I wonder if missing the playoffs this season will spell the end of the Sather era in New York? If they miss the playoffs this season, they will have missed the playoffs 6 times in 12 seasons, and they have only made it past round 2 once...
-
I would wager that a trade for both guys, who would largely be rental players, would be expensive. I would say it would be one or the other. On their own, each player would make the Wings a better team. It would depend on cost, and whether or not Dallas is in the playoff picture. At the moment they are only 3 points out of 8th, so I doubt they would be sellers if they are in the same position in 2 weeks.

Nothing new for the Rangers... They had the same problem ten years ago (01/02-03/04 to be exact). Loads of big names/point producers in at times in those seasons: Theo Fleury, Mark Messier, Petr Nevded, Pavel Pure, Martin Rucisnky, Eric Lindros, Alexei Kovalev, Bryan Leetch, Anson Carter, Vladimir Malakhov, and Mikael Samuelsson ( ) to name a few... Even with all that talent, they never made the playoffs in any of those seasons. This led up to an absolute fire sale before the 2004 deadline, where they traded away TEN roster players and somehow were also able to add Jaromir Jagr...

Sounds like you can still exceed the cap. It's explained here: http://flyersfaithful.com/2012/06/18/cba-101-part-5-long-term-injured-reserve/ Also if you look at Capgeek, Philly is at the moment over the cap by $566k. This number is reflected in the "Projected LTIR" section on Philly's page.
-
Chris Pronger is on a 35+ contract, isn't he on LTIR in Philly?
-
That would be a good course of action. For Smid's sake, he'd be dumb not to hit the UFA market this summer. As one of the few quality Dmen available this summer, he stands to get a pretty good raise and/or could pretty much pick his new adress. The UFA market is going to once again be pretty thin on D.
-
If Bertuzzi wants to retire, I doubt they would use an amnesty buyout on him. If he's still hurting, they could just keep him on LTIR all season and still have an amnesty buyout if they need it next summer. Plus, if he is legitimately still hurt, the NHLPA won't allow the Wings to buy him out.
-
I guess what it would come down to... Would paying the price to acquire Smid to be a rental for the rest of the season make the Wings that much better? Better enough to make whatever that price is, worth it? I would hate to see Holland send a 1st rounder for Smid, then see the Wings go down in the first round again. Then, they face the realistic possibility of Smid walking and still not having a 1st rounder.
-
I'm certainly not saying that he won't move, just re-hashing what I have read. I would actually hope Holland WOULDN'T dump a first rounder for Smid... I think part of the reason he sent one for Quincey, was because Quincey was slated to become an RFA and the Wings could get atleast another year out of him. Smid is scheduled to become a UFA, and there is no guarantee that he would want to re-sign with the Wings either...
-
x2. I find it ironic that DetroitRedWings1993 wants so badly to dump Franzen but is all for acquiring Stafford, a player who is struggling mightily and has well documented issues with consistency ON TOP OF having a larger cap hit than Franzen. Funny stuff.
-
From all accounts, it sounds like Edmonton really wants to re-sign the guy and isn't high on trading him. This means the price will likely be high if another team is dead set on getting him. They'll move Whitney, or (depending on their health) Fistric/Sutton before they move Smid.

I was angry that I missed this interview. I watched the game, but it was at the bar and they were blasting music instead of the game. One of the TV's had subtitles on, but it was too far away for me to read it. I would've walked over to see what it said, but I was on purse watching duty while my G/F and her friends were dancing... I agree with the above statement. Making no moves at the deadline would probably benefit this team. It's looking like there isn't going to be very many sellers, which means that prices are going to go up, and bidding wars are going to happen. I'd rather Holland hang onto the Wings depth and young players. Plus, depending on where the Wings finish, they could have decent footing in the first round of what they are saying will be a deep draft. I did make out part of the interview where Holland said that Samuelssons size will help against the East. This I can also disagree with. While Samuelsson has good size, his liberal use of this size will not help against the bigger and more physical teams in the East.

I find it funny that people get butt-hurt over Brunner (who has been struggling) getting moved to the third line, but if were a struggling Franzen getting moved down everyone would be calling for Babcock to win the Jack Adams. Did I see someone say that Mickey Redmond was "talking sh*t" about Brunner not scoring? Sounded more to me like he was pointing out why he was struggling and some changes he could make... I mean gee, a guy who has one 40+ and two 50+ goal seasons under his belt and has been watching hockey games for a living for 30+ years probably doesn't know anything about scoring goals... I also thought it was funny when Redmond said that Datsyuk likes playing with Abdelkader. I can't imagine how that must've stung for people who've been saying that Datsyuk has been comtemplating his future due to playing with Cleary and Abdelkader...

I've got a trade idea... Phoenix could use a few more fans, maybe Holland can trade Blueadams to the Coyotes. Maybe for Yandle?
-
I'll bet large stacks that Perry won't be going anywhere atleast until the offseason. The Ducks are gearing up for a deep playoff run, and nothing they could get for Perry is going to help their team on that run. I highly doubt Bob Murray has even considered moving him. It's all just media fodder driven by the fact that he is a star player slated to be a UFA this summer.

And the cough medicine...
-
Cmon now, if you're going to come in here and talk trades, atleast know what you're talking about.Parise and Suter not coming here had little to do with Holland. For the 142,454,746,346,534,866,345th time. PARISE WANTED TO PLAY IN MINNESOTA AND SUTER WANTED TO PLAY WITH PARISE. Seriously... and it'll have nothing to do with Hollands chances of signing Perry... Holland didn't do "nothing" last summer. They may not all be the most popular additions, but on top of trying to add Parise and Suter, he signed 4 players. Trade Franzen? Oh, I get it. An unrealistic NHL13 dream. Try again.

We have enough slump-prone forwards on this team. No need to overpay for another one...
-
Take the poll at the bottom of this article: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/GARTH/Sabres-Set-TV-Ratings-Records/6/49278 Sounds like what a lot of people want Babcock want to do with a certain player whose name starts with a "C" and ends with a "Y"....... Who could that be?
-
What I don't understand is this: Cleary is getting dragged across the coals this season, and Stafford is pretty much Buffalo's Cleary right now. So where is the logic in bringing in ANOTHER Cleary? Do you guys have some insatiable appetite for bashing inconsistent players on here? And before you use the "He's on a bad team" excuse, realize that Buffalo is only 6 points behind the Wings and have played in 4 less home games...
-
Lol. ok, you got me... Maybe guarantee is too strong of a word. But I would be willing to bet large sums that Anaheim won't move Perry....
-
We are when he has a $4mil cap hit and the Wings have players to resign and fit under the cap for next season. And the fact that the price is going to be high (Like a decent prospect and a 1st rounder high), for a guy who's middle name could be changed to "Inconsistent". Holland could probably better utilize that $4mil a season in the UFA market, and not have to cough up any assets. Pass. /End.
-
Realistically, no one really knows if any of those players are on the market. It's all just speculation. I can guarantee Perry isn't being shopped...
