Good pace to this on early. Difference is Detroit is missing the net or having their shots blocked and Washington is getting stuffed by Conklin. Pretty good up and down hockey, though.

Wings Recall Abdelkader, Send Downey Down
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to 40#1Fan's topic in General
Might be because Stevie and Kenny basically promised him he'd get another shot in the bigs. Aaron himself said that if this was the only game he played all year, it was worth it. -
"Grrrr, Mike helped shape me into a successful NHL player."

Wings Recall Abdelkader, Send Downey Down
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to 40#1Fan's topic in General
I'm sure what he'd really like to do is see what guys like Abdelkader and Leino can do in the big league. He has that opportunity with Stuart on IR and Hank and Homer dinged up to get as many guys into the lineup as he can, so he can and see how they stack up. Guys that might actually be of service to the Wings come spring. I appreciate the effort Downey gave, he's been a trooper for the Wings and the Griffs and he did a fine job against Dallas, hitting and giving the team some energy and tried his damnedest to knock some guys block off, but the season isn't made or broken on his efforts -- not even that very game was. He deserves a spot up here (certainly over Kopecky), but that's not how it goes in the cap world. I'd rather the Wings use this opportunity to test the kids than spend it by putting in Downey for a few minutes a game. -
Probably all those things, and more. I'm sure Mr. Ilitch cares about ratings; but if Some Guy From Upstate doesn't want to watch the Wings anymore, that doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever. If the Wings are onto something and they're winning, then it's a good day to be a Wings fan. As for the usual "toughness" argument, I agree the Wings haven't been nearly as gritty this season as last, but I'll wait to deliver my verdict on all that after the season is over. I, for one, happen to enjoy watching the Wings play the way they do when they're on their game. My worldview allows for me to enjoy more than one style of hockey -- I appreciate the games and systems many teams play.

The Official Aaron Downey Discussion Thread
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to Esquire's topic in General
You're right. Doubtful that Mike would bench Maltby or Draper. It's probably press box time for Downey. -
The replay they showed on the broadcast definitely showed a no-goal. The net coming off didn't factor into it, the puck never went in. There was a stick that came into the net, and the black tape on it gave a very convincing illusion of a puck on first review, but further looks made everything clear.

A solid second line center that's young and responsible defensively isn't anything to sneeze at, so I wouldn't dismiss this out of hand, but I don't know what quality goalies the Wings would be able to get for Flip. Which is to say, are you just speaking hypothetically, or realistically?

If the Cards put their money where their mouths are and win the big one this weekend, I might be willing to give them the credit they're looking for. If not, they'll always just be 9-7 to me. With that said, I'm pulling for the Steelers.
-
That seemed to me to be a complete thought, rather than a list of illegal ways to win faceoffs.

Franzen isn't much of a playmaker (as can be observed by his large goals-assists ratio). If he isn't getting set up to let it go, he's not going to contribute much offensively. I can appreciate the role he has as a triggerman in this offense.

The Official Aaron Downey Discussion Thread

Had a great game, no complaints from me. Would've had a scrap if the refs hadn't jumped in for no reason. I'd rather bench Kopecky and keep Downey in the line up Saturday when they give Leino a look. -
He has the occasional game where he is seemingly capable of being a #4 Dman. It evaporates just as quickly as it materializes.

The jobbing from O'Halloran I'm sure has left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. But the fact is the Wings dug themselves a massive hole in the first, and better to come out and at least play a little competitively than risk things like an unprofessional referee killing your chances. Suspect defense and PKing (and yes, the whipping boy did not have a good outing), shaky goaltending, and utter game mismanagement by Mike at the end make this loss. EDIT: I'll say though, those five minutes of the second (up until said jobbing) was the best hockey I've seen all season.

At this point, Babcock wants Conklin to come off for the extra skater to recoup a two goal deficit with a minute to go. When he had Kopecky out there more than Hudler, and was putting Kopecky and Draper on the ice with as little as three minutes left in the game to do... something? This is pretty blatant game mismanagement by Babcock.
-
Well, there's yer ballgame.
-
Doesn't seem like there's enough time left to get it done. And there goes Draper over the boards....? C'mon, Mike.
-
I don't know what Kopecky and crew are doing out there except killing time the Wings don't have.
-
He also fed Lilja for that goal.
-
Franzen just had his bell rung, was all.
-
Oh yeah, don't show the goddamned replay or anything. Nice ******* job FSN.
-
Egads, let's double shift Datsyuk and glue the fourth line to the bench.
-
Awww, they're shuttin' down threads about ol' Dano. The man is deserving of our contempt.
-
Hahaha, nice Wiki vandalism, guys.

Not only was Homer pushed, but he didn't make contact with Turco until after the puck had gone past him. The contact was meaningless twice. Regardless, the last five minutes of that period was crazy. Great fun.
