Bettman has been a comissioner for 15 years now. If the owners were "duped" into anything, they would have to be an exceptionally stupid bunch not to have caught on by now. I prefer the simpler and more believable explanation: the owners LIKE what Bettman is doing. And if the league was not growing the way they wanted in the traditional markets, and if they didn't expand to other markets, how do you grow the game then? Anyway, this topic has been fought over and over again on this board, and if you want to find good arguments against (and for) your opinion, use the search engine. Search for "relocation", "expansion", "moving" etc. and you are sure to find such discussion.
-
Who'd you think approved the "Bettman's" plan to go with more money from VS vs less money with ESPN?? The NHL board of governors that has the power to appoint and fire the commisioner, and to overturn any of his decisions, consist of OWNERS. They WANTED more money, if at the expense of less TV exposure. They also approve all rule changes, schedules, teams relocating etc. If you want someone to blame, at least blame the right guys!

Good toget a win. However it came.

Why was he saying that? The ##5-8 teams in the Westare all with in 1 point of each other (as of 7pm today) there's no way to pick a matchup.

Detroit Red Wings 2007-08 Stanley Cup Champions * I dunno, looks good to me.

From the shift chart it looks like Simon was assessed 5+10 min. and the game misconduct. Hilbert, who sat for Simon, only sat in the box for 5 min. But the box score doesn't have 5 min. Strange.
-
Sorry, but there will be many GMs willing to pay Datsyuk way over 5 mil. Even if he scores 0pts in this year's playoffs. To think otherwise is to delude oneself.

My hatred of Dino may stem from the fact, that when I saw him first in the 1980s, he was being his usual dirty bastard self for Team Canada(edit) in the WHC or for his NHL teams vs the Russian teams that I rooted for. Same reason I hate Bobby Clarke.

I have a better idea. How about he gets Jack Nicholson as his anger management coach (like in that movie)

Does the "Hollweg had it coming" remark mean that Simon was right to do what he did? Or did Hollweg had a fight coming, but not an assault with a deadly weapon?
-
That's because I was answering a post about criminal and civil penalties. And there it matters, how much damage one's actions caused. And I agree with that. On the other hand, making someone miss a few games (as in childeren games) because of something bad they did, is not a very seriuos matter. It is important to the guys involved, but not to me. So when I said that my emotional response was to ban Simon for a year, I meant it was my emotional opinion. So a "Why?" question is not really appropriate here. If I said that "after careful cosideration, and having familiarized myself with all the applicable facts, rules, and precedents, I think that Simon should be suspended for 27.5 games", then a why? question would be begging to be asked. But I don't have time or desire to delve into this matter any deeper than: He is a thug and an idiot, he should be punished appropriately and severely. Thank god, Hollweg is OK (as far as I know).
-
Sigh, I thought I answered this already. I don't have a reasoned opinion on the penalties NHL should levy for the dirty hits like this. My fan's emotional opinion is ban him for a year, to deter others. But I'm sure there's more that should go into consideration in determining the punishment. CBA, precedent, disciplinary record of the player and the like. I don't know what the rational reaction should be. My problem with Bertuzzi lies outside hockey entirely. Because of the severe consequences of his on ice actions, his case goes into legal and moral realm outside hockey. What penalties NHL levied or not levied is not important in that realm.

So, in US culture, if you did something wrong and damaged someone, the way to feel remorse is to do nothing about it and try to use the courts and lawyers to escape with paying as little as possible? I must look up "remorse" in the dictionary again, because I could swear it meant something different. What does "care about yourself only and screw other people" means then?
-
When you injured someone, you can't magically heal them, so you can only make up for your actions monetarily. I never said that Bert should have paid 19 mil. or any other number. I said that he should have directed his lawyers to be more flexible and expedite the settlement. Even if that meant paying more in damages, than the absolute minimum they are aiming for. I don't know what the final number will be, but for the sake of argument lets assume that after all legal tricks are exausted in another 5 years, Bertuzzi is sentenced to pay say $3mil. If his lawyers were more flexible from the beginning, lets say he would have to pay $5 mil. in 2006 or so. That's what I am talking about. That's what i'd expect an honorable man to do to atone for his crime. Because simply saying "I am sorry" and not doing anything to help the victim of your crime does not indicate remorse to me. Ask yourself this question: If Bertuzzi is really remorsful, and his legal strategy is that of a remorsful man, what could he have done differently, if he were only faking remorse to get off with minimum punishment and money damages? If your answer is nothing different, then why do you believe in his remorse and don't believe in Moore's injuries? Simply because Bertuzzi is a better hockey player?
-
May be it is my Russian heritage, but I'd take an honorable fool over a smart weasel every time. I marvel when people say, that Moore must be exaggerating his injuries, based solely on the fact that it could bring him more money in the civil suit, when there's no evudence that Moore's injuries are not as seriuous as he says. At the same time, when Bertuzzi shows public remorse, nobody questions the sincerity of that, based on the fact that it is in Bertuzzi interest to show his remorse publicly, to get lesser criminal penalty and to generate some goodwill among the potential jury pool for the upcoming civil case. Why is that?

