He'll either retire a Red Wing in another couple of seasons, or jump ship now and then do a farewell GBCW Toronto year in the 2008-2009 season. P.S. I don't live in Toronto - is it true that FAN590 claims that Toronto is going to sign every free agent - especially guys originally from Toronto - every year?

Yep. A lot of posturing and a lot of wild rumors. I'll be interesting to see what really happens. My guess is that he stays here for one season $4 mil or less. They might even give him the "C" to get him to stay. Heh. (p.s. there is no truth to that - it is just my guess. Next thing I know, Eklund will use it as justification to claim that someone close to Shanahan has said he's been named Captain of the Wings, and that he pushed Stevie out the door to retire! LOL)

Dude, when you posted that as its own thread (before you edited it to add "via a Montreal rumor"), it sounded like it was a confimed deal you heard on the radio. Please be more careful and clear, K? The other metro-area meetups we've had have been in the Royal Oak area, so I think it's a great idea to go a little further south for our next adventure! However, if da Godfaddah doesn't want to travel very far since his wife is soon to give birth, perhaps we should stick to something closer to his neck of the woods this time. I think Eklund is a superhero! His name is "Captain Obvious". His modus operandi: publish a lot of really predictable guesses of what might happen, but make them salacious enough to get attention. If only 5% of your "predictions" come true, you're a success! (I think he does wear a nifty cape and tight spandex, too). EDIT: on second thought, maybe we should call him "the Miss Cleo of Hockey".

Rumors ahoy! Sorry, I don't believe one word that comes out of Eklund's mouth after all of his claims during the lockout season. Maybe some of this will come true, maybe not.

I'm finally catching my first match of this tourney... the men's final! I saw a little bit of the end of yesterday's semi w/Nadal, but that's it. This is quite an interesting final. We're halfway through the third set, and I have no idea who is gonna win. It's not terrific tennis (I guess it is over 90 degrees F out there), but it is very interesting to watch. I'm hoping both players will really pick up their game in the 4th set - especially Federer. He's not moving around quickly at all, and if he doesn't move his feet more, I don't think he's gonna win.

I believe they just took this season's team photo last week. It likely hasn't been released. Your best bet would be to try the www.detroitredwings.com site, or to call the Red Wings organization in the morning (which I believe will be past your deadline). Sorry!

I went to the game last night vs. Chicago, and I saw a lot of really cool Blackhawks jerseys being worn at the game. Old ones, newer ones, etc. I also noticed a lot of the white winged wheel Wings jerseys, and a few of the red ones being worn, too. I also saw one guy with one old-style jersey. It got me thinking. I think the Red Wings should change their jerseys. Before you fly off the handle at this suggestion, let me give you a few good reasons. 1. It's a great marketing move to sell more merchandise and make more money for Ilitch. He needs to build a new arena, his businesses are expanding, and he could use a lot more cash. If they sell it, the Red Wings fans will buy it. 2. Yzerman is probably going to retire at the end of this season. If they unveil a new jersey now (and Stevie's name is on it), it will sell a LOT. This would be the perfect time to unveil a new style of jersey - shortly before the playoffs when your most famous player is most likely going to retire at the end of the season. I believe Yzerman's jersey is the most sold in the NHL, perhaps in all sports. So, now is the time do do this. Like I said in #1, it's a brilliant way to sell a lot of merchandise. 3. The Winged Wheel is so old. When is the last time the jersey was redesigned? (NN, I'm sure you know, resident stat boy!) And honestly, so many people who aren't wings fans often ask me "what the heck is that logo anyway". I explain it's a winged wheel, and they think it seems kinda dumb. 4. Tying into #3, the winged wheel represents older Detroit - the motor city, when we were the headquarters of car manufacturing for the world. Detroit needs a new image, and has been moving toward a more diversified business climate than just "the big three". Getting rid of the winged wheel with something more modern that reflects Detroit would be great. I could give a few more reasons, but I think this gets the idea across. So, what do you think? Must be a Canadian thing. Never heard of that one. I figure, April Fool's is on a Saturday, pretty much the whole weekend is fair game. Traditionally, pranks are supposed to be performed before noon. Those done afterwards are supposed to bring bad luck to the perpetrator Never heard of that one. I think someone's embarassed that they fell for it.

