The issue is that Filp couldn't hold down the second-line center position. Weiss can. He produces, wins face offs, and has done more with less than Filppula did in his time here. Also, Campbell might have scored more points, but I believe the point Crymson was making stemmed from the defensive side of things. Campbell is a sieve compared to Lidstrom. -
His cap hit had nothing to with his level of play at the AHL level.

The argument here is that Weiss has been on a much worse team and generally paired with lesser line mates than Filppula. -

I'm telling you - he wouldn't have. His play was equal to that of his AHL brethren in the Marlies / Griffins series. No need to take a flier on a reclamation project on defense. If Detroit acquires another defenseman it should be a legitimate upgrade.

Komisarek spent more time with the Marlies than the Leafs this year. He's one of the least desirable defensemen out there.

Well the article in question comes from the Boston Herald, though Deadspin warns you might want to take it with a grain of salt. As for their credibility? No reason to doubt it. They're highly reliable. -
Yeah, per Pierre LeBrun - Dallas is in the mix, too. @Real_ESPNLeBrun: Dallas and Detroit are in the mix for UFA winger Dan Cleary... I hope he signs in Dallas for multiple reasons, not the least of which is reading the posts lauding Nill for being a better GM than Holland for luring Cleary away.

Yeah, regardless of feelings about this deal - there are still lots of forwards. Something will have to give. Of course, the Wings (and any other team) can reside above the cap until September, so a trade could always be in the works.

If it is only a 1-year deal then I'd be more comfortable with it, I guess. Even though deals like this always feel unsavory to me. Modano shouldn't have left Dallas, Alfredsson should retire a Senator. *shrug

My concern is that, at $3.5, the Red Wings could sign someone to bring the youth, size, or speed the team needs. There's nothing wrong with Alfredsson as a signing, but that puts a dent in what's left and yes, age, money, and possible term are all concerns for any player who's over 35.
