    2017 NHLTrade Deadline Discussion

We are playing Vanek tomorrow??????? So dumb.

    2017 NHLTrade Deadline Discussion

Given Holland's lack of propensity to make trades, I highly doubt he'll be doing anything exciting here. Vanek getting moved would be miracle enough. Edit: I'm definitely exaggerating slightly but really hoping at least Smith and Vanek get moved.

    Atanas Ilitch???

    Let's hope
  4. greenrebellion

    Well there's this..............

This is Holland we are talking about, if he moves Miller for a bag of pucks it will be big news.

    Well there's this..............

Holland better make a move. If we hold on to Vanek, I will be livid.

    2017 NHLTrade Deadline Discussion

Anyone else depressed when looking out to the 2020/2021 season and realizing that between Zetterberg, Nielsen, Helm, Abdelkader and Weiss we have over $20MM tied up in salary for players, that will either not be in the NHL or at best be third/fourth line players at best.

    Push For The Playoffs

Actually, I'm not pissed :). I'm the one that wrote the big thank you thread a month or two back. I am very appreciative for what this team has provided over the years. In any event, maybe its hyperbole. But you also can't say that there is literally no choice that we get Sydney Crosby in a trade this year, because theoretically it could happen. But you don't see all kinds of comments and all kinds of new threads talking about the Wings trading for Crosby. Why? Because we don't focus on the highly unrealistic stuff in life. So maybe I am being ever so slightly too literal, but this board is talking about the playoffs for the last 6 weeks like it is actually still an ongoing realistic possibility. It's not.

    Push For The Playoffs

Not silly, this roster literally has a zero % chance of making the playoffs. Never going to happen. An 8-2 run wouldn't even get you back into it. You'd still likely be 3/4 points out of it. And this team is not capable of an 8-2 run. Let alone multiple 8-2 runs which would be required to actually get in. Its this magical thinking that a miracle might occur that will make Holland stand pat at the deadline which would be an abysmal move.

    Push For The Playoffs

Cracks me up that people still think this team has a shot at the playoffs. As I've been saying since late December, NO CHANCE this team makes the playoffs. Roster simply not good enough. I'm still watching the games these days as I enjoy watching young players develop, hopefully we sell off some players, get a decent first overall draft spot, and can look forward to brighter days ahead.

    Howard hurt.....again

Howard was not a valuable trade asset 3 months ago.

    Simple math

Babcock loved guys like Glendening too

    2017 NHLTrade Deadline Discussion

This is Holland we are talking about. There is a chance that Vanek is moved but that is about it. Don't get your hopes to high about seeing him make a bunch of moves.

    Jeff Blashill

Its amazing what Babcock was able to get out of the club. I remember a couple years back when something like 30% of the starting lineup was injured and our lineup looked like the AHL Griffins and we still managed to make the playoffs that season.

    Jeff Blashill

I wouldn't mind Blashill being around for the next few seasons to help develop the youth (assuming we go full on rebuild)...and then we can see where we are at and determine if Blashill is the right guy or not as our roster approaches a more competitive position. I mean he was good at developing players in Grand Rapids, do we agree on that at a minimum? Seeing as we aren't making the playoffs this year (or likely for the next 2 or 3 seasons at a minimum), why not keep giving Blashill a chance and letting him work with an increasingly younger roster?

    Jeff Blashill

You guys really think that if you hire (insert coach of your choice) that this roster is a strong playoff contender...Or a playoff contender at all? I worry about your talent evaluation skills in that case. This team has no first line and no top D pairing!

    Jeff Blashill

Going from the best coach in history (Babcock) to Blashill has made it tough for people to view Blashill objectively. Let's say that Blashill is average or a decent coach...There is still going to be a performance decline coming from Babcock.
  17. greenrebellion

    Jeff Blashill

Blashill is not the problem. A talentless roster is the culprit. No top C, No top two D...And a roster of predominantly third and fourth liners. But scapegoating the coach is easy so carry on I guess.

    The team next year

Even ignoring ntc's...Abdelkader, Ericsson, and to some extent Helm all have difficult to move contracts. That indeed is this teams biggest challenge for the future... heavily weighed down by dead weight contracts. Abdelkader is on pace for 28 points over 82 games. UGLY

    Columbus Blue Jackets

Right, but parity being much greater today would be an offsetting factor.

    A Big Thanks!

As reality begins to set in across Red Wing land that this season is most likely the end of the playoff streak (barring an unlikely miraculous turnaround). I just want to say thanks to what the Red Wings have personally provided me over the past 20+ years. My earliest memories of watching the Wings are from 23 years ago watching the 1993 / 1994 season with my Dad. That of course was the year the Wings lost in in the first round in seven games to the San Jose Sharks. As a 9 year old boy, my feeble mind could simply not understand how a first seed could lose to the lowly Sharks. That was followed by a devastating lost to the Devils in the Stanley Cup Finals which was equally devastating for me. But good things were soon to follow and that has led to a lifelong passion of all things Red Wings. I want to personally thank the following: Illitch's - thanks for being great hockey owners and supporting the team throughout the years Holland - While I think its time to move on, Its incredible the success you were able to bring this organization since 1997 including 3 cups (2 if you don't give him any credit for the '98 win). Classy players who were World Class - Yzerman, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Zetterberg...thanks for all the sacrifices you made over the years and for being such classy players who always gave it their all. Joe Louis Arena - A great Arena with many personal memories. You will be missed. Babcock - I think he is one of the greatest coaches of all time and is a big reason why the Wings stayed as perennially contenders well into the cap era. Mickey Redmond - Since I was 9 years old, I've listened to Mickey night in and night out. Please never retire! Four Cups - Four cups in 23 years of watching in a league of 30 teams and increasing parity in the later years...incredible stuff! The road ahead may be tough for a while, but I'll stick by these Wings. I believe that brighter days will once again return to this iconic original six franchise. It may take longer than we all would like, but I recognize how spoiled I have been as a Wings fan and am truly lucky to have identified with them for as long as I have. THANK YOU!!!

Does this week define this team's chances?

Its over guys, prepare yourself for a long season. This roster is simply not anywhere close to being a playoff team.

    A Big Thanks!

Hey look, if we make the playoffs, then fantastic. But this is the first time in the entirety of my Red Wing watching career that I don't have any confidence that they will make it. And as I've posted elsewhere, I think keeping the streak going has in many ways hurt management's desire or ability to make necessary changes in the name of keeping the streak alive...so if they do end up missing the playoffs (as I suspect they will), it may end up being a long run positive.
