Attn Cap Geeks...give me a scenario...

I would do 1st rounder, 2nd round pick, Stuart (his NTC is up), Ericsson for him. Or remove Ericsson for one of our higher end prospects like you suggested.

    NHL's Most Unbreakable Records

I'm gonna have to agree with you eva...Gretzky was great and fun to watch but when you watched Lemieux it was just like he was oozing talent. It was like you could even feel how soft he was with the puck when watching him. Fast, slick, softest hands I have ever seen.

    Wings should sign Paul Kariya

He has become more of a setup man recently. How much longer do you think his hips could hold on?

    NHL Rejects Kovalchuk's Contract

EDIT: If that was to happen even for past contracts then Zetterberg's cap hit will rise ~$1.6M and Franzen's ~$1.2M basically Hudler or Cleary

Didn't the owner of Montreal way way way back own another team and stack Montreal? I could of sworn I read that some where You beat me on that part...the magic of editing. I was typing it while you posted it

    NHL's Most Unbreakable Records

I know that plus minus is a team stat but +124 with 139 points scored that's freakish. Yep his 1,963 assist beats out Messier's point total of 1887. I laugh when sometimes Gretzky's assist total in a season would be more then the person that was second in points. That is some funny s*** right there.

    NHL Rejects Kovalchuk's Contract

What do you mean it's not comparable? All of these deal's have the same objective at the end of the day which is to lower the cap hit of a player by adding maybe years into a contract. Every team does benefit to a degree from those junk years as you put it as they now have a lower cap hit player so they have more "cap money" to play around with. Again all of this could of been avoided if the NHL would of stopped it at the DiPietro deal and set the expectation of what a real contract should be. You bring up a even better point. What if a player sign's a contract like this then gets a career threatening injury during the beginning of the contract life? Players can just try to get better and still collect money from possible playing a handful of games every year. I admit the owner is dumb for signing a contract like this in the first place but that is why I would think the NHL had a lockout season so the league can manage stuff like this from happening. They failed to do that with the contract that started all of this.

    NHL Rejects Kovalchuk's Contract

And this all could of been avoided if the league would of acted on the DiPietro deal. Stop contracts like this from ever happening in the first place and there is no issue and clear understanding between the NHL and NHLPA on what is a realistic expectation on players finishing out their contracts. EDIT: Why was hockey even stopped for a whole year for? The owners bitched that the players were making too much and now these same owners are giving players front loaded contracts just to sneak by the cap system they wanted in the first place. This is really just dumbness all around on both ends.

    Loophole

I still think they have no merit to stop this one. They let all those other I'm gonna play till 40+ year old deals be signed then there is nothing they can do. Some had injury history (Franzen) some play a hard game that will take its toll on the players body (Pronger). If they wanted to stop this they should of stepped up when DiPietro's deal was signed. It does not matter what happens to the last years in any of those contracts they are made to take advantage of the loophole in the CBA plain and simple. They failed to act and stop these contracts in the past so they cannot and should not be able to do it now.

    Kovalchuk Re-Signs with Devils

The league can disapprove this deal. Which at this point since they let all those other 10+ year players going into their 40s contracts they have no merit to stop it.
  18. dragonballgtz

    Loophole

Its too late for them to do that IMO. They let everyone else have their long contract's and some with a history of getting injured. If they try to do something about his contract then they would have to do something about every one of these 10+ year contracts.

    Kovalchuk Re-Signs with Devils

I don't think you understand my post. By you saying players play at 40 is becoming more common that is because they are taking care of themselves better. Most people back in the day you hit your 30s you were almost done 10 to 12 seasons were the norm. It is because people are taking care of themselves better with all the modern ways people train/heal they can play longer. The next step for athletes is to play into their mid to late 40s EDIT: Do I think Z, Franzen, Pronger, Kovie, Hossa etc will play out their contracts...

    Kovalchuk Re-Signs with Devils

Mikey when he tells his stories always said that hockey players from back in the day never really took care of themselves as athletes do now. Yeah they might not be as fast as their were, unless you were Mike Gartner type, but their bodies can take a few more years of hard athlete living. Oh yeah the Red Wings totally expect our long contract guys to fulfill their contracts. I mean they know Zetterberg's wonky back is gonna hold up and Franzen's body can handle all these knee surgeries and concussions.

    Kovalchuk Re-Signs with Devils

The flood gates opened up when Detroit started this trend. People are just now taking it into another extreme. I bet next round of CBA talks the league might try to stop this sort of thing.
