    Ex-NHL Referee Paul Stewart Blog

I was never a huge fan of Stewart when he was a ref and things like this affirm it. Not as bad as McGeough but Stewart seemed to have a big ego and it affected how he managed games. Regarding Lindros, if those stories are true it sounds like Lindros was being a hothead rookie, but never talking to the guy again and admitting that it affected how you called penalties on him for the rest of his career?? And then he has another grudge with Ferraro? He basically admits to playing favorites. It sounds like he took it all way too personally for an NHL ref. As for Yzerman being a whiner, I don't remember him doing much of it early in his career but as he got into the later years he definitely didn't hesitate to give refs an earful.

Favorite Dan Cleary Moment or Play

    Renney out, Granato in

Agreed. I'd rather the Wings signed Cammi than Tony. Granato never hesitated to get his stick up. Then he finally went too far because he was mad someone had the nerve to check him.

    Forum Rules Refresher. PLEASE READ

An update: I know people are unhappy about the signing, but enough with the Cleary jokes in every single thread on the forum. For starters, they're usually not that funny as it gets old very fast. Second, it makes it difficult to carry on a conversation about the actual topic. Thank you.

Rule Changes in the AHL (what the NHL has considered)

Unfortunately it's extremely unlikely the league would get rid of the 3 point system because it artificially inflates points and forces parity. Because of the loser point teams are in the playoff hunt much longer than they otherwise would be, which means there's still a reason for fans to watch and go to games much later in the season.

Rule Changes in the AHL (what the NHL has considered)

I think the 7 minute OT idea is a little goofy, but definitely worth experimenting with if it cuts down on the number of shootouts. Though I'd rather they just do 7 minutes of 4 on 4 OT while keeping the ice scrape and long change.

ok folks, let's please get back on topic about this great off season acquisition by Holland.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

I just don't see why you're creating things to get mad at Cleary about. There's plenty enough to be mad about as a Red Wings fan right now that is factually known.

Confused on the direction of this team going forward

What?? Hossa is streaky maybe, but he isn't lazy or a floater. The guy goes all out even when he's not putting up points. The biggest downside of Hossa is his increasing list of nagging injuries.

Tom Renney could be leaving, too.

I'm not sure he'd be the best PP coach. "Just make a perfect pass to the spot where you know Kozlov will be. He'll make a couple nice moves in the corner and throw a no look pass to where Konstantinov will be, who is cutting back door from the point. If Vladdy doesn't have a high percentage scoring chance then Fedorov will have already moved into position by the far post for an outlet. Simple."

Rule Changes in the AHL (what the NHL has considered)

For OT, I like the dry scrape idea and changing ends so teams have the long change. I'm not crazy about the shifting to 3 on 3 during a 7 minute OT, but I'd still take it over a shootout. It's at least worth seeing how is plays out in the AHL. The helmet rule and major penalty rule are pretty bad though. I'd be interested in them trying to really crack down on the hit from behind rule in the AHL. Don't create a new rule, just enforce the existing one. If they actually don't allow players to hit a guy in the numbers, it seems like it would protect defenseman and help with puck movement in the defensive zone. Right now in the AHL and NHL the rule seems to be enforced as "you can hit a guy from behind into the boards, as long as it's not too bad or he doesn't end up getting hurt" which is a terrible standard.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

It came off as maybe more blunt than intended because I didn't elaborate, but my point stands that you are making all this conjecture about things we have no real idea about. I have no idea and neither do you. He may not have realized how much he liked playing on the Wings until he was confronted with the reality of playing on another team. Who knows. Holland has said (who you're using as a source so let's say he's reliable) that Cleary had multiple offers from other teams. http://www.theoaklandpress.com/sports/20140710/red-wings-sign-cleary-for-another-year I never said it doesn't. As you point out, Holland said it does. Probably. who knows. But you're stating it as fact and it's speculation on your part. I don't need to tell you any of that. If you read any of my posts in this thread, I'm not in favor of bringing Cleary back. I just pointed out that you're hating him for invented reasons. That he only came back because no one else wanted him. That he thinks he deserves special treatment. That his agent keeps bringing up this handshake deal. Nothing you've quoted confirms any of that. It's all just your speculation, which you admit. Which means it is not factual, it is made up based on your opinion.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

The Perfect Human is a tough example for anyone to follow. Lidstrom went out a step slower but still near the top of his game. For all we know Cleary may want to come back because he knows he was terrible last season and doesn't want to go out that way. Like I said, it's not Cleary's job to decide whether or not he should be on the team.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

Cleary is a competitor. What made him great for those years is the same thing that makes him not want to quit now. I can't fault a guy for wanting to play for the Red Wings for another year. If Cleary makes the team it's because the GM who gave him this contract and his coach decided he should have a spot over younger players. That's not Cleary's fault. It's not his responsibility to decline a job with the Red Wings because the GM can no longer evaluate talent effectively. I don't think he should've been offered a contract but if the Wings make the playoffs or not, I blame Cleary for nothing.

Tomas Jurco's Ridiculous New Stick Trick

It's a neat trick, but... [cranky old man] I'd rather see him out there at the end of practice working on picking the top corner, or firing slapshots or something [/cranky old man] which admittedly he may have been doing before or after this video. It's just that stuff like that is cool I guess but has zero usefulness in a game, other than improving his general hand eye coordination. I'm more impressed by a kid grinding it out after practice firing puck after puck.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

I don't have a problem with him not worrying about the fans reactions. Who knows what the team would look like if he listened to us fanatics. It bothers me that he puts it on the players and coach and deflects responsibility for the decision. He's the friggin GM. He not only has final say, he should be pretty damn good at assessing players as well.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

You're probably right. But it's something GM's throw in that usually goes along in exchange for a lower salary. Holland hands them out like mints after dinner.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

Apologies if this has been posted, but if Capgeek's twitter feed is correct, this keeps getting funnier. CapGeek @capgeek · 13h Daniel Cleary gets a $250K signing bonus and a NTC. #RedWings #NHL yeah, I hadn't heard about the NTC yet. It seriously is a staggeringly bad contract.

Tom Renney could be leaving, too.

At the very least, I think the uncertainty about Babcock's future as coach of the Red Wings would have to factor in to some coaches and players' decisions about the Wings.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

I haven't heard solid confirmation, though someone mentioned earlier that you could only do a bonus structure on a one-way deal. Not sure if that's true or not either. The fact that they haven't come out and said it's a two-way deal kinda makes me think it's a one way. Holland has to know what the reaction would be if he released all at once that he re-signed Cleary to a one-way deal for potentially $2.5 million.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

wow. so basically if he makes the team, he gets paid $2.5 million. This is just... wow.

Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

Ok, let me be clear. I think choosing an injured player, let alone an injured Red Wings player, is in poor taste. Then when you make a post predicting that same player will get injured, taken along with your avatar picture it sure seems like you're hoping for it. Or at least would enjoy it if it did happen. Because I'm not sure exactly why someone would choose an image of a Red Wings player in pain on the ice and use that as their avatar. In spite of all that though, you are actually saying you hope Dan Cleary remains healthy so he can play for the Wings?
