Williams in, Abdelkader back down to GR

Lolz. Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda... CAN'T... unless you wanna waive him. I'm not sold on the guy either, but do you believe he has absolutely NO VALUE in either development or a trade?

    NOT doom and gloom

LoL. If only... I'm repeating myself from the Rumor Mill discussion on "who do you want gone, who do you want..." but Leino, Williams*, Lebda, + Meech for a scoring winger. *No hatred for the guy. I'm trying to look at the guy for what he's doing now, not what he did his last time around with the team -- He's played only 15 games and has as many points as Leino. maybe coming back from injury he'll start to light it up, but maybe he's worth more in a package for another piece of the puzzle. Who that is??? I dunno?? Who's a seller that's got a playoff rental for us? Maybe it doesn't get any better than JWill?

    Anything new on Lilja?

It is unlikely that we'll see him doing any of that when he eventually makes his return to the ice. but I can't wait for his return.
  4. I just don't see a deal happening at the deadline unless it is to clear space and in all likelihood, no one will be moved until free agency starts for playoff depth purposes. If I had my way I'd package for a scoring winger, rental purposes only: Lebda+ Meech+ Leino* Williams** + I have trust issues with these dudes. * Maybe this is kneejerk reaction. 7 points in 42 games, the inability to produce when needed. Work-ethic/entitlement issues. I don't have blind hatred for the guy and I know that he might develop, but I don't think Leino is what the Red Wings need right now. ** Again, no hatred for the guy. I try to look at the guy for what he's doing now, not what he did his last time around with the team -- He's played only 15 games and has as many points as Leino. Maybe coming back from injury he'll start to light it up, but maybe he's worth more in a package for another piece of the puzzle. Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Bertuzzi Franzen-Zetterberg-Cleary *this dude right here*-Filpulla-Miller Helm-Draper-Eaves Maltby May Abdelkader Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Ericsson-Janik Kindl / Lilja Of course, who that proven, scoring winger is for pieces like that... I have no idea.

Who do we put on the trading block?

The Wings, not that they're aiming for him anyway, would not get Kovy before Free Agency for the above mentioned reasons. Atlanta might be interested in Flip, but we'd have to give up Kronwall as well to clear enough cap space and make it worthwhile for Atlanta. ...wait, you mean Atlanta won't take just anyone for Kovy?? We heard you the first time, dude, but Rafalski is going nowhere.

What would you give up for Kovalchuk

Atlanta isn't going to take anyone that isn't of value, reasonably priced, and signed/re-signable. So, they wouldn't even look at an offer including Holmstrom (UFA) Lebda (UFA) Meech (RFA) Williams (UFA) Bertuzzi (UFA) As far as Chicago is concerned, they have to shed salary for next year no matter what and that's why Chicago would offer up Sharp, Versteeg, Sopel, Barker, etc. They would get value for their playoff run and shed salary for next year. They're not worried so much about cap room for this year. They have 8+ roster spots to fill and zero dollars to do so. They need to shed at least $3+ million for next year just to get below the current cap number. So there's no chance of Chicago resigning Kovy. Then... the Wings can sign Kovy in free-agency! EDIT: Eureka!

What would you give up for Kovalchuk

Like everyone else in the league, Atlanta doesn't want the Campbell or Huet contracts if that's what you're suggesting... but they are going to have to dump some salary, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a decent offer to get Kovy as a rental for the playoffs.

What would you give up for Kovalchuk

I like this but, that $9 million number is really hard to swallow. If it were more like $7-8 million, I'd feel better about it. A little more cap space to work with... Also hard to swallow is that Lidstrom is not on this list. I think if we lose Lidstrom we definitely need an upgrade with our 6-7 d-men in Meech and Lebda. (Janik rates higher than either) These two do not need to/should not be resigned... and that's where the smaller cap number for Kovy would work nicely. Also, if there is no re-signing of Holmstrom, I do not think there needs to be a re-signing of Maltby. All in all, going after Kovy as a free agent is the only way I can see the Wings getting him. (...and I really don't think it's gonna happen) As we do not have the luxury of cap space like we did for the Hossa signing, I cannot fathom Holland giving up home-grown, system developed talent to go after a star forward that won't immediately fit in our system. Sure, Kovy's offense would certainly help in shoring up a playoff spot and in the playoffs themselves, but that's a moot point when factoring in the price the Wings would pay in depth to get him. On top of that, while it seems silly at this point, Atlanta seems to think that there will be no extension negotiations to possible rental suitors. That's a deal-breaker... EDIT: Clarity.

    Holland going to re-sign Holmstrom?

Let's make it easy on everyone and just start calling him Tom, you know, the shortened version of Tomas. ...of course that's pronounced like TOME (a large scholarly book) Pronunciation: \ˈtÅm\ not Tom - a common name. Pronunciation: \ˈtäm\ ON TOPIC: While he is having a quality year and is *fingers-crossed* staying healthy, with age and durability issues I do not think he is worth more than a 1 year - $1.25 Million. Tops.

Cap space isn't so much the problem... it's the roster limitations that will be the problem.
