    Tootoo Waived

That's just until they bring Ericsson back on the 15th. Then I'm pretty sure Tootoo has to be assigned to Grand Rapids.

The Cleary discussion has wandered well off track of anything remotely related to the thread topic. This thread is about Stephen Weiss. If anyone would like to continue their Cleary obsession, start a thread where you can discuss it there. As for the topic, I think Holland's signings in 2012 were awful, but it's waaaay too early to make any determination about Weiss. He's on a new team and hardly played last season due to injury. I'll give him more than 16 games to figure it out.

    Franzen believes he’s playing well.

Seriously, what is up with this mysterious injury? It's not like it's playoff time. And even then they announced Lidstrom getting speared in the junk and needing surgery on his ********. I doubt they're not saying it to be demure.

I'm not sure if this has been covered already but Khan makes it sound like if Tootoo clears he won't be sent to GR now because they don't need to clear a spot until the 15th when Ericsson comes off LTIR. So when Holland said he won't be sent to Grand Rapids, he really meant he won't be sent yet. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2013/11/red_wings_mike_babcock_waiving.html

That still sounds like he CAN be waived, it just doesn't make much sense since it would bring little cap relief. and as vladdy pointed out, it's more about wishing. And personally I can't get it through my head because I'm old and they keep changing the waiver rules just when I think I've got them figured out.

Sammy's got the NTC, so they'd have to convince him to go to another team. I'm not sure why he would since the money would be the same. Maybe if they keep making him a healthy scratch he'd be willing to get traded so he could be in the lineup every night. Agreed. Holland did well this offseason, but the team is still paying for his awful 2012. Sammy would've been twice as brutal were he not on LTIR last season.

I know Cleary is widely hated here, but whether people agree with it or not, this move shouldn't be a surprise. First of all, it was never really about Tootoo versus Cleary from the team perspective. They don't play the same roles. The only reason they're being compared is people here don't like Cleary. But he's still a player and an asset the team thinks has value. But comparing the two anyway: Cleary plays almost 15 minutes a night, plays on the PP, the PK, and can be trusted at the ends of games. Tootoo is a 4th liner who has been a healthy scratch. He provides good energy and hitting and some staged fights for about 8 minutes a night. He's not great defensively and can't be used in any special teams situation. They have roughly the same cap hit. So from a GM's perspective keeping Cleary makes a lot more sense. I would love it had they waived Sammy. $3 million cap hit who can't stay in the lineup and is unremarkable when he does.

Definitely. As Twitter has gotten more popular plenty of sports journalists have gotten it wrong trying to be the first to get a story out there. McKenzie is one of a handful of people I know will get it right.

I'd definitely put Sammy at the top of the list for signing's killing this team. I'm not a huge Tootoo fan but in terms of usefulness I'd call it at least a wash between him and Samuelsson.

    Lines Thread

Keep in mind though that was the defensive group last playoffs, only flip Quincey and Smith to the second pairing. It often wasn't pretty, but they did surprisingly well considering their inexperience. This year those bottom three haven't looked great but there's still a lot of season to play. And DeKeyser is only going to be better and better. What worries me more about the bottom three is if any of the top three are injured for a long stretch, and they have to step up and fill those minutes. Quincey and Smith have shown they can be capable of it but sure haven't looked that way lately.

    Philly Capitals line brawl

Philly gets blown out by the Caps, an all out brawl ensues. Emery skates the length of the ice to fight Holtby, who wants no part of him. The ref stands and watches as Emery throws haymakers at the back of Holtby's head. Unbelievable. Emery is a nutjob and a disgrace. After the game he admitted that Holtby didn't want to fight him. Emery said he told him to protect himself, and that Holtby didn't have a choice. Downie left the game on a stretcher with a concussion from the fight. Lecavalier left the game with a facial injury from his fight. Just when you thought Philly couldn't be more of a joke right now.

I hope they tank the rest of the season and for some unknown reason trade Simmonds to the Wings.

Marty the Marmot mascot attacked during WHL game

No. I wouldn't advocate anything stronger than being banned from the arena. As for being pissed about it, I think that's missing the point. These events are entertainment between periods, getting people shuffling around on the ice to sit on inflatable chairs. The point is for it to be silly and entertaining to the people watching, not to stage a fierce competition. That's what the actual hockey game is for. So it's hard for me to call it cheating when the whole thing is so half-assed and random anyway, and it's supposed to be. Like I said, they're not giving away cars. A lot of the time everyone ends up getting something for their trouble anyway.

Yeah, I should be more careful. It's dangerous to use the word "clearly" these days with the witch hunt there is for Cleary. As for Flip, it's one of the reasons it's not "What could have been if he stayed" to me because I even if he has a great offensive year in Tampa, I don't think it would've happened here.

Marty the Marmot mascot attacked during WHL game

I think it probably doesn't look that bad because frankly everything looks kind of comical when you're in a mascot suit. But being grabbed and driven to the ground like that hurts when it happens on grass. Then imagine it on ice. The Kings have a mascot (who I find mostly annoying but am apparently in the minority) who often does the same thing during contests. He'll mess around making it slightly harder for one person or help someone else. But the contest is always for something fairly small. It's not like they're about to win a car. When you agree to run around on ice and try to sit on an inflatable chair between periods of a hockey game, you really shouldn't expect it to be officiated like an olympic event. Especially when one of the officials is wearing a giant Marmot suit.

I'm not sure if those quotes are supposed to be things I've said, but to be clear, I liked Flip. He played heavy on the puck (as Babcock likes to put it) and clearly had offensive talent. For whatever reason though, he just never fully took that next step with Detroit and honestly a new start in Tampa is probably best for him. But my comment about the backhander wasn't a criticism of Flip, though I could see how it would look that way in this thread. I was reading this thread and watching the NHL network when I saw the highlight of him tossing the puck towards the net on his backhand and it trickling in. It was just funny because of the timing of it all, as if it was being rubbed in somehow. "The puck goes in every time in tampa!" It was two times in a row I turned on the NHL network to see a Filppula highlight.

    11/4 GDT: Red Wings 2 @ Jets 4

I'm inclined to agree. I think a fight can set the tone, but fighting before the game even really starts doesn't do much other than get Tootoo to sit down for 5 minutes. A good shift of him crashing and banging could've done a lot more to set the tone.

    Philly Capitals line brawl

That pic makes it look like an actual fight and not the mugging it was. I think this one is more representative. It's why I had no problem with Kessel's BC two-handers when John Scott jumped him. Had he actually tried to even just get through a fight with Scott it would've looked a lot like what Emery did to Holtby. Holtby unfortunately had the bigger goal stick and Emery is well protected from any slash. And that wasn't old time hockey. The rest of the fights maybe, but not this. If it were at least two or three guys would've jumped Emery and started pounding on him, refs or not. Or he would've got run later in the game like he deserved.

11/2 GDT: Red Wings 5 at Oilers 0

It sure was a fortunate coincidence for Ericsson that his injury got bad enough that he was out of the lineup on the very day his first child was born. So while he must be in a lot of pain from a shoulder injury no one saw happen, the upside is he gets to spend a few weeks with his new baby and the Wings get some roster space from him going on LTIR right as Helm comes back. All very fortunate coincidences I guess.
