He was o'fer on the goals, neither were particularly dangerous. Didn't see much work overall, wouldn't call that a very good game.

It would have been fine to just lose the game, but to lose it on a blown call is infuriating even though it doesn't matter.

Typical call-happy referees. Beautiful defensive play, rung up for a penalty shot. Aaaannnd a goal.

Johan Franzen signs extension, 11 years

His cap hit, which is what's important, will remain the same until the contract expires.

Ben Eager, some no talent jobber that always scores on the Wings.

Probably nothing, just giving him a breather.

Calling a Datsyuk natural hattie in the third.

Whole lotta nothing in this one. Meaningless game is meaningless.

Johan Franzen signs extension, 11 years

I'll give him credit for the 27 + playoffs last year and give him two good seasons back to back. He's a good triggerman and he has his own bag of tricks he reaches into now and again, he'll probably keep scoring, especially playing with Pavel or Hank. If he falls off the face off the Earth it'll be a pretty huge miscalculation by management then.

I must've missed the part where the universe was flipped upside down and Chelios is playing forward.

$4M for a perennial 30-40 goal guy is probably underpayment in this NHL. I'm good with the cap hit, the length is a bit of a calculated risk. It's just like the Hank thing; in the last years of these monster contracts, when he's old and less effective or even totally ineffective the Wings are still on the hook for the money.

    Awesome Downey Interview

I guess the old Downey thread got torpedoed or I'd have put it there, but this interview is worth your time.

4/9 GDT: Predators 4 at Red Wings 3 (SO)

Yeah, yeah, the playoff upset boogeyman is out there like always. It will either happen or it won't; nobody knows the way it's gonna be.

    Helm and Leino will play

Mike has said before that Helm has earned a spot in the playoffs when he was sent down last time. He reserves the right to change his mind, of course, but I suspect Kopecky or Maltby will find themselves on the bench next week. Leino ought to be up, I think he might find himself in the pressbox until somebody starts being B-team, but I like his odds of seeing playoff ice time.

    Awesome Downey Interview

The lot of you are bad, and should feel bad. All I wanted to do was share this nice article about this nice man with you nice folks, and instead, I have brought ruination upon our world.

Pavel Datsyuk builds case for MVP

GWG is not a very trustworthy statistic. Tonight, no player got the GWG, but if a Pred had, he wouldn't have been deserving of it as Jason Arnott, whose goal was clearly the most meaningful. I don't know of any stat that can measure clutchness or whatever in any real way.

    Hey man, nice shot.

    Marian Hossa Injury

When they showed the replay on FSN it looked like he might have twisted his ankle. EDIT: Okay, Mike says groin. "He hurt his groin a little bit," Babcock said. "I don't know how severe or anything like that." Also here.

Anyone else approve of tonights play?

I thought they looked good, and would have won handily but for Lidstrom's mistake. If it makes anybody feel better, if this was a playoff game they might still be playing right now.
  24. Heroes of Hockeytown

4/9 GDT: Predators 4 at Red Wings 3 (SO)

The turning point was, oddly enough, Lidstrom's ill-advised pass. Everything was well in hand before that gaffe. The other goals went in because they went in, and I won't ever argue with three goals for, so the whole thing basically hinged on that. All things considered you gotta give Nick a pass for that one.

Pavel Datsyuk builds case for MVP

The Wings seem strong enough that they would be able to survive the loss of any one player -- even their best player -- and still finish well within the playoff picture, with guys like Hudler and Leino stepping up to fill in. The team wouldn't be as good, but it wouldn't need to be to get to the playoffs. Or, if we assume Pavel wasn't even a Wing to begin, that's $6.7M in cap space they're looking at.
