1/8 GDT: Detroit Red Wings Vs. Dallas Stars
haroldsnepsts replied to WhiteLightning91's topic in General
I didn't see the game, but from wha it sounds like, I agree that Babcock needed to yank Ozzy after the fourth goal. Because either Ozzy was playing poorly and should've been pulled, or the team quit playing and Osgood should've been pulled to change things up and keep him from getting shelled. EDIT: Did Babcock use the timeout at any point to try and stop the bleeding? -

Without his *teams 12 wins we'd be good and f***ed. You forgot the Cardinal rules of Detroit goaltenders, NNick! 1) Manny's wins are because of his great play. Ozzie's wins are because of the team. 2) Manny's losses are because of poor team play. Ozzie's losses are because of his poor play alone. -

Why is it idiotic. I think it's more idiotic that you would defend Osgood after his performance THIS WHOLE YEAR. I'm thinking about next year already. Howard needs the experience and Osgood needs the boot.... idiot. It is idiotic. I don't care if Ozzy scored all six goals for dallas by flipping the puck into his own net, bringing up Howard to back up Legace would be a HUGE mistake. The kid has the potential to be a franchise goaltender for Detroit. He's just come out of the college game, which is a world away from even the minor leagues. He needs to be seeing pucks at the AHL level, not watching NHL games from the bench. -

We chased Turco early in the 2nd and the team decided the game was over. Maybe a couple players on a handful of shifts kept trying but other than that they all packed it in for the night. peace It seems like one of the biggest problems the Wings have this season is remembering that a hockey game is 60 minutes long. -

Last time I checked in, we were up 3-1 in the second period. WTF happened?!?!?! -

It's almost as if goalies other than Osgood occasionally let in bad goals. (especially when their team is playing poorly) -
Spector: Turco may sign with Detroit this summer
haroldsnepsts replied to PRStoetzer's topic in General
that's the irony. Most NHL goaltenders probably don't realize they will be more loved by Wings fans when they play for any other team than Detroit. -
I think Lou got himself hooked on something with all the CBA negotiations cuz he was definitely on something during the offseason when he signed Rafalski to $4.2M, Malakhov to $3.6M, Mogilny to $3.5M, and McGillis to $2.2M. peace Old habits die hard I guess.

you'd have to throw in some crack for the Devil's GM to smoke while making that deal.

You think Luongo will get huge bucks? After some of the busts this year, like Khabibulin, and some $900,000 guys like Joseph playing so well, I'm curious to see what the salaries for goaltenders will be like this year in the "new NHL." It seemed like in the free agent madness prior to this season, there wasn't a lot of middle ground. They were either bargain basement, or ridiculously overpaid.

3 Way Deal Involving The Wings, Bolts, and Ducks
haroldsnepsts replied to e_mcgrath88's topic in General
Both of the Wings goaltenders have done average, at best. Osgood started bad but is getting better. Manny started well and then played poorly. Both goalies usually fair as good or bad as the team plays. I do agree though that Howard should stay in the AHL, and it's unlikely either Manny or Ozzy are going anywhere. Neither one has much trade value, and they're both relatively cheap. (assuming Manny plays at least half the season. Otherwise he's overpaid). -
I wouldn't trade Legace, but to get Jackman, we'd dominate the league. Jackman played for my hometown Pats in the Dubya, and wow, was he amazing. Heck, he still is amaizing. I wouldn't put Legace in the mix, but if we were to get Jackman, I'd be extremly happy. Jackman would be awesome.. but your right.. i wouldnt risk manny either! I'd give up Manny and Lilja in a heartbeat to get Jackman, but I can't imagine why the Blues would ever make that deal. They've made a lot of boneheaded moves this last year, but even that trade would be a stretch.

I can't envision a universe where Marty Brodeur would be backing up Manny Legace.

mainly it's that you said you read it on the Detroit News wings section, but didn't provide a link. If the story were actually in that paper, a link would be easy to find.

3 Way Deal Involving The Wings, Bolts, and Ducks

Find me a post where anyone has said anything remotely close to "Osgood won the 98 Cup by himself." While you're at it, show me evidence that Osgood sees himself as a Hall of Famer. You're making crap up just to bash Osgood. Speaking only for myself, I only refute the claim that we could've won in 98 with anyone in net. You need strong goaltending to win the Cup. Osgood is generally good, with flashes of greatness. Though this year to date he has been terrible. Right now in net we've got a formerly good goalie who's playing poorly, a career backup who always wears down and stumbled in the playoffs, and a totally unproven rookie. Our goaltending situation does not bode well for the Cup. I have to disagree with NNick that in the playoffs, our goaltending situation will make or break this team, because we don't have the talent level to overcome less than stellar goaltending - which is what we have. Hopefully something will change by then. -
3 Way Deal Involving The Wings, Bolts, and Ducks

