I don't think Detroit has any plans of trading Alfredsson. But seriously, you're right. No one is going to take Samuelsson unless it's part of a package that includes valuable players.
-
How do you figure Detroit has lost Sammuelsson? I'm happy with where things stand. I wasn't crazy about the Alfredsson signing, but if he's a replacement for Cleary then I'm all for it. I'm very happy about the Weiss signing as he was my free agent target out of the gate. Obviously, some other things will need to fall into place as Detroit - for all intents and purposes - has 16 forwards. Interesting days ahead, I imagine.

Obviously, this move is somewhat reactionary as well. They needed to make a big move after losing the face of their franchise.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Lots of action on UFA winger Dan Cleary. Wings still in the mix #$%!
-
In those terms, I reply with a resounding, "no thank you".

The terms of the new CBA do not allow for a 35+ contract to be "stashed" in the minors. It will still count against the salary cap.

signed Wings sign Alfredsson to 1-year, $3.5m deal (+$2m bonuses)

Capgeek's cap calculator has removed Alfredsson's bonus and shows Detroit as having $2.3 million in cap room left.
-
Just saw a picture of Weiss. He was an alternate. Jovanovski is their captain.

18 is available.

@NHLonTSN: Valteri Filppula signs with Tampa Bay - 5 years, $5 million per year. #TSN #NHL

We need a moratorium on Eklund rumors.

Wasn't his number 11? -
Hard to trade the rights of a player who was destined for free agency.
-
Regular, yes. Compliance, no.
-
No, the $2.3m total is with Alfredsson's bonus deferred. Based solely on number, they are above the cap. per Capgeek

How many former captains can a team add in one day? ..but I thought Cleary's replacement was Alfredsson.
-
At this point, I'm taking St. James with a grain of salt when it comes to these moves.
-
Samuelsson's absence would make everything a lot easier. Imagine still having $5m to work with.
-
A possibility that I don't know if anyone discussed. Perhaps Detroit brass was prepared, throughout Brunner's negotiation process, to give his spot to Tatar. The kid has certainly earned a place on the team.
-
This is really splitting hairs at this point, especially since we have no idea what the roster will actually look like come the season's start, but I'd prefer it to see Zetterberg and Datsyuk together with Alfredsson.
-
I think he'd be a good fit in Boston. Size and skill. A [very] poor man's Horton.

The Red Wings obtained plenty of "over the hill" guys back then. Or did you forget where the "Red Wings are old" narrative came from? Weiss has averaged 74 games a year since 02-03 and that's with the mere 17 games he played this year.
