Signed Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses
haroldsnepsts replied to anthonyn66's topic in General
Good on him. Like I said, I don't like this signing but I sure don't blame Cleary for wanting to come back and play for the Red Wings. And he is one of the toughest and most fearless players on the team. The ice packs are from years of going to the parts of the ice Franzen is scared to. -

Sorry, I was trying to follow what you were saying but was distracted by your choice to use an injured Red Wings player down on the ice as your avatar. But I guess it goes with you hoping for a Wings player to get injured. -
I'm just saying Babs still hasn't signed an extension, has he? And there's a lot of teams right now that would be more interesting to coach than what Babcock has had to work with in Detroit the last few years.

Babcock is probably next.

Who has been Ken Holland's worst recent free agent signing?
haroldsnepsts replied to uk_redwing's topic in General
For me it was a tossup between Sammy at 2 years with a NTC and a raise, and Tootoo at $1.9 mill for 3 years. Sammy's was frustrating because it was Holland's classic move of returning to a former Red Wing when they're past their prime, then throw in the contract. But Tootoo's was completely baffling because he overpaid for a 4th liner that his coach had little interest in using (which I agree with). It's not like Tootoo was a different player for the Wings. They knew what they were getting, paid too much, then didn't use him. -

To be fair, going back the last 4 playoffs, Cleary has more points than Franzen. (I keep repeating that stat because I still can't believe it's true). I was and still am a big Cleary fan. I can't fault the guy for still wanting to play hockey with the Wings. But they should not have re-signed him. -

And Holland had offered him a three year deal at the start of the summer that Cleary turned down. -

Because if they happen at once the dumpster fire probably would've spread to the whole building, and it's no fun to fight a fire that size. Please tell me you're kidding about that last part. -
Signed Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses
haroldsnepsts replied to anthonyn66's topic in General
I'm assuming the bonus is tied to some minimum number of games played with the Wings. Still, I am shocked by this deal. Even if it's a two-way deal, I wasn't expecting that kind of money. I think when Maltby did it, it was something like $500k. I would rather Holland put that money towards retaining some of Kindl's salary in a trade. -

As a moderator here, I'm just glad the Wings didn't announce the re-signing of Quincey and Cleary on the same day. -
Kane & Toews Sign Identical 8-year, $10.5M AAV Extensions

It's hard for me to feel sorry for Keith. He's overrated as a defenseman and a dirty player. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a very good Dman, but 2 time norris winner?? If 5 years ago you would've told me Keith would win 2 Norris trophies and Weber wouldn't have any, I would've thought you were nuts. that's what we said last time. -

That's the total contract value though, so it's only $2.6 mill a year. If Tootoo was worth 1.9 million 2 years ago, Ott is definitely worth 2.6 that now. -
As mentioned, there are a lot of existing threads where this same point is and can be discussed.

Agreed . There's a lot to be excited about with Mantha but we'll know a lot more when he gets some games in the AHL. at 6'5" 205 lbs in the QMJHL he was a men among boys, playing with other mostly smaller 18, 19 and 20 year olds.

The Oates trade was definitely worse. Don't forget Adam Graves, Klima and Sharples for Jimmy Carson. The Wings don't have a great track record when it comes to trading guys named Adam.

Trial date set in Steve Moore’s lawsuit against Todd Bertuzzi
haroldsnepsts replied to WingsAlways's topic in General
No, I don't. Do you have a source confirming that? Because from what I've read he still has serious cognitive limitations as a result of the incident. http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/2013/01/14/bertuzzimoore_court_documents_shed_light_on_exnhl_players_struggles.html I'm not saying I agree with the number he's asking for in the lawsuit. I doubt that he would've been some genius financial expert, but it sure sounds like he can't hold a lot of other jobs he would've been qualified for because of his symptoms. Then throw on top of that his lost earnings from a potential NHL career. I agree with frankgrimes, the NHL should've settled this and put this behind them years ago. Instead they allegedly withheld the $220,000 disability payment Moore was owed under the CBA unless he signed a clause saying he wouldn't sue the NHL or any franchises. And let this lawsuit drag on and rear its ugly head over and over for 10 years now. What a terrible decision by the league. -
I have no words. Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 2m Kyle Quincey signs a 2-year deal with AAV of $4.25M with DET.

I'm not a fan of Green but you make a convincing argument. Injuries would be my main concern with him, especially after last season. As much grief as Rafalski got for his defense the last couple years his puck movement, especially his stretch pass, was 2nd only to Lidstrom for keeping things moving forward. A couple long bomb passes from Rafalski would keep the forecheckers honest. Even with Green's defensive shortcomings, maybe a real puckmover can help keep the Wings from getting pinned in their own end so often. As disappointed as I am with that re-signing, I'd be more okay with it if Kindl is gone.

Signed Wings sign Kevin Porter to 1-year, 2-way contract
haroldsnepsts replied to Swayze's topic in General
Agreed. I don't think it kept him from signing anyone else. Just unfortunate timing of the news. It was like he was unintentionally trolling Wings fans. "you'll be extremely happy to know I signed....... Kevin Porter!" -

Signed Wings sign Kevin Porter to 1-year, 2-way contract
haroldsnepsts replied to Swayze's topic in General
No. It's all about timing. Everyone was anxiously awaiting Holland to make some big signing for the Red Wings. That didn't happen, then this gets tweeted among all the big UFA names. If this came out in a couple days headlined "Holland signs center for the Griffins to a two-way contract," it would've provoked a very different response.
