Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended
dragonballgtz replied to Matt's topic in General
Same deal here. He has a legal binding contract, he does not want to honor it so they can force him to play next year. This does not open up any loop holes all this does is enforce rules that are already in place. I don't even understand how you think this can open up loop holes. -

Like Matt_Attack said Yashin and Radulov. He has a legit legal NHL contract with the NYI now, they can force him. -

Nope now he might be in a worse spot. Possible stuck with NYI for all of next year. -

So he knew the risks and lost with the gamble. Tell NYI that you need time to get ready, play about 10-15 games and look for a better team next year. Sounds like sour grapes that he didn't get what he wanted out of this situation. Next year Nabby don't price yourself out of the hands of contending teams and you will get more contract offers. -

Nope. What 11.8B says: And since his contract does not take affect until after the waiver process is completed it has no baring on which team he ends up with during that time. EDIT: I take to long to type -

What do you mean to much control? He left the NHL last year because he wanted to much money. If he had lowered his price tag he would be playing in the NHL right now and with the team of his choice. OMFG you just did not compare this crap Nabokov is pulling to Rosa Parks :hysterical: Nope. He did what I am sure many other GMs did and put a claim on him. If respect was so big in the NHL than RFA wouldn't receive contract offers from other teams and other players in the past wouldn't of been picked off waivers. -

Was that Hollands true motivation behind this signing? To kill his career, some sort of payback for knocking us out of the playoffs. -
favre has one sure it's not two but one ring is good. Also Favre has a record that will go down as the one of the hardest to break.

Then he shouldn't of priced himself out of the NHL. If he wanted to stay in the NHL from the get go he knew that GMs didn't want to pay him what he was asking for and he didn't want to drop his price tag. So what happens he goes over to Russia doesn't want to play there any more because of family issues (that's fine family is important). But now he has to clear waivers and is not in 100% control of his team selection, tough! If it was so important for him to win the Cup he would of taken less money to stay in the NHL with a contender -

However now the NHL is saying if he does not report and the NYI choose to suspend him he has to fulfill the contract next full NHL season. It is better for him to show up and deal with it than to gamble again and play what could seem like forever for him next year. He is not getting any younger as well. I am sure Nabokov regrets signing the contract now. Let's hope he doesn't blame Holland for talking him down to such a low price and being a one year deal. EDIT: Multiple edits -

A player's caliber should not and should never have any bearing on any rule. That's like giving Crosby extra treatment or saying if Crosby gets hit the player giving the hit should get an automatic penalty. You don't know what an extra win can do for the young guys confidence that are currently with the Islanders. Hell it might get them going for all we know (which is highly unlikely). According to the NHL he now has an obligation to show up and be part of the NYI team with the contract he signed knowing what could happen. -

It is not unreasonable. He just didn't like how everything played out and is mad about it. If anything this will only make players that are in Europe more cautious in coming over during the mid season. They will see how any contract they sign is an open contract for any team to grab them. For whatever reason they leave a European league in mid season just wait until the next NHL to come back. That way they have more control on which team they will play for. I thought the whole point of them sitting out was to get cap relief? A loophole sort of thing. In a way sure but he knew the rules. When he signed the contract is was basically a open contract that had Nabokov's name on it with a blank space where an NHL team name should be at. I have no doubt my mind that Holland told Nabby the risks of this contract signing. -

How does this show the true colors of the NYI management team? If anything it shows the true colors of Nabokov. Again he knew what could happen when he signed. Things didn't go according to plan and now he is the one bitching about how it came out and NYI are to blame? What a load of crap! If he didn't like the risks he shouldn't of signed a contract. What unspoken side of things? If that was true St. Louis would've gotten their guys last year. Or whoever it was that lost the 2 players to waivers. -

Considering that a suspension also means no pay I think he wouldn't count. There is no ignorance on the Islanders part. They got him by the rules. We won't trade anybody to get him even if it came to that IMO. The whole point of trying to get Nabokov was to get him without giving anything up. -

For that type of cap hit and money it was basically a snow balls chance in hell the Wings were going to get him to begin with. But currently there is no way he is going to become a Red Wing this season. -

Now that is just stupid. It's one thing to suspend him so he doesn't play this year but to force him to play next year with NYI that's going overboard. Nabokov gambled (going to contender or bottom feeder) coming back to the NHL knowing that he would have to clear waivers and he could possibly play on any team and he lost that gamble. It' should be within the rights of the player to not show up and be suspended for the remainder of the regular season and be a UFA next year. In a way I can see why the league would hold up his contract like that but it's just aggravating to see the NHL force players to a team like that. No good could come from that with a forced player in the locker room. Hell he should of just skipped this NHL season all together and come back into the NHL next year no problems. -

I'm pretty sure he doesn't based on he doesn't get paid along with ANA doing it with Niedermeyer. -
I didn't watch the game completely but on the goal where Kane had the puck all day why didn't they just put him on his butt. I think it was Eaves that had a chance to hit him but he just played the puck and the rest is history.

He is also to old to build around. Maybe they just want to give the kids some confidence with a few more wins, not sure. -

Well this can work for or against Nabokov. He knows that last time he priced himself out of the NHL but with a lower cap hit people are willing to give him a chance. With the Islanders claiming him I guess they finally see the truth in that DiPietro isn't their savior and are in need of a true #1. Good luck with that drama Nabokov for the rest of the season. Considering it took the media a couple of days to make sense of the rules themselves I say we did pretty good on assumptions. -

Vokoun is way to expensive for this team. We would have to give up our depth in order to acquire him. -

I am not saying Osgood or Howard have been great as both have their own issues but good team defense would help out a lot in the goals against department. -

Bob McKenzie reports: -
The truth hurts sometimes I know. But once you realized he has outplayed Miller since his return it will all be OK.

I say more power to him if he wants to try again. I admire the passion he has to want to be able to play again. EDIT: I foresee Z doing the same thing but with back issues.
