I never said I didn't understand why some fans boo him. It's just lame, that's all. the one's booing are the ones that need to get over the past and move on.
-
Possibly. But there's two major differences. 1) Fedorov did not leave for more money 2) Datsyuk did not play here for 13 seasons and win 3 stanley Cups for Detroit (including being tied for the team record of most points scored in the playoffs)

I don't really follow your reasoning here. so what he did for us in the past that's good doesn't matter - it's a hundred years later. But at the same time, these imagined offenses he committed should never be forgotten and deserve to be booed anytime he touches the puck? And we're somehow the ones who need to let go? not the people who are booing fedorov for some imagined slight committed over 4 years ago? if people are entertain themselves by booing, seems to me they're a little simple. like I said, I get booing the real villians of the game, but Feds is hardly one of them. Red Wings fans just seem like a bunch of ungrateful idiots when they boo a guy who was a big part of this team for over ten seasons. I wonder how current Wings players feel knowing that if they don't leave in exactly the right way, they'll be considered enemy number one in Detroit, no matter what they acheived here.

I think L.A. would kind of be a big story, but not like New York. L.A. just isn't a hockey town. So the Kings winning the Cup would be a bit more of a novelty story than anything else. Honestly I think Rangers Leafs would be the dream scenario for the NHL.
-
to the public at large, the only names they would recognize were Gretzky and Mario, and then Mess when he became a Ranger. Much like now it's basically going to be Ovechkin and Crosby. There are plenty of other legitimate stars now, as there was then, but that doesn't mean they have the name recognition that guys like Gretzky and Lemieux did. Ask any sports fan who doesn't watch hockey, and they've probably never heard of Yzerman. Honestly when Crosby was getting drafted, I knew if he went to the Penguins it could help save that franchise, but I wanted him to go to New York so it would help the NHL. New York is not just one of the biggest cities in the country. It is the largest media center in the united states. A local team doing well there gets more national attention for that reason.

I have never heard Fedorov say anything close to saying he hated it in Detroit or would never play here again, so I can only assume you're being sarcastic. unless you can provide a link. I don't expect people to worship the guy, but booing him every time he touches the puck is so petty and lame. Fedorov is hardly a villian worthy of that treatment. I'd rather fans save if for real enemies like Pronger, or Tootoo.

a little off topic, but i just wanted to say how great it is to see someone scoring 50 goals a season in the NHL again. (vinny lecavalier, and possibly Heatley)
-
Agreed. I think most people boo because they think he left for more money, and that he compared Detroit to the Soviet Union. Neither of which are true.

What's french for "we already have plenty of threads on this topic?" http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=41530

Wow. Go Feds! I never saw that clip before.

a 35,000 person arena would be a terrible place to watch hockey. The main reason I like the Joe is it's a great venue for hockey games. steep seating and good sightlines. Making an arena big enough to hold that many people, especially because I'm assuming it would also have mid-level luxury boxes, would put the fans pretty far away from the game. Especially the upper bowl fans, who in my opinion are the core of the fan base. you said you didn't know the answer, then you answered it. I think you're right. I'd guess that no one has figured out how to build an arena that big and still have it be a decent place to watch hockey. They probably rake in more money with the luxury boxes anyway, so it'd make more sense to go smaller and add more boxes than to try to add 5,000 or so more fans.

Or you could actually buy it right through the website and support filmmakers who made a move about a sport you love, instead of stealing it.

You must have a better source for stats than I do. where does it break the goals down like that? For +/-, they only count even strength goals, when you give up a goal while on the power play (-1), or when you score a shorthanded goal (+1).

Lang was a -2 against Edmonton. As was Zetterberg and Yzerman. So Yzerman's lazy and he sucks? Hank is lazy and he sucks?
-
It's astounding really. Listening to those guys, it's like they picked a couple of drunk fans out of the stands to call the game.
-
No kidding. Calder and Bertuzzi score. Dom gets the shutout. Holland looks like a genius tonight.
-
Holland dumped Williams and brought in Calder and Bertuzzi for practically nothing. Signing Hasek is looking like a pretty shrewd gamble that's paying off. The Wings are first overall. He's made a lot of smart moves to do what he can to prep this team for the playoffs without selling its future. Now it's up to the guys on the ice.
-
I'd want him to stop all the garbage that comes with all those great qualities he has. The diving, the turtling, the bad penalties, the mouthing off in the press...
-
How can you know that his superb post-season perfomance is over, when the post-season hasn't started yet? By your reasoning, if Lang performs yet again this playoffs, then he is still a decent player.
-
I feel like I've been saying this about once a day here lately, but does anyone actually read the links? It's a documentary. It follows a youth hockey team trying to win the national title. None of those players will be acting, they were interviewed and share their youth hockey experiences in the movie.

so now he's cocky and a liar?
-
He is? Everything I've ever heard from Crosby is humble to the point of being dull. Using the same sports cliches over and over. I agree. Anyone breaking Gretzky's records would have to be a god considering how much goaltending has improved since that era. And on top of that, teams are so much more responsible defensively. There's a lot more trapping and a lot less running and gunning. I'd be amazed if anyone topped Gretzky's records without increasing net size or some other rule change that really increased scoring.

There's Lidstrom's Conn Smythe and 4 Norris trophies (hopefully soon to be 5), along with runner up to the Norris three times. So for 7 years he was considered one of the top two defenseman in the league. You could make a better case for Fedorov with his Hart and Selke and years with the team, but I still don't see him getting his jersey retired. The bottom line is that years from now, people will be talking about Yzerman and Lidstrom as among the greats. Shanny and Fedorov are talented players, but not among the greats. oh and what else did Yzerman do besides the Cups? The Lester B Pearson Award, the Conn Smythe trophy (he would've had two but Vernon won by two votes in '97), the Selke trophy. 6th in NHL history in points. 8th in goals 7th in assists First in Wings history in assists, 2nd in points and goals (behind Gordie Howe). One of five players to ever score more than 150 points in a season. Gretzky 215, Lemieux 199, then Stevie Y with 155.
-
can you show me the part where I said being a Red Wing for your whole career was a requirement? Had Shanny and Feds stayed here, it doesn't mean they suddenly deserved to have their jersey hung. But if they stayed and done more great things with the team, it would've increased their chances. The key part being "done more great things with the team." Like I've said several times now, it's an extremely high standard. It has to be a great great player who spent a significant part of their career here. Winning three Cups is definitely significant parts for Shanny and Fed's career, but neither will be looked upon as a Red Wing great like Stevie was and Lidstrom is.
-
a lot of things could have happened. What did happen is that Stevie spent his career here in Detroit, was one of the greatest captains in the game, won three Stanley Cups, an Olympic Gold medal, and on and on and on... so it's fitting that he has his number retired here. Not so for Shanny or Feds. There were many important players on all of the 10 Cup winning teams. That doesn't mean that they should have their number retired. Lidstrom is the only one who warrants jersey retirement. Had Shanny and Fedorov stayed in Detroit for the remainder of their careers, they both would've had a better shot at jersey retirement.
