Ken Holland: Open to trade to replace Rafalski

If Campbell's contract was worse, he too would be in the minors or overseas. It's not that bad (especially nowadays with the cap at $60m+).

If you're thinking Campbell, you may as well go for Kaberle - will cost less, not lose any assets, won't help out a division rival and without a no-trade clause for similar production and crappy defense.

I think Ballard has one of those restricted NTCs...

Brian Rafalski announces retirement after 11 NHL seasons

I would think Nashville would be the route to go - Stricter budget constraints plus the opportunity for Suter as the consolation prize. LA can afford to match any offer on Doughty pretty easily, IMO.

Holland hopefully is not stupid and realizes Weber is worth may more than 4 later 1st round picks. You have to go back over ten years to find a single 1st round pick that even approaches Weber - and that is Kronwall in 2000. Not since 1983 have the Wings Drafted someone in the first round better than Weber. For instance: Would you trade Sheahan, Smith, McCollum and Kindl for Weber? Hell yes! And those were 'good' picks for the end of the first round. The Wings need to win now - they are losing Lidstrom soon and Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Franzen are all getting older, their window with this crop will be closing in a few years. Holland needs to make a big play. I don't think he will end up with a chance for Weber, but he better if given the opportunity.

    Jonathan Ericsson Appreciation Thread

Ericsson is no Fischer. The only thing Ericsson has over him is a slightly harder shot (that he can't use in-game). Fischer was better in every area and would have been a beast for us now at the age of 30 - you could just see it all starting to come together for him in his final couple years. Heck, reading reports from prospect camp, Fischer is still able to school every one of our hot shot prospects at camp.

Will Dan Markov have influence on Andre?

If Andrei starts smoking cigarettes, I bet it was that Danny again.

    Brian Rafalski appreciation thread

Lol, if Rafalski really wanted to help the Wings he would have waived his no-trade clause and let Holland trade him to some sucker GM before announcing his retirement ala Brett Hull I've been a big Rafalski fan and loved seeing him come to Detroit. Nothing but good things to say about him and still holding out hope he might have one year left in him.

Brian Rafalski announces retirement after 11 NHL seasons

For decades, players in N. America have been taught to place their dominant hand at the top of the stick (better control when playing with one hand), so the vast majority of right-handed players actually shoot left.

If Weber is unsigned I would have no qualms with the Wings sending him a front-loaded 7 year offer (near league max for the first couple years) averaging a $7.5 - $8m cap hit. The cap has gone up so much now that that is fair market value for a Norris-caliber Dman, but being front-loaded it will make it difficult to match for Nashville *and* sign Suter the next year, whom frankly deserves as much as Weber - would love to have either one on the Wings, and given the Wings situation, a little bad blood over sending an offer sheet is negligible (it's only Nashville). The draft picks would be worth losing as well (two 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd).

Canucks might try and trade Ballard in an attempt to keep both Erhoff and Bieksa.

I prefer spending to the cap - Gives the players all year to mesh and for coaches to try out lines Do not lose assets for a "rental" Trade deadline targets are so hit or miss, who knows what will be available and how high demand might be

Brad McCrimmon will not return for 2011/2012

Bieksa is awfully hit or miss - but he at least drops the gloves, and is frankly good at it. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Wings jersey. Wings have the cap to spend.

WCSF Game 7 GDT: Red Wings 2 at Sharks 3

Too little too late... Not the end of the world but frustrating as all get out. At least I can catch up on sleep now that the Wings are out. Let Hudler play a contract year - let's see what he is really capable of.

WCSF Game 7 GDT: Red Wings 2 at Sharks 3

Wings have done this to me a lot - they play a game where they look unbeatable an dominant (last Tuesday, game 4 against Sharks last year, game 5 against the Pens in 09 and against the Ducks in 07) and then immediately follow it up with a complete dud of a game. What the hell? Did they forget what they did the previous game? Do they think that was enough? Did they blow their nut? It's not over, but it is playing out exactly as I feared it would so far, after a dominating game previously where they looked unbeatable, they follow it up with a sleep walk.
