They should also run segments during games to highlight the history and rules of the game. I wouldn't want to see a 5 minute piece on offsides, but they could do a quick bit on too many men on the ice. or hooking. But make it interesting and preferably funny. And use NHL players in the segments. Then they could also show some clips of hockey's history. Ideally it would involve one of the teams from the current game. Give some backstory, history, highlight, anything to learn more about that team and about the game. sadly though, the nhl continues to have the lamest marketing of any pro sport.

Hey, the Wings sure gave the Ducks more of a challenge than the Sens did. With Selanne and Giguere I don't really have a strong feeling on what's gonna happen. It wouldn't surprise me if Teemu wanted to retire after this. And it'll be interesting to see how much Anaheim is willing to cough up to keep Giguere, if he's gonna give them any discount, and just what he'd get on the open market.

I had a similar thought, but to target the ads specifically during football playoffs. The theme being what football fans can watch once the Super Bowl is over. It'd be expensive as hell, but they could run a final ad during the Superbowl. Show some depressed football fan discovering hockey. And like you said, show some great NFL play with a receiver getting hit. Then show a crushing hit in hockey. A runningback juking through defenders, Crobsy scoring on a 1-on-4. So it's not so much saying hockey is better than football, but that fans can get all the things they love about football from a hockey game. And for chrissakes, have the NHL promote its star players in these ads. Give casual or non-hockey fans a name they can associate with a team.

He's 33 years old, just won the Conn Smythe and the Stanley Cup playing alongside his brother, and it looks like the Ducks will have a strong team next year. Why exactly would he retire?

Jiri Hudler - Would you have played him more?
haroldsnepsts replied to SouthernWingsFan's topic in General
Well said. People seem to forget the two own goals Anaheim scored for us to win the first game. Or all the power plays, including key 5 on 3's that the Wings didn't convert throughout the series. And I wouldn't want the Wings to be a dirty team... but I'm growing weary of hearing the word "classy." Classy is apparently the new gritty. -
Ah. Forgot he was a mod. One more reason I'm glad I'm not one.

I guess it's permitted. It is against the rules, but is fairly lightly penalized at the NHL level. I'm guessing it's punished much more harshly in a lot of the leagues most 12-18 year olds play in. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want fighting out of hockey, but we're talking about kids here. It's kinda like teaching them the best way to charge the mound in baseball, or take someone out with an illegal slide tackle in soccer.

Actually I think it's pretty different than a kid taking martial arts. yes martial arts is ultimately about fighting or self defense, but it mostly promotes discipline, physical fitness. In most respectable dojos kids have to learn the katas, learn the history of the martial art, and take tests to progress to the next level. Also, martial arts, even in competitions for kids that age, do not allow things like blows to the head. Whereas this class is teaching how to fight within the context of another sport. And it's a style of fighting that's all about blows to the head with no protective headgear.

Actually you do. If you click on a person's username, one of the choices is to add them to the ignore list. It's under "Profile options."

Jiri Hudler - Would you have played him more?
haroldsnepsts replied to SouthernWingsFan's topic in General
That's a meaningless fact though. It's a manipulation of statistics that doesn't reveal anything. So Hudler got 2 assists in 6 games. That doesn't mean if he had played 18 games he would've had 6 points, thereby being superior to Flip's 5 points in 18 games. I don't think he's as useless as some do, but justified or not, he doesn't seem to have a place on this team. If Babcock is going to be here for a few years, I can't see Hudler getting much ice time. If there's a decent trade to be had, I'd be in favor of it. -
I can agree with that. You were just a little harsh in your first assessment.

Ultimately I think you're right. He's just not gonna get the ice time as long as Babs is here, and isn't really a critical part of the Wings future. If they could get something good for him in a trade, it's worth doing. -
My point is that he's no fairy. He's tougher than me and you, that's for sure. Of course you're suppose to go into corners and not be afraid, but I see an awful lot of guys in the NHL who pull up when they know someone's behind them. As I said, Kozlov really isn't the greatest fit for the Wings right now, but your talk about the player he was here has no bearing in reality.
-
And because they made a crapload of money in the playoffs with the Wings getting to the conference finals. Do they normally hold onto some fee? Man, that's a large chunk of change to lay out and just now be getting refunded.

As an article on TSN.ca suggests, the off season signings could reveal the new owner's hand. If they don't make much of an effort to keep any of their UFA's like Kariya, Forsberg, Hartnell, etc. it's probably because they're going into "rebuilding mode" as in rebuilding the Predators in a new market. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=210221&hubname=nhl

Ultimately with the Nashville, whether they meet the ticket quota or not, it seems like it's only delaying the inevitable.
-
Kozlov came back from a horrific car crash when he was 19 to have a successful career in the NHL. At 5'10 he's undersized, but has proved he's tough as nails. He's never afraid to go into corners. And remember when Stevens nearly took his head off? In short, you and your homophobic comment are way f*cking off base. Tree stump>you

When was your first Wings game at the Joe?
haroldsnepsts replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Dating myself a bit here, but it was sometime during the 85-86 season. Yzerman, Gallant, Klima, Kocur, Probert, and of course Harold Snepsts. My friends dad always got free tickets, so I got to come along. The Joe was practically empty and good seats were easy to come by. But the very next season the Dead Things would once again become the Red Wings under Demer's leadership. -
agreed. He's here and probably worth a short term gamble. Though honestly I don't have high hopes for him being the physical player with a scoring touch that he could be. I'd love for him to sign with the wings and prove me wrong though. As I said in another thread, on paper he's exactly what they need.

Hoodlum isn't afraid to go the net, especially for a little guy, and could be the sniper the Wings need (for those wanting Kozlov back). I haven't seen enough of the guy to really get a feel. But considering how Babcock talks about him and plays him, there's gotta be some truth to his defensive liability, his lack of skating and effort at times. It seems that if you're over 6'1" and 200 lbs, Babs is much more willing to tolerate those deficiencies. -
Agreed. Detroit dodged a bullet not signing playoff washouts like Tkachuk and Guerin. I'm for signing Bertuzzi if it's short term and relatively cheap. He's already here, and as you pointed out, these guys are hard to come by. It's worth gambling on his health and for returning, because on paper, he's what the Wings need.

We can't really know the innerworkings of why she wanted to move, if that was true, etc. At first he said it was family matters, or something like that. People insinuated it was her, and he never really provided any reason. Then things sort of died down a little and he whined to the press about all the speculation. Basically even if it was her that wanted to go, I just think he should man up and take the wrap. Give the fans some reason and let them hate you. Quash the rumors about it being because your wife wants to leave.
-
Sorry, for me Pronger is still the biggest ****** from that situation. Even if it is true that you're leaving because you're wife doesn't want to live there anymore, you don't sell her out like that and let her take the heat. Be a friggin man about it.

I agree that in their prime Fedorov was absolutely the more dominant more complete player. But he's not been that guy for four years now. He's a shadow of his former self. Fedorov played 73 games this year and managed 18 goals playing almost 20 minutes a game. Granted, Columbus is terrible, but he used to be the go to guy that made everyone around him better. Sergei was a great player on the Wings and a huge part of their success. He's just not what they need right now. And I'd never want to sign a player to the Wings just so they could retire here. As for Kozlov, Atlanta stunk up the joint this year. It's hardly a reflection on his playoff history. I agree big guys gotta have talent too. I don't want a goon. But the Wings could use more size.

It is? I guess the Ducks have a new third jersey that says Edmonton Oilers?
