    WITT REQUESTS TRADE FROM CAPITALS

http://spectorshockey.tripod.com/spectors_...de_rumours.html WASHINGTON POST: Tarik El-Bashir reports veteran Capitals defenceman Brendan Witt is requesting a trade to a contender. With the Caps in obvious rebuilding mode, Witt said he'd like to be dealt to a team with a chance to win now, and would prefer to be moved by the start of training camp in September. GM George McPhee tells the Post he intends to honour Witt's request.

    Rangers pursuing Gratton

Rangers pursuing Gratton TheFourthPeriod.com The Rangers have had ongoing discussions with free agent Chris Gratton directed at bringing him to Broadway, reports the New York Post. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound center is also supposedly drawing interest from the Toronto Maple Leafs, as well, but they appear to be zeroing in on signing Eric Lindros. Gratton has played in 851 career NHL games, accumulated 174 goals and 296 assists for 470 points, and 1,351 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted third-overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/nyr050811.html

Red Wings first tough guy invite to camp...

Yes, at some point he can. He has talent, he's not just an enforcer. He was very impressive when he went to camp with the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL team of NY Rangers). He's still very young, and the problem he's encountered has been his maturity at times, but he's a fireball and has been very impressive whereever he's been. I have no doubt he'll stick around if he has a good camp, Grand Rapids wants to field a tougher team and right now, they just have Amadio signed, it makes sense to get a guy like Big Snake. Thanks for infos Barnes!!!

    WITT REQUESTS TRADE FROM CAPITALS

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/det050809.html Wings have $10M to spend TheFourthPeriod.com With the arrival of goalie Chris Osgood, the Wings' roster is now marked at 15 and that leaves about $10 million left under the salary cap. According to the Detroit Free Press, more than half of that amount will go toward signing restricted free agent forwards Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg Restricted free agent defenseman Niklas Kronwall and forward Jason Williams also need to be signed. The Detroit News reports the Wings may be exploring the trade angle, as the club is also looking to get one more defenseman and two forwards. "I would think it's going to take all summer," Wings GM Ken Holland told the News of re-signing his RFAs. "But that's pretty normal (with restricted free agents)." Datsyuk's agent, Gary Greenstin, told the News that while nothing is on paper, his client has an understanding in place to play with Moscow Dynamo in Russia if an agreement isn't reached with the Wings.

Satan and Zhitnik may not return

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/buf050721.html Teams can begin negotiating with their free agents on Saturday, and the Sabres itching to get started. Defensemen Alexei Zhitnik and James Patrick are the team's only two unrestricted free agents and the Sabres would love to get both under contract as soon as possible. "If he's back in Buffalo, I'm sure he would like it," Zhitnik's agent Mark Gandler told the Buffalo News. "But my job is to get the best deal for him and make sure he's on a team that's contending and will give him the role he's used to." Zhitnik had a chance to sign with the Sabres last summer but opted to wait until a new CBA was reached. According to the News, Zhitnik's former agent, Serge Levin, claimed the Sabres had offered a four-year, $16 million deal. "I have no doubt we will get at least as much, counting the rollback," Gandler said. "So there's no regret yet. A lot of clubs would dearly like to have Alex, but teams need to see what the CBA is like and make a decision." Meanwhile, with such solid young talent as Tim Connolly and hot prospect Thomas Vanek, the Sabres may not extend qualifying offers to restricted free agents Miroslav Satan and Eric Boulton, the News reports, making them unrestricted. Satan would have made $5.25 million in 2004-05, and even with the 24% rollback the price might be prohibitive for a streaky player who likely would become an unrestricted free agent next summer anyway. On a lighter note, Sabres blueliner Dmitri Kalinin is expected to pick up his player option for the upcoming season. Options must be exercised by July 28, and Kalinin's agent, Jay Grossman, indicated his man would return to Buffalo. "I know Dmitri is looking forward to the opportunity of returning and playing in the NHL," Grossman told the News.

    B's could deal Thornton, Samsonov

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/bos050721.html Under the rules of the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement, Bruins' forward Joe Thornton and Sergei Samsonov can become unrestricted free agents next summer. As the Boston Globe reports, unless the Bruins sign both stars to multi-year deals, each player will be on target to leave town next July. Thornton will undoubtedly seek the maximum deal allowed in the new CBA, which is $7.8 million per year. His arbitration award last summer was $6.75 million, but that will be trimmed to a $5.13 million qualifying offer for 2005-06. If the Bruins aren't willing to give Thornton top dollar, and the Globe suggests they'll pass, then it makes little sense to keep Thornton on the books next season. Thornton's trade-value is currently at a high, and the Globe claims teams like Florida, Toronto and Detroit would love to get their hands on the 26-year-old. The Panthers certainly have the cap room to go after Thornton. Their GM, Mike Keenan, would covet Thornton like no other player, and the return package would have to start with defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. As for Samsonov, his price tag is not as high as Thornton's, but would likely need an annual salary in the $4 million to $4.5 million range to stay in Boston. He may also choose to walk next summer, and the Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks could jump on him. Samsonov's his wife is from Detroit, and his family lives there during the off-season. The Wings, however, may not have the financial resources to bring him Samsonov, or Thornton for that matter, but the Blackhawks have tons of spending room.

Bruins want free agents back TheFourthPeriod.com http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/bos050724.html Bruins GM Mike O'Connell will be making offers this week to unrestricted free agents Marty Lapointe, Glen Murray and Sergei Gonchar, reports the Boston Globe. Murray is the most likely to stay in Boston, says the Globe, while Lapointe and Gonchar could sign elsewhere this summer. According to the paper, the Penguins could have real interest in getting Lapointe to Pittsburgh as a little more veteran support for phenom Sidney Crosby, while the Montreal Canadiens could also to make a play for Lapointe. Gonchar has been rumored to be heading back to Washington, but he will most certainly receive offers for more than a dozen clubs this August. Murray, meanwhile, will probably entertain offers from other clubs before making a decision and the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to make a pitch for him.
