"I don't even want to think about it"
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to Octopus's Garden's topic in General
This isn't really a good analogy. Steve's role on the team had been diminishing rapidly for two or three seasons before he retired; he was still a good player when he left (you might remember he went on a great run from December of the '06 season and into the playoffs where he certainly didn't look like 40 year old with a bum knee) but was already well on his way to being replaced, and very adequately so, but Datsyuk and Zetterberg. No other defenseman on the team is as good as Lidstrom; few defensemen in the league, even today, are as good as Lidstrom. He is the motor that powers the big red machine, and he does it on all fronts. I don't believe his departure will be the end of the Wings -- far from it -- but it will be unlike anything most Wings fans have yet experienced. -
Homer's slashing penalty and Z's disallowed goal
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to Namtaru's topic in General
It might be violating the letter of the law, but that's not how it's enforced. That very same line change is completed dozens of times a game, by all teams, without penalty. -
Y tu tambien, mi amigo. Your timing -- poor though it is -- can hopefully bring some cheer to a grim scene. We are as we once were, the dynamic duo, the Zetterberg to my Datsyuk. As for Bob, he does indeed stoically watch over us, even now a monument to a past era. But we will live to see those days again, when our hope is renewed and our strength is returned to us. Go Wings!, I say.

Well look who decided to show his face around these parts. What have you got to say for yourself, mister?

Who would you most blame for a round 2 loss?
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to Zetts's topic in General
I don't know if I could name any one overarching cause. If we break it down game by game, though: In Game 1 the blown call on Franzen was atrocious and cost the Wings the game. In Game 2 the refereeing wasn't great again but the Wings managed to skate to a 3-3 tie when all of the sudden Nick's stick breaks and the game-winner is in the net -- what can you do? Nothing about either the officiating or the integrity of a stick, that's just rotten bad luck. Howard is squarely to blame for tonight's loss, though. The Sharks have played the Wings very well but I feel like the Wings deserved a win in one of those first two games and didn't get it. Unfortunately, deserves got nothing to do with it. You win or you lose. -
And unlike when he scored the key game-winning goal in the Stanley Cup Finals the year before that helped give the Wings the advantage they needed to close out the series.

WCSF Game 3 GDT: Sharks 4 at Red Wings 3

Tough to criticize anyone but Howard on the goal, but Ericsson was the guy who was just kind of coasting and floating near Couture instead of trying to check him. Don't know what he was thinking. -
Brett Lebda in, Lilja scratched
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Lebda had a pretty good game, I thought. But he only ended up playing 9 minutes and somehow Ericsson got 14. -
I don't feel that Wings are as poor a team as the series deficit indicates, but sometimes that's just how it goes. Perhaps they want to win one to avoid the indignity of being swept, but no matter. The time off will hopefully do them good. I don't think the team needs a lot of work, especially with Hudler coming back, provided Lidstrom doesn't retire.

WCSF Game 3 GDT: Sharks 4 at Red Wings 3
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Oh well, this one's over. Ericsson was a real trainwreck in these playoffs but this was one of the few times he actually got burned on a play because of it. And obviously Howard has a lot of work to do. Honestly the Wings have played better than a team being stuck in a 3-0 hole, but they were on the wrong side of all the breaks in the first two games. This game was certainly lost by their own doing though. -

What a miserable way to end the period. Pavelski's line is just unstoppable. -

Great save. -

I initially thought that he wacked it in with his stick, that was a much weirder goal in slow motion. -

No doubt about that one. Nice play by Franzen. -

Before the playoffs I'd say that was a goal, but now it's consistent with the calls they've made in the postseason. Tough break. -

I'm leaning to no goal. Similar play to the Sedin one. -

Well, if they're going to get called even for doing absolutely nothing at all, they may as well get their money's worth. Start laying out the BC two handers and give them something to actually put you in the box for. -

Didn't take long for the screwjob to start. -

I don't know what the 4th line and 3rd pairing are doing out against the Pavelski line... -
Such penalties are reserved for when noted offenders like Darren Helm lose an edge.
-
I don't live in Sweden so it's no inconvenience to me, I'd keep on keeping on.
-
It's a little late for them to be getting on the ball about this. No amount of reviewing is going to reverse a 2-0 series hole. The games were close enough where the Wings could have lost even without all the penalties and nonsense; it's a real tightrope they're going to have to walk to get this series at even. But I do hope they tighten up the officiating, every little bit helps.

Will Malkin Ever Develop a Fedorov Complex?
Heroes of Hockeytown replied to Canadian_Yzerman_Fan's topic in General
Datsyuk is a flashier player and a better stick handler than Fedorov, but skating is a skill and even though Pavel is a very good skater, Fedorov crushes him in this department. Fedorov's top gear was higher and his ability to accelerate to that top gear was absolutely world-class. Plus, Fedorov was a more natural goal scorer but still a brilliant playmaker. Have to give this one to Sergei overall. -
A good default position is to assume everyone is ailing in some way this time of year.

WCSF Game 2 GDT: Red Wings 3 at Sharks 4

Poor choice of words on my part. The good news is with last change they'll be able to glue Lidstrom to Pavelski, hopefully he can do a better job of keeping him in check. Stuart and Kronwall have not handled that responsibility particularly well.
