    Ericsson out One Month

Sucks Ericsson is hurt, but it might help in the long run to give Kindl, Commodore and maybe even Smith minutes heading into the stretch.
  2. Rather underwhelmed if this is all that happens - hoping to see Holland just setting up for something great. Quincey isn't bad (mainly plays on the left side for Colorado, by the way), but I would rather see the first go to a forward, as I think Kindl/Commodore/Smith/Janik was plenty of depth already on D. Makes me think/hope Holland is now wheeling a defenseman for a forward upgrade... he did get this one done pretty early. Having Ericsson and Quincey making a combined $7m next year does not thrill me.

    Lids fantasy replacement.

Edler from that list - still pissed Vancouver sniped him from us.
  4. Great post - I think a lot of people think Howe is great mainly because he played forever - but at his peak he really was head and shoulders above the rest of the league. I compared to Lemieux b/c Gretzky's dominance is simply unmatched --- Lemieux (minus Gretzky as his competition) is closer to Howe's margins.
  5. I have Howe 2nd all-time, behind only Wayne Gretzky. He has led the league in points by Lemieux-like margins, but was mean and good defensively as well. He finished top 5 in points for 20 straight years - next closest is Gretzky at 16. He also led the league in postseason points 5 times.

    What to do about goaltending

Islanders are going to lose Nabakov for nothing after this season if they do not trade him. I don't think he'll be that expensive - how many playoff teams really need a backup goaltender?

2/4 GDT : Red Wings 4 at Oilers 5 (SO)

PP has been really bad - didn't they also have a 4 min PP?

2/4 GDT : Red Wings 4 at Oilers 5 (SO)

    Bah, entertaining game at least.

A question about Red Wings history.

Very nice find - and he was a right wing. http://www.goaliesarchive.com/wings/conacher.html Happened a fair amount of time in the 20s and 30s, but not since Brannigan in '41 (for the New York Americans). Conacher played goal for a whole 9 minutes but did not give up a goal.

A question about Red Wings history.

Douglas Young once had to play goalie during the '34 season, but he was a defenseman... Is that who you are thinking about? http://www.goaliesarchive.com/wings/young.html

    Future retired numbers

There are honored wings alumni and the Red Wings Hall of Fame as well.

    When Eaves comes back...

Detroit will have too many forwards on the roster when Eaves returns. One of the bottom 6 forwards will have to be waived, traded for a low pick or bundled in a package for an upgrade. Who would you prefer goes? I doubt Helm or Abdelkader goes, but Eaves/Miller/Emmerton/Mursak all have similar qualities and are pretty easily replaceable, even within the organization. As far as value to the team, I'd rank them: Eaves Mursak Miller Emmerton Emmerton seems like the most obvious trade bait as he is young with upside but largely redundant on this team. Eaves injuries have me a little worried though.

I've seen nothing contradicting #5 going to the balcony.

    Toughening Up?

I'm crossing my fingers for Morrow or Doan by the trade deadline - perfect fit, IMO.

    Future retired numbers

Bob Gainey is an excellent comparison, and Datsyuk is better. If Datsyuk retired today I think he still gets in.

    When Eaves comes back...

Even if Eaves remains on IR for the season, one of these guys will need to be moved if Holland brings in a forward before the trade deadline... which I am hoping he does - whether it is Parise/Ruutu/Hemsky/Moen/etc.

    When Eaves comes back...

I haven't really paid attention to his status - just assumed he would be back sooner than later.

    Future retired numbers

Datsyuk is already a lock for the Hall of Fame, IMO. Zetterberg is more iffy, but there are worse forwards currently in. Osgood has a chance to go up if he ever gets inducted as well.

    Ales Hemsky and Andy Sutton

I'd be excited about Sutton - he's kind of a meaner Brad Stuart and well liked by Oilers fans. Hemsky is more of a boom or bust - it's obvious if healthy he could thrive with the Wings system, but man his injuries have really piled up. If all goes well I can see him re-signing with the Wings at a good cap hit. If something like this were to happen, it's obviously not a dream scenario - like Parise/Suter - but I would rather lose Jurco and a first to a scenario like this, that does have a lot of potential, instead of Holland sitting on his hands.

Suter not signing before Feb 27 deadline

I have to think the Wings are on Suter's radar - I have no idea though if he is the type to go for $$$ over a winning team, but he seems like the type who would accept less money from a Cup contender - which the Wings are only one of, but Detroit does have a lot to spend next year, Lidstrom or not.

    1/25 GDT : Red Wings 2 at Canadiens 7

And our token overreaction Wings record without Lidstrom is like 6-18

Not one of their better games. Hudler is a beast!! Lidstrom without a negative +\-

    Suspend him!!!!

    1/16 GDT : Sabres 0 at Red Wings 5

I dunno about that - top forward was Satan scoring about 50 pts and top defenseman Alexei Zhitnik.

    Why don't we have a "JIM-MY JIM-MY!" chant yet?!

    I always try to get a De-troit Red-Wings Goal-ie Jimm-y How-ard chant going when I'm at the Joe.