i think Moore is sueing Bertuzzi and some other persons, as well as the Canucks organization. That's what they have liability insurance for. Remember when a girl died in Columbus, after being hit with an errant puck? From the insurance liability standpoint, it is a similar case. A company's empolyee did damage to someone in the course of doing his job. If he should be held personally liable also, is for the courts to decide.
-
a) Bertuzzi has no moral right to questionthe severity of Moore's injuries. His lawyers have such legal right. b) Bertuzzi (if he really was remorseful) should have directed his lawyers to settle the case as soon and as painlessly for Moore as possible, even if he would have to overpay some. c) Until the case is settled one way or the other, Bertuzzi has not yet atoned for his actions, and since he seems in no hurry to do so, I'll keep thinking of him as an unrepentant criminal. As such, I can not cheer for him if he scores a goal or makes a great play in the Wings uniform. d) The rest is betwen Bertuzzi's conscience and his God.

To be clear, I could care less how many games Bertuzzi was suspended for. 10 or 30, it matters very little. I despise Bertuzzi for his behavior in the matter of damages due to Moore. From what little I know about Yzerman character, I absolutely refuse to believe that if he were in Bertuzzi's shoes, he would not meet Moore in any court of Moore's choice, and try to make all amends that he reasonably could as soon as he could, instead of dragging his feet for 3 years. As to what penalties or suspensions the league should levy for the hits to the head, take it up with Colin Campbell, I don't have a reasoned opinion on that subject. Bertuzzi's lawyers disputed the jurisdiction in both Denver and Ontario courts. They know perfectly well that hearing in Vancouver is the most beneficial to their client. If they stipulated to courts jurisdiction, or offered to go to suitable for both parties arbitration, the case could have been settled by now. But the lawyers job is to act in the best interest of their client. It is for the client (Bertuzzi) to direct his lawyers to take steps to expedite the case, even if that is not exactly the best legal move. A remorseful honorable man would do that. Bertuzzi has not.

If you read the Wingsfan31's post that I was replying to, you'll see that I was talking about Bertuzzi's behavior Re: Moore's civil suit. You were the one who brought the suspension and other players' acts into the conversation. As to what I based my opinion of Bertuzzi's remorse on, re-read my post where I talk about how Bertuzzi has his lawyers block Moore's attempts to file the civil suit in various courts, and take into account the fact that it's been 3 years, and Moore still hasn't seen a dime from "repentant" Bertuzzi. Again, that doesn't spell "remorse" to me. EDIT-typos
-
Which part of my post are you replying to? I said nothing about how Bertuzzi felt about hos suspension, or that I had a grudge against Bertuzzi, because of what the NHL decided. If you quote my posts, please read them first, and quit putting someone else's words in my mouth.

No, I am not a fan of Cicarelli and I always hated his guts. As I said, fair or not, the damage one causes by his illegal act determines the punishment. And should (IMO). I said that IMO (in my opinion) Bertuzzi's subsequent behavior indicated to me that his remorse is not deep enough to actually do anything about it, other than cry. If I cripple someone, and deprive them of their ability to pursue their career, and then do my damnedest to avoid paying a dime in compensation, am I really repentant? I don't think so. If Bertuzzi doesn't think that 19 mil. is fair, go to arbitration, determine what's fair, and pay slightly more, because you are sorry you did it! Not have your lawyers block all Moore's attempts to file the suit in two countruies. That is NOT the behavior of a repentant man.
-
Pray tell, where did I say that other players should go scott-free for blatant illegal acts? All I did say was that Bertuzzi's act had the most serious consequences, therefore Bertuzzi got the most public scorn. The NHL disciplinary treatment of his offence, BTW, was not out of line with other such offenses. EDIT-missed spaces.
