So the consensus on Shanny's #14 is a no?
haroldsnepsts replied to unsaddleddonald's topic in General
No, the admonishment could have been avoided if you could manage to disagree with someone without going the extra mile to say their argument has no value or merit. It's really all opinions here. If you disagree, disagree. But to repeatedly state something someone says has no value or merit is basically an insult. -
So the consensus on Shanny's #14 is a no?
haroldsnepsts replied to unsaddleddonald's topic in General
Just because you disagree with something doesn't mean it is without validity or merit. His first point was that there are retired jerseys of Wings players who played on other teams. He's correct. If you restrict it to modern era then as you pointed out the two examples in Lidstrom and Yzerman played their entire career in Detroit. As far as I know though, there is not any official or even unofficial standard or one that's been spoken of by the organization. The two last players worthy of jersey retirement played their entire career in Detroit. That doesn't make it a rule. -
RIP As a kid I watched the Wings practice in Oak Park a handful of times. One practice a friend and I were near the corner, watching players through the glass. A puck shoots off the glass right by our head scaring the crap out of both of us. We look over and Shawn Burr is there smiling at us as he scoops up another puck and skates away. Good player, and he always seemed like a great lockerroom guy and a goofball like Ozzy or Drapes were.

What is it with people? The same could be said about the tone in your post. He said he heard it but didn't say where. For several posts he was evasive as to the source. He could've heard it on TSN, which is a lot more credible than from a friend. It's not unreasonable to ask for a source. People share links here to get the latest and greatest about happenings in hockey. The idea is also so people don't just randomly make things up to win arguments. If upon first being asked he had said it was from a friend, the thread wouldn't be derailed like it is now. Now let's all try to get back on topic about Brunner.
-
It's not about seeking approval. If you make a claim like that about someone's contract, there needs to be a some source so people can evaluate the statement. Otherwise the site will be awash in people making up whatever they want about players. At least now that you admitted "you heard it" people can better decide how likely it is to be true. In the future if you make claims like this without any reference to where you got the info, it will be deleted.

Devils sign Jagr (1 yr deal, financial terms not yet disclosed)
haroldsnepsts replied to TheDetroitRedWings's topic in General
While Jagr's loyalty is obviously in question, by this point in his career his preparation and work ethic has been well established. As for Ovie, he's an extreme talent, but unless he changes his attitude I'd be amazed if he's still competitive at 41 yrs old. -
You didn't, but the post you responded to and bulk of the conversation of this thread is regarding concussions. I figured that by "better" helmets you meant better regarding concussion prevention.
-
They do? I know about the Messier project, if that's what you're referring to, but as far as I know there's still no concrete evidence that shows any helmet will prevent concussions. They' claim it "provides maximum protection from high impact linear forces." That doesn't necessarily mean they do any better against concussions, and more to the point "maximum protection" is a pretty meaningless phrase. If they start getting the data that shows it actually helps, I think the players would come around. Especially because the Messier project is now owned by Bauer.

Khan's take on the Brunner situation: http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2013/07/red_wings_questions_readers_wo.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+detroit-redwings+(Detroit+Red+Wings+-+MLive.com)

Doesn't sound like Cleary is coming back, but according to Khan the 3 year $3 mill was offer wasn't true. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2013/07/red_wings_questions_readers_wo.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+detroit-redwings+%28Detroit+Red+Wings+-+MLive.com%29