Hahaha! Good one! The difficult thing was that we needed to make ridiculous propositions, but make it seem serious enough so you all didn't catch on. I can't believe you'd believe that I think the logo needs to be changed. Add colors like lime green or purple? And NN saying the winged wheel is "old-timey spokey wheel" and they should change the name of the team to be "The Detroit Wings"? OMG! BRTD and Vladdy16 saying to ditch the winged wheel & replace it with a Stanley Cup! Classic! SWF's suggested jersey as inspiration! Brilliant! HOCKEY MATTERS suggestion to put the winged wheel on the back & numbers on the front - ha! For giggles, take a look back at the thread and notice the posts by several "Community Supporters". There were so many great contributions to this prank, I didn't mention them all. Some were "for it", some "against it", and some were "swayed by the suggestions." Now, just to be very, very clear: several of us have privately discussed how annoying we think discussions about the need to change the Detroit Red Wings are. We hate the idea of a third jersey. We love our Red Wings. Hence, the prank. Again, this is a JOKE, people! There is no need to change the Wings uniforms, their logo, etcetera. (though I do think BRTD's idea for the padded tophats & tights ain't bad )

Wow. What did I miss while I was at work? Dang, I gotta make sure I'm not late for the next party. Today was great! It was fun to see "old friends" and meet new people face-to-face! Let's definitely plan another event in another month or so. Woo hoo, the Wings won, too!

That's a pretty good idea you have there, BetterRED. Now that I think more about it, I'm starting to wonder if the league would approve a jersey that has a drawing of Lord Stanley's cup on the front. Maybe there can be a logo on the front that somehow incorporates toughness/grit/determination/hard work, has a subtitle that says something like "the world's finest" or "a history of champions". Then keep the winged wheel on the shoulder/arm (sorta like that goofy foot that is on the Avs jerseys, but ours will look cool!) Keep brainstorming, people!

I'm intrigued. I think an update might be just the thing. There's been so many changes lately, Wings should keep up with the times. There's been some good ideas kicked around. I'm tied up today, but I'll try and come up with some designs tomorrow. I like the idea of incorporating silver and black into it a la Stanley Cup. Montreal and Toronto may have more Cups, but not recently. Wings are definately more closely associated with Lord Stanley than any other team in the league right now, and that doesn't seem to be changing any time soon. I'll post what I come with. Thanks, Muse! The only thing about silver, black, red, blue is that most teams have these colors. It's so Canada & USA. We need something added that's really vibrant. Maybe add a bit of purple, or orange, or teal or lime green... I dunno, come up with something really unique that will get people's attention. I wonder what Stevie Y's favorite color is. Does anyone know? Now that would be an excellent way to make this work. If he loves say, lemon yellow, you mix that in for the new Wings first jersey.

The "Wings" idea is pretty good, NN. We don't have a lot of tie to the air industry (unless you count Northwest Airlines), but it might be a cool idea to do something really different like that. I love your idea of a color scheme/theme that would tie in with the Stanley CUp & the tradition of winning it. The Detroit skyline or a sketch of the Renaissance Center isn't a bad idea, either. Hey, maybe GM would even contribute a little cash toward a new arena if Ilitch worked the Ren Cen into the logo. He needs a big financial backer to get a new stadium. I'm not an artist, so I can't draw anything up. I bet someone on here would be able to put some good ideas to paper, though. Vladdy16, maybe? When you look at some of the newer logos out there for the newer teams, they are pretty exciting. We need something more powerful. The red & white colors need some dressing up with brighter colors. I'm not talking about an alternate jersey, either. I think it should be the main, major new jersey. Otherwise, it won't sell as well.
