Vinny's not exactly a defensive dynamo either, and Kovalchuk has been a better, more consistent scorer in the NHL. Seems pretty straightforward to me. You can pick on his lack of playoff appearances, but I'd say perennially being a top 10 scorer in the league is doing your part to get to the postseason. Thrashers are just consistently a bad team.

And, moreover, it's only ONE game.

If he's not, he's still much more consistent. Since his breakout year in '04, Kovalchuk has finished in the top 10 in league scoring four out of five times. In that same span, Vinny has only done this twice. EDIT: So yeah, Kovalchuk.

Being unfathomably clutch and dominating the National Hockey League. -
My guess is when the playoffs roll around Maltby will find himself spending a lot of time in the pressbox. Helm will be here all season and Abdelkader will be the first call up for injury. Babcock leans towards the vets, but even he benched Chelios in Finals in '08 when it was clear he wasn't up to the task. I love Maltby to death for everything he's given to this team but he's totally useless now, so I hope Mike will do the right thing when the time comes.

No. Waiver rules depend on the player's age, when they first signed an NHL contract, stuff like that. Two-way contract simply changes a player's salary based on where he is.

He was shoved from behind and knocked off balance. That doesn't make the hit illegal or anything, but it wasn't a case of him being careless. He got tag-teamed into the freight train. -
Teams weren't exactly kicking down the door to sign Dan Cleary or Mikael Samuelsson either. I'm not a huge fan of Willy or Bert, but for the amount they're getting paid they have good value, with enough upside that we can wait and see if they turn out to be another genius move by Holland.

I'm no Williams fan, but the body of work you're judging thus far is two periods of one preseason game. -
