Just curious, how did Craig Simpson come into the broadcast booth tonight for the Wings? Other than the fact that Mick/Murph aren't there tonight? Dunno, but I don't mind... he's at least intelligent and pretty insightful when it comes to the opposition..

    Mccarty "Another fight"

By no means an impressive fight, it was better than the last couple outings for McCarty. As mentioned, a couple nice shots in early. You could tell that he didn't want it to last as long as it did, as it went from grappling match to hugfest on McCarty's end. Clarkson was able to land his only good shots of the fight near the end, when Mac was clearly spent... but at least Mac didn't stop swinging.

    Stars sign Mark Parrish

Just an observation, and probably a silly one at that... ...but watching the game last night, i noticed that Parrish constantly spits when he's on the bench having just come off the ice. and it's not like he's bringing up goobers or anything... the way that he scrunches up his face, it always looks like he's trying to get something off of his tongue... like he has food in his mouth that he's trying to spit out. sorta gross and oddly disturbing for some reason. i dunno... just something i noticed.

Sundin to meet with Ducks' GM Burke

^^^^ For all of those reasons... and more... I am so glad we did not land Sundin.

Shanahan tired of waiting on Rangers

    >Leafs Wouldn't he want to play for someone who has, at least, the chance of making the playoffs? I mean, he's ruling out the Preds... who have a chance... *snicker*

Sundin to meet with Ducks' GM Burke

Sure. Meet with Burke, who will tell him to resign with Toronto. ...cuz that's where Burke will be next year. I don't think Anaheim has the cap space for Sundin???

The Bertuzzi - Matthias (+ picks) trade

So I'll admit that there was a little snottiness in the tone of my delivery of my post about Matthias being shipped down... he certainly can and has the time to develop into a skilled player... so my apologies to him. My overall thought on this subject is that in order for the Wings to put the best team on the ice, from time to time we are going to have to take chances on players that may not work. We also may have to give up prospects to make those chances happen. Yes, Bert was a bust in the eyes of the us the fans and obviously to Ken Holland ...and sure, Matthias might end up being the second coming of Christ. (um, right...) I acknowledge that it stings to lose that prospect. Lets be realistic though, the Wings are not hurting because we gave up one decent (possibly amazing) prospect. Ken Holland is not second guessing himself as a GM because of this move. If Matthias was your favorite prospect of all time, well... it sucks your guy is gone. It also sucks when other teams get to reap the benefits of your elite scouting, or the error of a chance taken. It's how team, trades, and the league works.

The Bertuzzi - Matthias (+ picks) trade

For everyone still worried about how we gave away a great prospect in Matthias... he was sent down to the minors by FLA yesterday.

    Best offseason for Wings Ever?

    Burke... who?

    Leino

Quincey can't be sent back down to GR without passing through waivers, so his value is probably higher in trade than as a Wing. Hartigan can go back to GR. So he can be traded now or later... if he's worth anything to anyone...

Anyone worried about game 3 at all?

Worried? No. Is the series over? No. It goes at least two more games. Do the Wings look solid? Yes. Do the Pens have a chance? Sure. Am I confident that the Wings are Stanley Cup Champions this year? Yes.

scuffle at the end of the game

Gotta be honest. ...and I've watched this video several times... both CBC and Versus feeds. It looks as if Datsyuk goes after Roberts to pull him off the scrum . Roberts complies with the first blow. Datsyuk replies with a couple of his own. Not saying it's any sort of KO blow or anything. ...but for Datsyuk to stand up. Kudos in my book.

    The 2008 Trade Deadline Thread

The Foote deal is for a first round pick... if the Avs make the playoffs it's a 2008 1st. If they don't make the playoffs it's a 2009 1st round pick. If Foote resigns with the Avs the CBJs get another pick?? EDIT: for correction/clarity

Is Another Lockout Coming / Possible ?

"The bottom line is both sides lack the stomach for another costly labor war, one that could not only cause further damage to their visibility problem in American sports market but also could cut into a fan base whose tolerance could be taxed too much by another lockout. Issues exist, some potentially contentious, but ultimately the spirit of conciliation, the willingness to negotiate, the desire to keep the league going and the unwillingness to face another labor war should win out. Another lockout is possible, but unlikely." This is a well written and well thought out article. Unnecessary speculation? Maybe? The league is still taking a lot of criticism with limited television deals, changes in rules, scheduling, player conduct etc. This criticism comes in regular blasts of varying intensity from die-hard fans, casual fans, and non-fans. The last thing it needs in the next few years is another labor squabble. I know there's a lot varying opinion as to how far Bettman has his head up his ass. ...but I think after the hit the league took the last time there was a lockout... it can't possibly be completely buried in there anymore. "Seeming" team parity, as well as strengthening and building the popularity of the game is truly the only way a another lockout can be avoided. Not like this hasn't been done before... but break out your list of "how-to's"

    NHL Cap numbers per Team

An article from today's New York Post on the NYR salary cap challenges, and this doesn't even mention Hossa: By LARRY BROOKS July 8, 2007 -- In a best-case scenario, the Rangers would not have chosen to engage in a one-year salary arbitration case with Henrik Lundqvist. But in the context of the NHL's $50.3 million hard salary cap under which the Blueshirts have approximately $9 million to sign the goaltender, Brendan Shanahan and Sean Avery - then actually operate next season - the team has little choice. Even if it will ultimately cost considerably more to sign Lundqvist to a long-term deal in order to prevent the franchise goaltender from hitting the 2009 open market, the Rangers simply cannot now absorb the $5-5.25 million that would lock him up. Under arbitration, the two-year pro is likely to receive between $2.2-$2.5 million, with comparables Ryan Miller (a conference finalist each of his first two seasons) and Cam Ward (a Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe winner in the first of his two seasons) both earning $2.667 million per. That sum would buy time for the Rangers, who could begin negotiations with No. 30 on a long-term extension any time after Jan. 1 without absorbing an additional 2007-08 cap hit. It also would buy time for Glen Sather to make roster moves. First-pair defenseman Marek Malik, who has one year at $2.5 million remaining, isn't likely to be dumped, even to make room for free agent Sheldon Souray. But if Marc Staal has a good enough camp, Sather probably will shop third-pair defenseman Paul Mara, who has one year at $3 million remaining. Further, if the Rangers are wildly impressed in September by Artem Anisimov or Brandon Dubinsky, Sather could test the market on third-line center Matt Cullen, who has three years to go at $2.85 million per.

    players off everyone's radars

Good Lord.... You just might be on to something there!!!! Although, if the Wings were to sign him or Asham, it'd give me even fewer reasons to go watch the Islanders. 'specially seeing how Blake is already gone.
