Here's what I don't understand: every season players are paying a certain part of their salary into an escrow fund. This money is to be given back to owners, in case the combined salaries of all players exceed 56% of the total NHL revenue. So if the revenue go down in 2010, the players' salaries will be reduced proportionately. But will the new lower salaries count against the salary cap number, or will the original salaries count? If a player was supposed to make $8. mil before the escrow, and ends up with $7 mil. cash on hand after escrow money is given back, will his cap number go to $7 mil. or still be counted at $8 mil.? I was at the game tonight, and I believe that Zetterberg is playing through considerable pain. He looked stiff, missed passes because he seemed to overcompensate, had trouble getting up after falling to the ice. In short, his back must be really bothering him. It may be a good idea to rest him for a couple of weeks, it's not like we really need points or there's nobody to replace him temporarily. Or maybe even do medical intervention, if he can be back for the play-offs.

"There are none so deaf as those who would not hear." Try to think in context of the question and the answer given, compare it to the answers to the same question that EVERY other ASG player gave. Crosby should have said something like: " I respect their decision, Pavel and Nick have been great representatives of the NHL in the past and it is unfortunate that they couldn't attend." That's the classy way to say it. Instead he said that he supports the rule, and given that he is in the same situation as Pavel and Nick, he implicitly states that "I'm here and so I'm a nice guy, and they are not, so they are selfish." Not classy at all. And, I don't think that I'm reading beteen the lines too much.

Not to be cynical, but the reaction of Datsyuk and Lidstrom to the news of their 1 game suspension was probably a mix of slight embarassment and a lot of joy for an extra vacation day. If one has to work almost 9 months of 7-day weeks with very few days off, each extra day is worth a lot. And especially so for older players. I applaud Holland for standing up for his guys and refusing to, in effect, order them to attend the media events at the ASG, so they can get some extra rest. I dislike Crosby for critisizing Datyuk and Lidstrom. It would have been way classier to skip the topic altoghether. It was, however nice of him to come to Montreal even though he can't play. I doubt that a threat of 1-game suspension with pay was what made him do it. Bettman wanted to improve player participation in the ASG and his rule backfired. No cospiracy here. I think that this controversy mainly exists for the media and the fans, while the players and the commissioner will have forgotten all about it in a month.

Or, applying a different spin, 10 Eastern and 11 Western teams are above .500 which will likely change tonight. The West is ahead in combined head to head record, but not badly: 77W-43L-15OTL for 73% of possible points to the Eastern record of 58W-61L-16OTL for 66%; and SJ and MN account for 15 of the 19 wins' differential. (Not that MN can repeat that performance with their current form. ) So a more correct statement would be that the conferences are about even, but SJ and MN happened to dominate the Eastern opponents they faced.

I wouldn't want to travel to it if it were an ASG. Let it run its course some more, there are still Detroit, MN, Boston, Colorado, all 6 Canadian teams and maybe Columbus (sisnce I live here ) that could conceivably hold an outdoor game. That's enough to run through year 2021. By then, they might invent warm-weather ice or something.

If the next Zetterberg's contract contains a written guarantee, that he will never be taken off Datsyuk's line, I do believe he would sign for under $6 mil.
