I'm a little surprised so few people are considering Cleary as a candidate for the second line. He had a great season, putting up 42 points in 63 games. He never quite got back to that level after he broke his jaw though. Hopefully he will this year.

Chelios's salary better be near the league minimum, since it sounds like they're hiring a part time D-man.
-
He'll definitely be in the running. But if some other defenseman can put together a really good season, I can see them giving it to someone else just out of Lidstrom fatigue. Pronger would've likely won a couple seasons ago had he not been injured.

The Great Brett Favre Kerfuffle of 2008
haroldsnepsts replied to timothy1997's topic in Other Sports
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3490792 I've always been a Favre fan, but I have to admit this is getting a little ridiculous, and is reflecting poorly on him. I was pretty hard on Niedermayer for his antics, and as much as I like Favre, he's doing a pretty similar thing. -
Wings Petitioning to Have Meech's Name on the Cup
haroldsnepsts replied to CanadianSwede19's topic in General
32. So he's 9 games shy. I think the regular season requirement for getting your name on the Cup is being in the lineup half the season. -
I'd have to go with Gallant first and foremost. In his prime with the Wings he was averaging 70+ points and 200+ PIM. But I'd also say Probert, Oates, and Chiasson.
-
I was curious about that actually, so I checked his stats. About half of his assists came on the PP (18 of 37) but surprisingly only 6 of his 21 goals did. Lucky year for him I guess. Overall I feel the same. He'll put up decent numbers when surrounded by talent. I never hated him, but I don't miss the guy.

Time to hang up em up Floppa.

I think you've got to include New York as a premier sports town. The Yankees, Rangers, Mets, Jets, Giants, Knicks, and the U.S. Open. That's a lot of pro sports all accessible in a relatively small area.

I don't really remember the whining (not to say it didn't happen), but I was definitely glad to see Primeau go, after seasons of watching him drive hard to the net only to lose and edge or lose control of the puck right in front of the goaltender. After years of unfulfilled potential, I think it was good for him to get out of Detroit too. And honestly, I was happy he finally started to live up to that potential even if it took a long while.

Yeah. The drop from 8.5 to 4 million, then the drop to 1.5 and 1 million the last couple years of the contract. Especially considering he'll be in his late 30s those years. Depending on health, there's a fair chance he could retire before those years kick in, so it would seem an awful lot like accepting underpayment for the last few years in order to reduce the cap hit.
-
So has this contract been approved? It seems like the last few years, particularly on a contract this length, are in violation of the CBA.

How did this become a thread about Crosby? I think this is a good move by the Blackhawks. It may be a bit early to make Toews captain, but I'm sure they're doing it in part for the same reasons the Red Wings named Yzerman captain. To show the fans that this team has a bright future and this kid will be a big part of it, so please come back to watch the games.

Agreed. Unless you're a huge UT fan, Austin isn't really a sports town. I'd say listing the Dallas teams for Austin is more like including the Chicago teams for Detroit.

Wings who've won all 4 Cups(97, 98, 02, 08)
haroldsnepsts replied to WingsFan2008's topic in General
If this is the worst thread you've ever seen, you must not have been paying attention. It is hilarious how stupid it is, but it has nothing to do with the original poster. It's everyone jumping down his throat and adding valuable insight like "EPIC FAIL," which is quickly becoming the most overused, obnoxious and inane phrases since threads were littered with "PWNED!" The guy was just wondering who was on all four Cup teams. what the hell is everyone's problem? Everyone taking out anger because there's no hockey to watch right now? jeez. -
He didn't say the Wings were rebuilding, unless you can provide a link to some article I missed. It's not like he was insulting the team and thought they would be bad the next year. He said he was more connected with the past than the present of this team, and just felt that it was time to move on. I think he was right on the money with that one. The Wings needed a new identity to take it to the next level, and it'd be harder to do that with Shanny around. He didn't leave for more money. If memory serves the Wings offered him a two-year deal, the first year for $4 million, which is what he took from the Rangers for a one-year deal. The money was the same. Actually the Rangers deal had less security because it was shorter term.

with a mom overseeing the whole thing who can't control her boys and could care less about sports.

Wow. I've never really been a big fan of Burke's, but this has really reached a ridiculous level. Accusing Lowe of tampering? Grown men acting like children. ridiculous. This guy loves any media attention he gets.
-
honestly I still hold out hope for him. Maybe a year playing in Russia will adjust his attitude and wake him up. He's young and I think he can be a very good goaltender. Plus the guy's a badass fighter!
-
He wasn't booted from his job at the start of the season, he wasn't fully recovered from his wrist surgery. And there was talk that his recovery was delayed in part by his poor work ethic. Then he never won back the starting job. There was also all the other crap he pulled. Emery's problems are mostly of his own making. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/stor...&id=3174891

No kidding. People should know better than to take the things you say seriously. Aren't you the guy who swore he was leaving the site and never coming back?

I assumed this thread was about Zetterberg.

Thank you! I was wondering where this 2.5 million came from. This season Draper will make $1.85 million for a cap hit of 1.583m. And wtf does Draper have to do with this anyway? Man what a thread derailment. Whether or not he is overpaid doesn't suddenly make $4m for Feds worthwhile. Robert Lang played 9 more games than Fedorov, had 13 more points and was +9 (compared to the defensive specialist Fedorov's -5). So I guess he's no longer overpaid at $4m and should actually get a raise?
-
well, I think the perfect enforcer would be Bob Probert circa 1988, but Downey is better than no one.
-
I'm glad someone remembers the players talking about that. The Downey love here got a little out of hand last season, but that was probably because we've been so desperate for any enforcer. Still, I'm amazed now that we've won a Cup so many people are back to the "let our powerplay be our enforce" mentality. It was only a couple of seasons ago we had to sit and watch players cheapshot and injure the Wings, and no one did a thing about it.