Are you seriously saying that Legace is better than Curtis Joseph??? Last playoffs, Manny got yanked after giving up 3 goals on 11 shots against the Predators. And yes, it could've been worse. We could've lost that series. And we could've been blown out by Calgary. Last playoffs, Cujo had a Save % of .939 and a GAA of 1.38 (versus Manny's .905 and 2.18) Joseph simply gave us a better chance to win. Not to mention this season for the Coyotes, Joseph has a SV% of .932 and a GAA of 2.12. To think Legace is better than Joseph is downright delusional. -

Here we go again: First, I'll believe this rumor when I get even a whiff of it from somewhere else. Osgood has played like crap this season, but if you think he hasn't played well since 1998, you haven't been watching. The 30% less games Manny has played is a HUGE difference. Manny's never been a starter. That's a fact you can't get around. He's never even played a full season. That doesn't mean he can't, but it does mean that the stats you're comparing don't mean a thing because it's nowhere near apples to apples. Manny doesn't have many early playoff exits because no one has ever seen fit to start him in the playoffs except last season, when he got yanked for a better goaltender after having a terrible game. Remember? Does getting benched not count as an early playoff exit? Even great goalies have early playoff exits. But I think Ozzy's name on the Cup as a starting goaltender probably eases some of those painful memories. In 1996, when the 24-year old Osgood started his 50th NHL game, he already acheived more in his career than Manny (who is virtually the same age) has to date. If Osgood is a has been, Manny is a never was. -
Has there been any verification (from legit sources) that this is actually happening? I read the title of this thread and got my hopes up...

ugh. Harrington definitely wasn't the problem. The Lions continue to be their own worst enemy. Why do they have to be down by 20 points before they start taking shots downfield? When will the blame finally get far enough up where it belongs, on Millen's shoulders? The best thing I saw out of the Lions all day was the old clip of Barry Sanders running.

So Manny's lack of a track record is an asset? You do know that Manny and Ozzy are the same age, don't you? When Osgood was playing his first playoff games in 1994, Manny had just made the jump to the AHL. When Osgood won the Stanley Cup as the starting goaltender in 1998, Manny made the big jump to the IHL. So you're saying Osgood is worse because he let in some shaky goals in an NHL playoff games years ago, and Manny's better because he hasn't, though it's because he was busy tending goal in the AHL and IHL? Osgood has played consistent enough to start the playoffs. (remember the aforementioned Stanley Cup he won?) I'm sure you can count more than a few softies Osgood has let it, and they were heartbreakers. how long ago was that? How many other goalies have you watched play as many games? Osgood's "shaky history" is a couple isolated moments from years ago. When's the last time you've watched him in the playoffs? I never said Manny can't do it. But Manny played inconsistent in his last game, though because it was Manny, none of the goals were his fault. If it were Ozzy in net, people would be saying he should've stopped all those goals. And for the record, and for the millionth time, I don't think Manny is bad or Osgood is great. But if Ozzy plays well this season, he's the guy I would want in net in the playoffs. And for the millionth time, I just think it's odd how much credit Manny gets for doing very little, and how little credit Ozzy gets for winning the Cup. It's not worth arguing anymore, because you're too biased towards Legace to objectively rate their performances.
-
Maybe because he's played a total of four playoff games in his career? Legace is a total unknown. That's a question mark. Yes Yes, I remember all the heartbreaking Wings losses in the playoffs over the years, trust me. We had big problems besides Ozzie that kept us from winning. The Red Wings didn't have what it took in 94. But of course, it was all Ozzie's fault. Good thing the only goals on Legace are shots no one could've stopped. I'll make it simple too: All Red Wings goaltenders who won the Stanley Cup as a starter, please step forward. Whoa... not so fast there Manny. That's at least worth a question mark in Manny's column, and a little credit to Osgood.
-
exactly solid goaltending. great team. Not the other way around. The 2002 team had great goaltending and a great team. Ozzie was all we needed in 1998 to win. We were on a role. He played as well as he had to. The best Manny will provide in the playoffs is solid goaltending. At best. Osgood will be solid with the chance he'll be great. Who knows. Maybe Manny will prove me wrong in the playoffs, but I doubt it.
-
That's not taking anything away from Ozzie, saying they could've had a pylon in net? I realize that's popular opinion, but it's not true. You can't win the Stanley Cup without solid goaltending and a great team. Few teams win on their goaltenders back (Hasek never won until he came to Detroit).