Even if Fleury was born in the US, it'd be ridiculous if they took him over Quick, Miller, Anderson, Howard, and probably at least 5 other goalies.
-
Well that's a different question about roster, not about Tootoo's salary. I agree with DickieDunn that he doesn't bring more, just different. They can kill penalties and are much more defensively responsible. In the regular season Miller was our top PK forward in terms of TOI per game, Emmerton was 2nd. In the playoffs it was Miller, Emmerton, with Eaves at 4th. Freeing up Datsyuk's and Zetterberg PK minutes while still having a good penalty kill is already more valuable than the handful of staged fights Tootoo brings. In terms of roster though I do think they have too many guys who are too similar on the bottom lines. It'd be great to bring more toughness, even if it means giving up a little bit of PK talent. And don't get me wrong I like that the Wings have guys who will hit and drop the gloves, but it doesn't change that compared to other guys with similar skills, Tootoo was overpaid by Holland.
-
It's also not his agent's fault for trying to get his client the best contract. It's Holland's for overpaying for a 4th liner. Tootoo's TOI may have changed, but his skillset didn't.
-
For starters, it's Puck Daddy. But he also acknowledges it's a pretty insane idea and defends it by referring to Quick's numbers in a lockout-shortened season where Quick was returning after back surgery. Quick has a Stanley Cup, a Conn Smythe, insane playoff numbers the last couple seasons, and was the third goalie in the 2010 Olympics. I think Howard is great and am happy he's the Wings starter, but it would be shocking if he started over Quick. I really think it's Quick's to lose. Unless they go with Miller because of his 2010 performance. There's also the off chance Jimmy doesn't even make the team. Other guys make it sound like Schneider, Anderson and Howard are in competition for the final spot.
-
Miller was named Olympic MVP and carried Team USA to the gold medal round. Unless he completely falls apart this season I'd be surprised if he was lower than 2nd. And a Howard Quick tandem seems very unlikely. The job will probably be Quick's to lose, then Miller, then Howard.
-
I think it is. Especially for 3 years, his price should've been lower. He's a hard hitter but often takes himself way out of the play to make those hits. And it's nice to have someone who fights, though it seemed like most of his were meaningless staged scraps that weren't even for retribution. I'm not a fan of Carcillo either but he just signed a 1 year deal for $825,000 and the most he's ever been paid is $1.08 mill. He's just the first reference point that came to mind, but what does Tootoo bring that warrants a million dollars more?
-
I'm not a Tootoo fan which I'm sure is part of it, but still he has a very specific role and skillset. And 3 years at $1.9 million for what he brings 9-12 minutes a night is overpayment to me.

I'm unable to find the article again but I had read somewhere that when he was first hired he came out guns blazing with suspensions. After a few months of it though GM's, the NHLPA and people within the NHL were angry at him for the level of suspensions and he got a talking too. Ever since then it went back to the wheel of justice. It may be me wanting to believe it because I've always like Shanny, but it sounds like they got to him.
-
It seems like most teams are taking their time signing guys at this point, but based on what Holland has already said it doesn't sound like Brunner is a possibility even if the Wings were to clear a roster spot.

New NHL divisions, names, and playoff format
haroldsnepsts replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Neither of those are true. Sure there's bandwagoners, just like there's been with the Wings. But the Kings have had a long suffering fan base. And they've been in or around the top half of the league in attendance for a decade. Which is pretty good for a non-traditional hockey where all you hear about is the Lakers. According to Forbes they're franchise value is #10 in the league (Detroit is #6) and in spite of their high payroll are turning a profit. I don't know that I trust Forbes on the exact $ numbers for franchises but they're probably in the ballpark with teams relative to one another. Unless they've got some financial issue i've not heard about, they're nowhere near like the Coyotes. -
link? Why can't you split up 3 NY teams? Pitt and Philly don't need to be in the same division. Of course there will be some imbalance and some teams will be at least moderately unhappy with it. That doesn't make it a bad plan. But to put the two southernmost teams in the whole league in the same division as all the northeast teams is pretty ridiculous. This restructuring it's pretty clear which teams hold more sway with the league.
-
If you're referring to my comments on Florida's division placement, I don't recall saying it was the end of the world. But they definitely got screwed. Out west it's an inevitability that teams will have long travel. In the east that's less the case. The Florida teams closest division rival is further away than at least 5 or 6 teams in other divisions. Doesn't this map seem a little odd?
-
The league couldn't just use North, East, South, etc because it would call too much attention to how badly the NHL screwed the Florida teams in the realignment. The two southernmost teams in the league are in what is essentially the Northeastern division.

Fedorov: ‘We had the chance’ to bring Datsyuk to KHL
haroldsnepsts replied to Opie's topic in General
Fedorov would be an idiot not to reach out to Datsyuk and make an offer. It's not like he did anything underhanded. Even in the article he's professional and completely understanding of Datsyuk's decision. I don't get what people are up in arms about, other than already having a chip on their shoulder about Fedorov. -
Exactly. In general they need to get players back to hitting the way they used to. Skates on the ice, solid contact to the body. No leaping, no exploding up, no fly-by hits. They need to set a clearer standard on hits from behind too. There will be a lot of aggravating calls we fans think are soft using the current standard, but eventually players should get the idea hitting a guy in the numbers is something you can't do. You have to let up. They also need to crack down on ALL blows to the head, like elbows. It's crazy that they're making this huge effort with hits but not elbows. A hit that involves contact with the head is at least usually an attempt at a hockey play. An elbow to the head is a clear cheapshot that should be simple to differentiate from a hockey play. It probably would be some ugly hockey at times as players and refs adjust, but hopefully would preserve hard hitting while helping to protect players heads. It's a good point. because in that same time frame haven't they set clearer protocols for concussions? And there's certainly more awareness of it now than a few years ago.
