Any word on who's replacing Homer?

Phaneuf's hit on Kopitar last night

That hit was cleaner than some that get let go- that is to say the penalties and possible suspension are based off the result and not the act. That said it goes back to the whole 'gentlemanly play' idea that Redmond's always going on about (Phaneuf could've laid up a little and made the play), which is disappearing from the game. So if you can't count on that, and you can't, no-touch icing is probably the way to go unfortunately (imo).

    The Chris Osgood discussion thread

I agree, we've seen this before. And if Ozzy didn't play in the playoffs, the team would've been better off with him. This year may be an exception provided Howard continues to play like this. The guy seems like a goaltender on a mission. Ozzy, for better or worse needs to realize at 37 it's time to play the role of pappa bear a little. That said, I had a dream last night he was traded to a cup contender. Then I get up have some coffee and read this. wow..

    Russia not playing by rules?

Sounds like, once again, the NHL brass is trying to throw it's weight around in the international hockey community where they're opinions are duely noted but thankfully, they don't make da rules. The IIHF and the Olympic committee have the last say, and the NHL's leadership can go Gary Bettman themselves.

    Mathieu Schneider on waivers

In fairness to cats, I give old, slow, injury-prone Schneider the do-not-want cat: He's not the same as ppl have said, and for that matter don't you remember how awful he was in his own zone? Rafalski was an upgrade at the time. That and the penalties, in his own zone.

    Howard deserved a better fate

Just thought of this- the OT/SO kind of robs goalies of well earned (would've been) shutouts. I really think any goalie in his situation deserved a better fate. Been a long time since we've had a Wing's team that can't score.

Leino is lazy and he sucks

Yes, Leino needs to spend a month on Aaron Downey's farm. So sick of watching the guy get his obvious lack of size and strength exploited by defenders. Also it wouldn't hurt if he did some of Draper's lower body workouts.

    Samuelsson blasts Sweden

Whoa that bridge burned like yesterday's paper soaked in gasoline! There's got to be more here than meets the eye. My $.02 says he's at odds with someone who has some say-so in Sweden. It happens, and if it was me and that was the case I would've wanted to tell them to have relations with themselves too. And just might have, especially right after a game.

12/26 GDT: Blue Jackets 1 at Todd Bertuzzi 2

Only thing I wonder about with guys coming back from injury is how long it takes them to get back into game shape- I'm not trying to be debbie downer here, but Flip hasn't played in a while but at least he could still skate. Some of these other guys it might take a while, and it might not be all bad (not Flip tho) to send them to GR for 'conditioning' purposes. No prediction, it's bad luck from me apparently.

I Can't Believe Wings Fans Are Booing Hossa

I wouldn't boo the guy. Look at that contract he got- who in their right mind would've turned that down! That contract set him up for the rest of his playing career!

    NHL.com's All Decade team

How 'our own Hall of Famer Larry Murphy' describes Lidstrom is about spot-on. Admittedly, it wasn't until post lockout that I figured out for myself why Lidstrom is so good, before then it was just a matter of good things seemed to happen when #5 was on the ice. Very subtle, and it definitely plays into his game. Nice that Osgood got some respect. The guy pisses me off sometimes (monday), but he is still one of the good goaltenders of his era who's skill is in the shadow of guys like Brodeur, Roy and Hasek who are the stuff of goaltending legend.

12/23 GDT: Blackhawks 3 at Red Wings 0

Should have an easier go at it this game, we'll see, but I'd be happy if they don't end up giving Huet another "S" word. Also, only one 'shouldda had it' goal is allowed to go in tonight. I can live with that. Irregardless I predict wings 3-2 in OT. *knocks on wood*

    Jimmy Howard watch thread

This thread is a hoot! Thanx everybody for making my day brighter already! Goes to prove, anything short of a superstar isn't good enough. Really, he looks as good or better than the team's veteran goalie (so far) and heck, all he's done is win games so far this season despite being a rookie goalie and the depleted team in front of him. In today's league with the cap and all, it's better to hold onto who you know than to get rid of them thinking that the next guy might be better. That's an easy road to revolving-door like chaos that hasn't been the mode of operation in Detroit for years and isn't going to change now. As for his faults, until they start losing game after game because of him, he's going to be there and given a shot. Just like any other young NHL goalie. Personally, I think this organization's been long overdue for a young capable goalie that was drafted and developed within the organization. I wish him all the best.

Swedish Ref Performs CPR on Player

Wasn't a bad skill to have at the time being. Wonder if there's any other refs that have any formal medical training? Good to see that they were capable of dealing with such an injury effectively, referee or not.

    Aaron Ward on waivers

Ward has the skillset to be a good defensive defenseman, whether or not he executes that is the question. He's just one part of a larger piece that hasn't performed well this season at all. Wonder what they think of Maurice now... How close would the team be (salary cap wise) if they waived Lebda, Meech or both? Is he worth it? Maybe over Lebda imo. edited for clarity

    Why do People Expect Miracles?

Epic OP Aussie_Wing! I think DRW management has Leino's problem exactly figured out- he needs to work on his skating and he needs a confidence boost. I'd wager he's working with a personal trainer on his skating right now in a very similar fashion to what Osgood did with the goaltending coach last year. Skilled guidance and positive criticism applied to your faults is always a confidence boost.

Dani Markov: I Just Don't Get it

I had heard he wanted too much cash as well. I briefly tried to verify this w/Google but... The other thing that never seems to be brought up when it comes to Russian players is that when they go to play in Russia, they're going HOME. As opposed to here, that is far away from HOME and not everyone here necessarily thinks Russians are all that great, and they know that. How many of us North Americans would rather play in Russia for comparable/less money? Not me.

    Fetisov to play in KHL

What I gathered from the article they just needed an injury fill in, idk if he's going to be playing even the rest of the season. Good for him tho, kind of a testament to what caliber of athlete he was to begin with if he can do this at 51.

NHL Officials named to work Olympics

First thing that comes to my mind is that how well do these NHL referees know the IIHF rules that this tournament is supposed to be played to? Don't get me wrong if they want to play NHL rules so be it, but say so up front don't just unofficially do it. Hopefully these guys do a good job (fair, unbiased) or this is going to end up just another black eye on the face of the NHL, imo.

    Playoff Chances

I almost posted in here yesterday, and I was just looking at the same numbers on TSN, that did not change my opinion (that last word is key folks) on the matter. I think they have a slightly better than 50/50 chance of making the playoffs, and it depends on their play once the injured players come back and hopefully the roster is back to what they started with. And of course this is all said assuming that they are able to stay around .500 for the time being, which they can provided they don't play like they did last night too often. Either way at this point I don't mind. I am a spoiled Red Wing fan that has NEVER in the last 15 seasons seen the team not make the post season. With the injuries and worn out bodies, it could be a good thing.
