It does tend to put a damper on things when they suck their way into beating your team.

It's interesting the way that is being reported. I heard the actual interview and JP Barry did not say that Detroit is not interested, he said that out of the teams being speculated about, Detroit was no longer being considered.
-
The only problem with this article is -- is that Al Strachan is historically more of a poser and pretender and moron than Brian Burke is. It shouldn't confirm anyone's feelings about Burke. Strachan is traditionally known for speaking out of his ass and having a massive hate-on for Burke, who used to frequently and publicly expose him and prove him wrong when he was with Vancouver. Strachan would frequently say "this" is going to happen, except "this" would never happen. Taking this article and using it to back up anyone's feelings about Brian Burke is like relying on bin Laden to inform you about Judaism. As for Strachan's contention that Burke had a Stanley Cup winning team handed to him by Murray, here's a post that was originally posted by someone on the Flames board.

Superdeluxe and Octopusonice -- if either of you need any more details about Vancouver, and/or what to do there, sights you can see, etc., send me a private message and I'll be happy to help you out.

Slightly off-topic, but Mats Sundin agent, J.P. Barry, was just interviewed on a Vancouver sports talk-show a few minutes ago, and he said that Sundin is definitely not going to Detroit.
-
Well, it seems your mind is made up and there's nothing we can do about it. You drive a hard bargain Mr. Holland.

I'm with most of the posters on this thread. This is a ludicrous topic. It sounds more to me like the original poster simply hates the Penguins. I wonder if he said anything like that....

My favourite football player ever. Toughest ever. Highlight real for you young'uns. http://youtube.com/watch?v=NhNVqs07FRc

Just make a recording of yourself saying "Paul Dickov" and post it here and we'll be even.
-
Oh will this never end. Again, I stand corrected. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Dickov
-
You appear to be right. I Googled both spellings and the most reliable, (BBC) has him as Paul (although there are more Google-hits for "Pull"). Apparently, this all began with the Brits accent and pronounciation of "Paul" sounding like "Pull".

Not all NHL..... but some great ones. The last 2 actually do exist. No joke. Toby Os***ola: Soccer player (striker) for Barnet (UK). Jack Glasscock: Shortstop and second baseman for Cleveland, 1879-95. Harry Colon: Former defensive back for the Detroit Lions. Rusty Kuntz: Former outfielder for the Detriot Tigers. Dean Windass: Soccer player (forward) for Middlesbrough in the UK. Ron Tugnutt: NHL goalie (Dallas Stars). Misty Hyman: US Olympic swimmer. Gregor f***a: Slovenian basketball player who now plays for Barcelona. Pull Dickoff: Soccer player for West Ham United in the UK.

You really are just a kid, aren't you?

Kp-Wings, Graybeard, I have to add my agreement to you guys. Recently, I don't believe the Wings are a boring team to watch though. They got it all going on, with the possible exception of being a little too restrained when someone takes a cheap shot at them. In my opinion, the Wings are the best team in the NHL and are going to walk their way to another Stanley Cup and lose no more than 2 or 3 games in the remaining 2 series. As for Don Cherry, I think he's a very knowledgable hockey mind, highly entertaining, an unmitigated Canadian patriot, but at the same time I think he can be a flaming bigot. Those people here who say he's racist need to learn the difference between bigotry and racisim. To sum up, in my opinion, the Wings currently are fantastic to watch, (I'm a Vancouver fan first and foremost but I've loved the Wings since I was a kid) and while Don Cherry has a legitimate beef about the passion of Wings fans, I think the lack of support has more to do with them folding up in the playoffs in recent years than it does with the economics of the Detroit area. A couple of other factors are also in play, but I sincerely hope that the apparent recent increase in fan support carries on for many years to come.

We are discussing hockey here. You're a hockey fan. I'm a hockey fan. We are united by that common interest. YOU chose to bring up Cherry's comments about Canadian soldiers and that is something that pushes the boundaries of this section of this forum. You and I as Americans and Canadians may also be united in our war in Afghanistan, but I assure you that we as Canadians are not united with your sentiments about how Don Cherry feels about our soldiers. Drop it.

Hey hey how witty is that. You edited my post as if I really wrote that or sumthin'. Tell me, when you see yourself in the mirror do you get confused and look to see who's standing behind you?

Lol... go watch the game BM. You don't wanna be talking to me right now.

Best point made yet. Still, I think yours (and others) arguments are founded a little bit in not wanting to admit that some people have lost interest in the Red Wings. I don't know why that is, but it's something I've noticed for a couple of years now. I think the "New" NHL has something to do with it, and I also agree with some of what Don Cherry said. I will concede that your theory plays a part in it. How could it not? But I don't believe it's the only reason when you have a city as big as Detroit. You can take other NHL cities with a smaller population and fanbase than Detroit, (Minnesota?) and they're not suffering the same problems. I realize that they mot have been hit as hard economically as Detroit, but it goes to show that Detroit has a cushion (in the millions) that other cities don't have and should have more than enough fans to fill the seats. I think the problem is two-fold; the blue collar workers make less money, but would rather spend the money on other things that they deem more important. Their priorities have shifted and what they've see in the Joe has influenced that. I also think that may be changing. The Wings have been notorious for checking out of the playoffs early, but that's changed this year. With success, comes fan support. By the way, I think the Wings are going to walk through the Stars. The Stars faced 2 underperforming teams and think they're the s*** right now. They're nowhere as good as they think. The Flames and Sharks phones it in but the Wings will not. Prediction: Wings in 5.

I live in an island community where forestry is big business and a few years ago illegal American duties of 27 percent drove Canadian softwood lumber companies out of business and tore the heart of some surrounding communities. Is that "getting the impact"? Guess I'm just not getting the math or I'm not entirely convinced that Detroit isn't a major American city. It has poor sections, middle class areas, upper middle class, upper class, etc., etc... in layman's term, one helluva lotta people of varying incomes. You guys are making Detroit sound like it's in the middle of a nuclear winter and everyone still alive can barely afford to put food on their table. In a business that draws less than 20,000 people out of a population in the millions, there are other problems going on, like a lack of interest. This is a little difficult for me. I think you guys here are some of the greatest hockey fans alive, and I'm preaching my opinion to people who probably aren't part of the problem.

Dude, did you see his pink suit a couple days ago? He totally outdid himself. I didn't think that was possible. http://melroserocks.blogspot.com/2008/05/d...s-and-your.html

This discussion is about Cherry's comments and has been expanded on by others about why there are empty seats at the Joe. I'm engaging in that conversation. If you're saying it's okay for people who live here to speculate about why attendance is suffering, but someone from out of town (Cherry's from out of town too, isn't he?) cannot, then this forum is selective about who can comment about what based on geography. If you think that's right, then this forum isn't as good as i thought it was. My point has been that surely you can find a couple of thousand people out of 6 million who can afford Wings tickets. To suggest that these people don't exist in Detroit is ludicrous. Why don't you argue that instead.

QUOTE (Donaldjr2448 @ May 10, 2008 - 10:33AM) lol... after that rant, that's gotta sting.

After reading that last post, I think a possible reason that attendance is down is because quite a few Wings fans are so dumb that they keep paying for a beer with a 100 dollar bill and forget to ask for change. I'm not sure whether the ascending font size was intentional on your part or a sign of increasing dementia though.
