Did the Wings screw this up or is it too early to tell?
haroldsnepsts replied to GMRwings1983's topic in General
I think I've posted this before, but I had little opinion on Quincey when he was here as a Wing. Having seen him a lot playing for LA, however, I am surprised at how well he's done. And honestly it's about more than the points he's put up. Half his points have come on the power play, where he's pretty effective. He's not gonna make any great moves at the blueline like Kronwall, but he's solid back there. Honestly he looks solid all around. He keeps it relatively simple and isn't afraid to play physical. Last night against the Capitals he had a great rush into the offensive zone, made a nice pass to Brown which resulted in the game winning goal. I'm sure it's probably on the highlights from last nights game. It was one of those rushes like Lebda makes, using his speed to get into the zone, minus the nice pass that leads to a goal part, which Lebda can never seem to pull off. He may not have a great +/- by the end of the season, but that'll have more to do with the King's inability to score than their defensive weakness. They're allowing fewer shots on goal than anyone in the league right now. As I've said over and over, I really don't get how he couldn't crack this lineup. I'm not saying Holland made some huge error, but I look at Quincey and I'd take him over Lebda for sure. Maybe even Lilja for cost savings. Quincey is logging 21 minutes a game. Imagine what Lilja would look like out there if he played 4 more minutes a game than he does now. It's very early yet, but it doesn't look like an aberration. I don't think he'll be some huge offensive Dman, but it looks like he's going to be a good one. -
Maltby still wears a visor, doesn't he? Honestly I think it's mostly a league-wide trend. But all the guys you listed started wearing visors after some pretty close calls to the eyes. The reason I don't think the visor would screw him up that much is I'm pretty sure Lids started his career playing with one. And I think Drapes wore a visor after the Lemieux incident, but once he healed went without it. then took a puck to the face and started wearing it full time.

I would agree with that. Just saying my impression from last nights game was that I though it looked like he was getting back on track. Getting beat on the outside is really the only one that really stood out to me. The others mostly looked like a team out of sync defensively. I doubt it's the visor. But I do have to wonder why this team is having so many problems being defensively responsible like they were last year, other than lack of focus. The lineup is virtually the same. and the big player they did add is great defensively.

Honestly I may have to demote AO to honorable mention and move someone else up after what I saw against the Kings last night. He was whining on and on about a call, cherry picking, and several times had his elbows and/or stick up in guys' faces as he was making contact. He's an amazing player, but I was kind of surprised actually. I don't get to see him play that much, so I don't know if last night was an aberration, or a bigger part of his game than I realized.

I was thinking Probert McSorley. Epic fight. Starts with lots of jersey grabbing, but then they start throwing haymakers when they get their hands free. It's got to be the longest fight I've ever seen. but yeah, Joey had some quick ones with that right hand of his.

I love that Lilja drops the gloves. As I've said before, he's basically trying to learn to fight against the elite level fighters. Most guys come up learning the ropes. I think it's safe to say Lilja hasn't. That being said, he seriously needs to spend some time with Downey and Mac. Give him some basic tactics and help him learn to stay on his feet when he wants to.

It's just not the same without a theater full of people in costume singing at the top of their lungs. at least that's what I've heard it's like. Had I ever been to one of those. which I totally haven't. ever. I was probably in the theater next door showing a Van Damme and Steven Seagal marathon.

Actually that's an opinion. It probably annoys some people. All you have to do is read through some of this thread to see that not everyone knows he's good, or at least will admit it. People claim he's overrated, his points come from secondary assists, it's because of Malkin... I'll try and keep it shorter than an essay. I will say this. I've finally gotten to see Ovechkin play a couple times this season. He's an amazing player. He also complains to the refs a noticeable amount. Last night he plowed into Dustin Brown in a clear interference penalty. the puck was about 40 feet away and AO slammed into Brown and knocked him on his ass. Yet he was amazed that there was a penalty. He complained to the refs as they took him to the penalty box. Then when the Kings scored a power play goal, he went to not one but both refs to continue arguing his case after he left the box. He complained a lot. Does that make him a whiner? no. But a lot of players do it. This may be funny to say, but I think part of why Crosby gets so much heat for it is because of his facial expression as he's complaining, and honestly just how he looks. Ovechkin looks pissed as he's complaining, but it's still complaining. Crosby and his baby face looks like a whiny child. Just a thought.

Honestly I thought he looked good last night and had several Nick Lidstrom moments. Like winning a puck battle at the offensive blueline as he's skating backwards, so if he doesn't make the play he's still in good position to play D (he won the battle and chipped the puck in to another Wings player). The one bad moment that stood out is the one you're talking about. It's rare to see Lidstrom diving like that because he's getting beat around the outside. Overall though, I had the exact opposite impression in that he seemed more like himself.

Agreed. There's been some tricklers where the player has clearly slowed down to give it time to cross.
-
Strange. It was clearly a high stick, but it was a one-handed stick check by Flip. It's not like it was a vicious slash or anything.
-
no kidding. He had to sit there and wait for it to trickle across the redline. that should've been waived off.
-
Are there many other arenas where the cameras are positioned on the same side of the rink as the bench? Seems like most times they're on the penalty box side.

Wings decided to start trying again.
-
Wow did they let him walk right in.

Part of me thinks you're really a fan of Lilja's, the other part thinks you're really just a fan of that avatar.

DAMMIT! I missed a Lilja fight??!?! @#$%@#$%@
-
homer's gotta be so pissed he's injured tonight. No one's even touching Kopecky in front of the net.

Weren't they Austrian? Not that I've ever seen that movie. Or gone to one of the sing-a-longs.
-
Definitely. I remember fans getting yelled at for lingering on the stairway as they were headed down from their seat. Or not leaving during a break in the action. I also remember having a healthy fear of the "grey coats" at the Joe in the 80s. They weren't exactly ushers. More like bouncers. Mean, scary ones.
-
I wondered if anyone was old enough to remember that guy! I can't stand those idiots. "Hey, look what an ******* I am" *waving* It would drive me nuts to have great seats to a game and have to sit behind some moron who thinks it's more entertaining to wave and be on tv for a second than to actually watch the damn game. I was watching some game this season, and I swear there were two idiots doing it for nearly at least a whole period. I don't understand how they didn't get a beat down.
-
I know edi. Your hate for Crosby is as rational as your love for Lilja.
-
I knew Brown's hit on Robidas would be #1. The guy disappears into the bench so fast it's hilarious. It's cool that the NHL is doing this, but couldn't they put a little bit more effort into it? These could be a bit more polished like most sports highlights are.
-
I think people here mostly just hate Crosby, to an irrational degree. So by extension they hate Pittsburgh. Though honestly your coach didn't help a whole lot during the finals last year. I've honestly never seen a coach whine so much about officiating. It was embarrassing. So it sets this atmosphere of whining for everything Pens related. But like I said, I think most of it is spillover from Crosby hate. And some people may flame away because they assume you are here trolling, but I think it's good to have people who are fans of other teams on here (as long as they realize it is a Wings site, after all). We've got some great members who are mostly fans of another team, so welcome, and you may have to duck and cover from time to time.

Red Wings place forward Darren McCarty on waivers

That period was awful, but 10 minutes of those penalties were matching fighting majors from Dmac's fight.
