seems like it's only a matter of time before Z and Bert kick in. These guys have been snakebit.

    Two more BS fines/suspensions

There's already a thread on that hit. Maybe you can argue with me there. This is the thread about where you can make up some imaginary movement on the Scuderi or Ott hits that only you can detect in the instant replay Though because you state your opinions as if they were irrefutable facts, there's a pretty good chance I'm not gonna answer.

How bout this. I can disagree on a call. It happens, so you can take your smug ass somewhere else. Or better yet learn how reel back the douchiness of your posts a couple notches when making a point. Even when the Wings when, someone manages to stir up s*** over something stupid.

I'm liking this Howard guy. Where'd he come from??

    Two more BS fines/suspensions

I disagree that Ott's was clean. Like I said, a penalty, probably not suspension worthy. But that one was worth a penalty and suspension. That hit makes Lebda's hip checks look great by comparison.

So he simultaneously boarded a guy with his elbows up and slashed him?? To me it was a borderline boarding call because the Vancouver player acted like he was shot. Otherwise it was basically just pinning a guy to the boards and there's no call.

thank you ref. When the center ice offical makes a call and the ref 5 feet away doesn't, that probably means something.

Wow, what a flop. He acts like his back was broken.
