Blake's +/- isn't great, but if you do look back through his career, it pretty much coincides with him being on a crappy team versus a good one. If he came to Detroit, Lids would still be carrying the load, as would Rafalski. Blake could play more defensively minded, and that should show up in his stats. Even though he's old, I like the size and bit of nastiness that he brings to the blueline. But I didn't realize he was making 6 mill in L.A. Even for a rental, that's a bit much. How much of that would Detroit be on the hook for if they picked him up at the deadline?

It kinda looks like he's (she's?) scratching her butt and is very happy about it. And as others have said. Thanks to everyone who makes this site a great place to hang out and rant and rave and obsess about the Red Wings with other fans. It's an oasis to someone like myself who no longer lives in the Detroit area. Special thanks to Matt, Trey (who is rarely heard from but does a lot of work on the site behind the scenes), the mods, aflac for the GDT's, and Offsides for the sigs and avatars that help make this place look so much cooler than other fan forums. Suddenly I sound like I'm accepting an award or something, but you get the point. Thanks y'all!

Of course it was deliberate. what check isn't? To me it just looks like a solid hip-check, which often result in spectacular hits. Vladdy used to throw great hip checks. In open ice, they often send the guy flying, and along the boards, they end up crushing the guy to the wall. I'm not huge Blake fan, and I'm definitely not saying we should get him. But he's never struck me as particularly dirty. I'm not sure what you're getting at with the penalty minute thing. But the Ducks were the most penalized team in the league (and might have been in the playoffs too) and we know how that worked out. Beyond that, I think size and nastiness is exactly what Detroit is lacking on the blueline. Our biggest d-man is Lilja, who doesn't really use his size. then it's Lids and Chelios. Chelios isn't nearly as intimidating as he used to be, and Nick doesn't play a physical style at all.

Was Babs pumping up Sammys image for a reason?

Notice how he didn't say he could score. -
only if it's at an old-timers charity game.

"attacks???" That was a clean hip check. If you want to see a D-man taking out a player's knees, watch Lebda's hip check from last year's playoffs. as for dirty d-men, as othes have mentioned, we have (had) Chelios, Konstantinov, Hatcher, and among others of course, Dirty Harry. Blake is not a dirty player. We're not talking about an Ulf Samelsson here. Hey, what do you know, he wore the winged wheel too!

People seem to have photographic memories when it comes to a bad goal Ozzy let in 10 years ago while simultaneously dismissing the Stanley Cup he won as a starter because it was so long ago.
-
I think it'll be Ozzy/Howard next year. It's probably time to bring Jimmy up and see how he fairs in the NHL. And if Ozzy keeps playing like he has been, he definitely deserves the starting job. I'm guessing Holland will still have an eye on the market though to see who's available. I just can't see them affording any big name.

I can't think of a team I'd rather have lose their first playoff game more than the Pats. I actually used to be a pretty big fan, but after the cheating, the way Belichick wasn't even man enough to admit they cheated, and then the running up of the scores as if the league has done them some great injustice, I hope they go down as the biggest choke artists in NFL history. From 16-0 to getting knocked out their first game.

So many to choose from... Bettman fired, no shootout, fire bettman, no point for a loss, lose the enforcer rule, fire bettman, Detroit to the East, fire bettman. Honestly if I could only do one thing, I would probably reduce the size of goaltender equipment, because I'm not sure it would ever happen otherwise.

I'd like to say it was Harold but I'm pretty sure it was actually Mike O'Connell. He played with the team through the 1990 season, and I'm fairly certain he never wore a lid. EDIT: I forgot about Marsh until a couple people mentioned him here. I think he may have been in the lineup after O'Connell.

Maybe Jackman would be concussed if he didn't use his face to stop fists.
-
Exactly. Especially considering Mr. I has some very deep pockets. It's not like an extra 5 mill is going to break the bank.
-
Wow, he dominated a fight against a total non-fighter. Franzen has been in fights about as many times as the Blues have made it past the 2nd round of the playoffs. Yup, I guess that's karma. EDIT: spelling

Tootoo tried his standard method of jumping the guy before he can even get the gloves off, but Wisniewski was just as quick on the draw and pummelled him. What happened to Wisniewski at the end? he doubled over and collapsed by the boards like he hurt his knee or something. EDIT: in the comments section on youtube, people are saying he sprained his MCL.

Thankfully I haven't had to listen to those morons announce a game in a while, but they are probably the worst idiot homer announcers in the league, with the possible exception of the Preds announcers.
-
It's interesting how most successful coaches seem to do all their talking about their own team's performance, instead of yapping in the press about their opponent.
-
Exactly. Looks like on ESPN.com they have Flip as 1st star, then Dom with the 2nd. Still, I thought Kronwall played awesome tonight. As I said earlier, for those who wonder what Wings management sees in him, tonight was a great example. EDIT: Holy crap I posted a lot in the GDT tonight. I guess I was just excited I actually had a chance to watch a Wings game!
-
He had a great game tonight. Some key assists and several great holds on the offensive blueline. I'd make him the second star behind Flip for sure.
-
Flip was the story of the game tonight.
-
Actually I thought Dats just blew a tire there. I think he was at the end of his shift.
-
Sammy with the big goal.
-
another weak call, but Lids stick did hit his skate, then he blew a tire... ugh.
-
man did someone pick Dat's pocket.
-
I think that's where our missing players really shows. The PP looks disorganized compared to the usual first unit of Z Homer and Dats.
