Brassard cherry picking and no one noticed in time.

Andersson upset with the linesman after getting tossed from a faceoff again. I'm guessing he's going to get tossed from them for the rest of the night now. Great save Jimmy! Kindl asleep in the slot. Nice shot by Zuccarello.

At least once a game I remember that DeKeyser was undrafted and is a rookie. Crazy. Lashoff has looked very good too.

Agreed. And his one-handed crap can be infuriating when he loses the puck from a simple stick check. He needs to be strong on the puck. Not sure if it's increased minutes or what but Kindl hasn't looked very good tonight.

Bert maybe hasn't been great but he's had a couple good deflections that just hit Talbot. He didn't see them.

Smith with the tape to tape turnover and flatfooted. Damn! so close for Dekeyser!

Miller! That line has been the best one tonight.

Kindl really needs to stop with the lobs up ice and take the time to make a good first pass.

Hey Franzen is credited with a shot on goal! When did that happen? It broke his 6+ periods without a single SOG.

Agreed. I hate that call. Guys hit each others sticks like that all game. 99% of the time they're hanging on to their stick like they should be.

    What's Killing Our Offense?

Having watched a lot of LA games it is striking how much team speed the Wings lack compared to them, especially when exiting the zone. And it's not so much that the Kings have blazing speed (they have a handful of guys who are fast) as it is I think the Wings are on the slower end of the spectrum. It's like I was saying in another thread. They no longer have enough skill for puck possession to be as effective as it was, but they lack the speed and size to dump and chase. I think it's where the mishmash of 3rd and 4th line particularly stands out. On a lot of teams that's the fast, crash bang line that keeps the puck deep in the corners and will throw it out front for a good chance. On the Wings it's just inferior versions of the top two lines.

    Sabres' Scott offered in-person hearing.

On the angle from behind you can see that impact isn't until Scott is past Eriksson's right hip and right shoulder. He caught a piece of Eriksson's shoulder and also his head, but the mantra from the NHL has been that you need to make solid body contact. Scott didn't do that. The NHL has examples of legal and illegal hits on their website that clearly explain the standard. It's pretty simple. You can't just fly by and clip a guy in the head and shoulders. You have to make solid contact to his body.

It's ok. I'm confident in my memory of watching hockey for 30+ years. You obviously have a very different perception of it than I do. There's really no further point in discussing it.

    What's Killing Our Offense?

I feel like the Wings have been stuck in this weird place for the last few seasons. Not enough talent to play puck possession, not enough speed and size to play dump and chase. They've been stuck in between. I'm not sure what their system or identity is.

    What's Killing Our Offense?

Franzen 2 goals in 11 games (both on the PP and both against the Avs) Weiss 2 goals in 11 games Alfredsson 1 goal in 11 games Those are the top 3 guys the Wings need producing after Z and Dats, and they have 5 goals between them. Then throw in our $3 million fourth liner Samuelsson and it's more capspace that was supposed to be providing goals but isn't. As I mentioned in the GDT, Franzen hasn't even managed a shot on goal in the last two games. His last SOG was against the Coyotes.

    Sabres' Scott offered in-person hearing.

Based on the hit alone and the NHL's fondness on this number lately I could see it being 5 games. Taking into consideration Scott is not a hockey player and already got a phonecall from Shanny for jumping Kessel in the preseason, I'm hoping it's at least 10. As Bourne points out on his blog (he played against Scott in college), John Scott had 126 games, 19 points, and 347 PIMs. In college. http://blogs.thescore.com/nhl/2013/10/24/on-the-regroup-john-scott-suckers-loui-eriksson-and-daniel-alfredsson-faces-the-senators-for-the-first-time/#more-86907

If we're talking about the same kinds of hits, no they haven't. I can't tell if we're arguing semantics or not. I'm talking about hits where a player explodes upwards, his skates sometimes leaving the ice at impact, and a lot of energy is directed towards the head, often without much contact to the body. That became acceptable as a clean hit. There may have been occasional hits like that but it certainly wasn't the prevalent hitting style like it had become. So no, I'm notf****** kidding myself. On the other hand if you're talking about flying elbows and dirty hits or just headshots in general, then of course those have always been around to some degree. The game was much dirtier back in the day than it is now.

10/23 GDT: Senators 6 at Red Wings 1

According to the box scores on NHL.com and ESPN.com he didn't register one, which makes over 6 periods without a shot on goal.

Franzen hasn't registered a shot on goal since the game against Phoenix. Tough to score goals that way.

Yes, your three youtube clips have convinced me. I'm not sure exactly what your point is here. Even in the hits with elbows, the guys skates are on the ice and there's pretty good body contact. But an elbow will always be an elbow. I wasn't saying that was a new phenomenon. But for those who complain about hitting being taken out of the game, clean hitting used to be much more skates on the ice with solid body contact. But the trend of exploding up like Kronwall used to do and prevalence of fly by hits is a relatively recent development to the NHL. Maybe the past 15 years or so?
